Who is excited about Sat. the 13th?

If this state would go to a 1 buck rule you woudl see MAJOR improvement in antler size.
Not so true, I've been hunting in PA for nearly 20yrs. Up until
about 4yrs ago one buck was the rule there and alot of people held out all season long just to get a scrub buck. I think the fact that everyone and their grandma(literally) hunts up there might have alot to do with it. Now the rule is one buck with at least 3pts on one side-I believe we'll start seeing the effects of that majorly this year.

Anyone else here ever been in a stand on the opening day of gun in PA? WOW, it sounds like a war going on with all the shots echoing through the hills. I've only had to do that twice in the past 8yrs, it makes you want to wear ALOT of orange.

hunting in NC changed for the worse when the state decided to open up doe days back in the 90's, Now I am a firm believer in thining the does for a better buck population

but the state of NC should have opened up the doe days to private land only

When I was a kid, my dad and I used to hunt government land in the Pisgah National forest, we always killed nice deer, and when I say nice deer, I mean racked bucks. After the doe days opened up hunting steadily got worse and worse, and now you are hard pressed to find a single deer on those once deer filled gamelands.

Now with that said private land hunting has been great, we have leased 800 acres in the mtns of NC for about 20 years now, about 10 years ago we started managing the bucks, the first years were forks or better, now it has to have 6 points or better. We have killed some monsters after doing this. Not many people realize this but the drought of 07-08 not only affected us but also the mtn deer population was affected. We personally buried over 40 dead deer, not this summer but summer before, biologists blamed the dead deer on disease, related to the drought, It sucked to find 8, and 10 points that we had been hunting for years dead because of the drought

anyway I am rambling

i dont like guns...
never shot a gun and im 27 years old

Good thing this thread is about bow hunting then! :flipoff2:

And land/game management is great, we spend too much time and money on the deer each year on our land in Al and have rules about what you can take...but with all of the poachers, and the fact that you can go a whole season without seeing a game warden...it doesn't do a whole lot of good.

i suppose you do have a valid point..never shot a bow neither..

Well, Shot another doe this p.m!! Makes two so far, looking forward to going to Ohio this weekend for their opening day. I've shot some good bucks up there in the past few years and I'm hoping I can do it again this year.

I passed up two monster 8 pt'ers the other day. They walked past my stand at about 25 yds and I consider that just out of range for an ethical shot with my long bow. Tuesday morning 3 big does walked by me at about 14 yards. I was able to stand up off my stool and turn around but when I drew back I saw a bunch of briar bushes in the line of my shot and I thought the arrow might hit something and get knocked off course possible injuring the deer. Ill get one eventually.

Where do you go in OH? I am from the southern part (near Athens) myself. Hunting there is a lot different. I was in Delaware for a few years and the guys there go all out. Scenting up and making sure you have no offending odors to spook the deer. Back home when I was growing up you could be on the tractor heading into the woods and have chances for good size buck. Could be tokin' a cigar upwind and still have no problems.

I hunt in Jackson and Vinton counties......I believe Athens is close, but I have never been there. Yea, The deer are alot less spooked up there than they are here!! I shot a 130 class 8 point last year on my second shot with my bow!! I hit a limb on a 20 yard shot and had to knock another arrow and come full draw with the deer at 30 yards......Never even looked up to see what all the racket was!!
