Windrock trail route help

Right now my biggest issue is how rough 40 is approaching Old Fort and Black Mountain. Unless they have paved recently, it was all ground down to coaurse bumpy concrete the last time I went that way.

I don’t recall that when we went to Shane’s the other week but I’m not sure.

Watch our the Harmon Den exit (#7) on 40. It is currently closed at the bridge and all traffic is redirected to take the exit and then back on the interstate.
During high volume times it's a serious PITA

Eeewwww, yeah I would take the alternate route.

That is a debate that could use a little input, really just for discussions sake. From the Triad area, we could take 40W as a straight shot. For an extra 10 minutes we could do 52/77/81. I know that if there is a wreck or anything in the gorge on 40 you’re stuck there with no way out for many hours vs the other way we have exits and alternative routes. I realize you take the risk of a traffic jam either route. Any other input from people in our area?

I’ve done both, I prefer the northern route 52/77/81.

To me, it’s just too easy of a drive. GPS says it’s 10 mins longer, but it’s way easier. Just one bad hill towing and that’s fancy gap, which isn’t terrible if the weather is cooperating.

I agree that it’s a better ride. 81 is relatively flat(ish)

The pull on Fancy Gap ain’t bad. I’ve never towed up it, but being so curvy I would think Black Mountain is a harder pull than Fancy Gap.
The law man is on 81 pretty thick most of the time.

I think black mountain is a tougher pull than fancy gap if traffic on fancy gap is doing ok. 40 from Asheville to Knoxville is definitely worse than wytheville to Knoxville.

From leaving Raleigh at relatively same time, I’ve gotten to windrock before the guys did taking 40 lol

And while Assville may have the same stores (parts house, tires, fuel, etc.) available in an emergency, the access from 81 into Bristol (VA/TN) is much easier.

I just talked to my Dad who drives a truck and my buddy who drives for the same company. They deliver steel and run to Knoxville often, both said they much prefer to run 81 and don't run 40 unless they know of something on 81.

Several years ago my dad was caught in the gorge in a rock slide, sat there for hours and hours. Finally got thru and delivered his load, only to be caught in traffic from a wreck coming back home on 40E from someone rubber-necking! :shaking:

So...From Mocksville, would it make any sense for me to hit 77 north in statesville and go that way? I've always just taken 40

I prefer strength in numbers, so I always stop in Marion, hook up with Jason and Josh, then on to Asheville to get oldbullshit and roll the gorge.

I ain't skert

I much prefer to run together when possible!

Sounds like we are going to have quite the caravan when we roll out for AOP in March. And we all have CB radios in the tow rigs so it’s gonna be a fun ride!

It still isnt repaved
When I was pulling my new trailer through there it wanted jump into the other lanes! Especially in the slow lane. And you know how good and straight that trailer tows.

I would go 81 if it were me, I've taken that route on many trips to TN. Only hit traffic through fancy gap a couple of times but didn't take long to clear out.

Just watch your speed as soon as you get to the top of the hill, the VA DOT likes to catch people with a head of steam going down the back side.

And I'm here. So there's that too
I'm sure just a few hundred feet off one of the 1000 exits there? :D

Having lived in VA for the past year, I can say that the VA State Troopers _DO_NOT_PLAY_! They'd ticket their own grandmothers and laugh about it later!

My grandmother lived in Independence VA overlooking the New River near 58. Trooper McKenzie lived the next knoll over. His son Randy was a good friend of mine. We grew up shooting guns and riding motorcycles all over that mountain and down by the river. I ate dinner with them occasionally. Knew them most of my young life.

My grandmother died in my early 20's and I was leaving Independence to head home. I had JUST past my grandmothers road and was about to cross the bridge at the New River.

I was going 61 in a 50 when I passed Trooper Mackenzie. He u-turned and came after me o_O

He walked up, and I said "Hi Mr McKenzie" remember me?

"I'm sorry about your grandmother, please sign here"

Yeah... I ended up in traffic school for a whole Saturday in Galax to keep THAT one from going on my insurance :shaking:
