Wide angle lens doesn't do the proximity justice

Maybe the cars really aren't that close then?

Pretty much all action cameras have a wider viewing angle and a bit of "fisheye" where things in the center look larger and things on the edges look smaller or further away. So as vehicles actually pass, they look even further away than they actually are.
