Back story, 72 year old mom fell and broke her ankle. Has a brick ranch with stairs into everywhere but basement. Living done upstairs. Brick enclosed carport has a three step brick entrance. Carport has moisture issues since it wasn't done with moisture barrier on grade.
She is in excellent health other than the spill.

I want to plan ahead for later. She isn't happy about it but a ramp and landing would help.....mind you she pulls her own small camper with a F-150 4wd. Which she can't get in and out of now.

What say NC4x4?
Temporary?
Wood?
Steel?
Generic call the man aluminum?

She is picky about the look and has all sorts of issues with mold.

If you call the man, make sure it’s not Fat Tony.

ADA requirement is no more than 1" rise for 12" of run. Makes for long ramps that can get broken up with a landing (or several). Must be 36" wide. Now, if you build it yourself, you don't HAVE to be ADA compliant, but they are in place to design safe ramps that are wheelchair and walker safe. You don't want her to have to go up anything steeper than that in bad weather for sure. Build it with the future in mind - she isn't getting any younger.

Holy chit, that mother would be plum out in the drive way.

I built this one in Feb 2019 because my dad either had to use a walker, or sometimes have someone push him in a wheelchair, and he was getting worse. It covered 2 steps. I made it as long as I practically could within their garage, and it is steeper than what the ADA would recommend.
My dad passed away in May 2019, and my mom has kept the ramp ever since then. She won’t let me remove it - says it is easier for her than those few steps. So your mom may like to keep a ramp for a longer time than you’d expect.
Even tho this is steeper than ADA, my mom could push my dad up it in his wheelchair, no prob.

Your mom will have to call but North Carolina Baptist Aging Ministries will help. 877-506-2226 They will call the participating churches in your area and schedule a time with her. They're awesome.
That's a good idea. I would rather they serve folks that really need the help. So many are a lot worse off and have real need. We got several able bodied young folk and enough stubborn middle aged fellas to get it done. It may be a battle ship worthy build but it want fall apart.

This carport gets pretty damp. Any thoughts on treated vs. non. This is all brick, no stud walls or sheetrock. Non conditioned space.

My grandfather had the VA put one in. It's alum and was free, but not sure if that's an option. If moisture is an issue, I'd go treated.

I made one like above but the landing was 4feet tall. Went all the way out to garage door.

Worked great with no issues

Something like this would cut down on how far it extends from the house ....

ADA requirements were designed with the intention that a wheelchair bound person could propel themselves up and down safely without outside assistance (assuming they propel themselves on flat ground). My best friend's daughter has an electric wheelchair and you would be amazed at what it can crawl, and other times the slightest thing that causes it to slip. We went to Oak Island last year and we rented her an electric beach wheelchair. That thing was sick! Rear wheels were like super wide golf cart wheels with wide low profile tires, fronts were 360 degree pivot floatation tires. Never had a problem getting across the sand except for one time on a dune when it about high centered. Was also able to go in up to about a foot of water before we started worrying about the electronics getting splashed.

It's a shame we don't have a generous treated lumberyard owner on this forum anywhere.

You got my number buddy. Don't hesitate to use it
I still haven't decked that trailer!

I have waffled back and forth over steel vs. wood after seeing all the damp water in the carport this week. I am leaning toward wood because of the ease of construction even though I'm a metal guy.

Thoughts included a landing and a run of 16 feet. I need to overcome about 22 inches of rise.

Now I typically build like a hurricane is coming.
Thoughts included this being the place any and all appliances or related get carted in and out of the need arises.

So band the landing and use 2 x 4 lumber throughout or 2 x 6 like a staircase landing?
Also for post 2 x 4 or 4 x 4.

Ramp will be hung with joist hangers at landing with vertical supports as needed.

Plywood for a surface is also not where my mind is headed. Thinking 5/4 decking and aluminum tread plate with grippy holes.

Worst case this thing lands in the woods somewhere to launch a bicycle or motorbike off off in the long future, lol!

Too self: "Really you said that? What was you thinking? You know your gonna end up doing this solo?"🤣🙂

So I did my best carpenter imitation.

No electrodes burned....but I did manage to use a flap disk on a grinder once.

Family hasn't decided on the hand rail option yet. Gonna flag the let corner so it doesn't play tag with her truck. You can swing the driver doors open but the front passenger is a no go.
