What's a redneck?

This morning my wife was taking the oldest to summer camp. On the way there, some primered up shitbox (read: chevy) with dual rebel flags with pitbulls on them was letting the glass packs slap his nuts, all while he was torquing down on some cigarette while he hung out the window.

My wife says, "what a redneck" with what I'm sure was her classic eye roll. So my kid asks, "what's a redneck?". Good question fruit of my looms. What is such a thing? She tried to explain it to her but probably just confused her a little (her words, not mine). So I ask you fine folks what do you think a redneck is?

I will say that being country/southern does not mean you're a redneck. At least that's my take.
 
Sit her down in front of some Jeff Foxworthy comedy shows. He explains it pretty well.
 
A person too poor to have slaves. They would have to farm themselves and would be tan(have a red neck). Nowadays i just associate it with intolerant, self-righteous assholes.

Its funny to me, as "intolerant, self-righteous asshole" is what i associate with the opposite of redneck - i.e. the rich, elitist pricks that had slaves, or in today's world the money, power, and the lack of giving a F about anybody but themselves. Doesn't matter if left, right, black, white, male, female, or any other descriptor. I'll take the good 'ol boy or gal any day and enjoy a meaningful conversation about real life, getting by in the real world, getting out into the real world, etc. over the patronizing musings of the upper class.

Personally, to avoid any confusion, I prefer cracker given my place of birth but I'll happily be called a redneck and explain the difference between us and the garbage that has ruined the term, much less the idiot libtards in my own neighborhood putting out BLM signs to declare themselves something other than the middle class whites that they are.

Even the dictionary definition is obviously written from a snob pov:

I guess I should have been more clear. A self righteous, intolerant asshole in a squatted truck with straight pipes and two rebel flags with pitbulls on them would be a time when I would call someone a redneck.

Wasn’t really targeting you with my comment, just struck by my own thoughts on what it means to lead a simpler, more friendly, helpful, etc life that isn’t wrapped up in all the bs.

Well, Crap! I mis-used the Term this evening, as I was walking downtown Mount Holly. A Jacked up, Old model, Dirty Dodge, diesel, with straight pipe [what else?] & Train Horns, Blasted the locals that were dinning at the outside section of the Steak house. I'm about 200' from them, & as they approached me, I held up my arms like, WHF? Of course they Blew me with the Train horns too. Naturally I showed my reaction, by calling them a couple names & flying the bird!:flipoff:
As I walked by the dinners, which Probably heard & saw me, I said, Diesel Rednecks got to Show Off!

1) Southern
2) Country
3) Redneck
4) Neck Ass
5) White trash

‘Tis ok. All, and I mean all, of the black folks I know agree completely. Sometimes a word just seems to fit, while yet not being constructive to the others of a particular skin color, love of train horns, diesel smoke, slinging mud, shooting stuff, or generally just trying to have fun.

Southern Gentleman was an aspiration till I realized it was just rich white folks. Now I’m happy with redneck or at least my version of it. My youngest son says “Dad, you can’t be a redneck, you’re a computer guy.” Oh yea? Hold my beer...

One definition I heard was a redneck is an Irish immigrant that gets surnburned while working on the homestead.
Another one comes from civil war or perhaps pre-civil war days when southern soldiers would wear red bandanas on their necks. Can't recall the exact reason.
Nowadays, it's a following intended for followers that all character is dictated by song lyrics and pop culture to make them feel as though they fit in because they lack the self worth to be an independent thinker.

Truly depends on how many beers have been consumed, and/or when you switch to brown liquor/shine as to what level you've reached
