Problems with Chrysler and Ram - Warranty Issue - Fan Shroud Radiator Failure

from what I've read it seems the original problem was an installation screw up at the factory where the seal ring was tucked under in some places and not seated completely correctly. It's not the design but from not being installed right on some trucks. At least that's what I seem to understand from looking at mine and reading the boards. I see a couple of these recorded on cummins forum and TDR but it doesn't seem like they are all flying apart. Hell, there are 1000's of these now since starting production in mid 2012 that are pulling alot harder than a 30' camper or buggy in a trailer that aren't failing. I would be confident as long as the repair was done right and that ring is seated correctly that this issue is behind you for good. Not sure what the sound was/is but since you heard it and all is fine it seems to suggest its not tied to the failure. Just trying to help think about it logically and hope you can enjoy the truck and not eat a big $$ hit dumping the truck because of something you've already worked through. I love mine, quite a machine. I hear folks like their old trucks because they can work on it etc etc, and I can't argue if you like it good for you, enjoy it. I've read alot of horror stories about the killer dowel pins, inj pump failures, injector problems, head bolts, 53 blocks, turbo issues, tranny stuff and the list goes on across all the years and makes. They're all machines, and these are made to work and pull and shit's gonna happen here or there. Also, in a few years these will be the 'old trucks'.

All I am going to say is this...if you are trying to compare the NMTF between a mechanical B (5.9) series and a 6.7 and suggesting they are equal...

Well you are either uniformed or intentionally lieing.

Those numbers are known and available and they dont compare.

Now what is fair is that Dodge has improved their truck quality significantly while utilizing a more problematic drivetrain so the net customer experience is probably about the same.

That reads like I am bashing the QSL7...not the case. It still more reliable than most....but the mechanical B and the ISB are touchstones for reliability.

Yeah well dodge still has the superior tow mirror design. So awesome that even Tacoma guys have to have them. And you can stack stacks on stacks with even more stacks. All the while sounding like big foot farting in a can.

The fawking Toyota guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

Dodge hasn't made a truck in years.
Next time you see a Rampart certified technician call me.

Maybe it was that same piece of road debris.....

I'm certain that's what is was and just like last time, it was no where to be found.

I'm un-informed. Please enlighten me, and also include the same info for the Powerstroke's and Duramax's if you have it. That would be good to know.

I don't think I said any of that actually although it's always possible I am intentionally lying and completely likely I am uninformed and most probable it was a sneaky lightly veiled combination of both. :flipoff2:

Nobody else caught this slandering of our brave men in uniform?

Ford is only decent diesel left, pricey but well worth it, I see more cummins tore up
Than any other diesels of any make and model, and most of the time it's catastrophic failures, not
To mention transmission are also junk. I'm not sure why anyone would want a new cummins

Really? I will not identify the tow pig i use in this discussion.
I roll with a great group of folks that for years have been pulling with all of the big 3 auto makers top notch shit. [expensive)
All have broke down at one time or another.
Please insert your "expert" opinion here>

Dodge can't even manufacture a dash that will hold up, what do expect about the rest of truck, never seen a ford with a cracked block or dash.never seen a dodge with lock out hubs, they all tear up of course ,I not a expert Just my opinion.ford is best selling truck like forever for a reason.
From the experience of someone who repairs diesel trucks on a daily basis, there's no substance in either comment. All three makes have failures in a wide range of systems and all three have experienced significant failure increases since the implementation of newer emission control systems. That I can tell, no brand has been more reliable than the next, all experiencing extended down times or expensive failures that are often times emissions related.

I have to voice my extreme disappointment and disgust with the Chrysler corporation, mainly the RAM division and it's customer service or lack there of.

On Thursday the 30th of July, approx. 9:30am, my 10 month old, 2014 Ram 3500 Dually with just barely 20K miles on it suffered a catastrophic failure. While going up Black Mtn. in the western part of NC, I hear a loud plastic snap sound from under the hood. I pull over immediately, raise the hood to steam and antifreeze spraying all over the engine compartment. After letting it cool for about a half hour, I was able to see all the damage that had been done in those brief few seconds. A piece of the rubber that ties the two fan shrouds together had come loose. The fan sucked the 2" rubber cover into it, causing the fan to make severe contact with the radiator. The fan had cut a 4" circular slice into the radiator, loosing the bulk of the antifeeze on the shoulder of the road where I sat stranded, less than half way up the Mtn.

After calming down a bit I called Ram road side assistance. The lady on the phone was very nice and made sure I was safely off the road. She arranged for a tow truck to take the dually to the nearest dealership (29 miles away), but stated they would only cover the first 20 miles of the tow and that the 24' enclosed trailer I was pulling would not be covered in the tow. She stated that I would have to call another tow service to take my trailer to the dealership. Not happy about that fact, but what could I do? The tow truck arrived and hour and a half later. We then begin to unhook the trailer, the driver asked what was in the trailer? An off road buggy he was told. Taking mercy on me, he said it can't be that heavy and once he loaded the dually on the roll back, he hooked the trailer up to the hitch on the roll back also. He then took the whole thing to the dealership in Asheville NC. I then paid my portion of the 29 mile trip, $100 dollars. No worries, the driver saved me that amount at least in another tow bill, I tipped him and he went on his way.

Once at the dealership, they said they couldn't look at the truck until the next day, they were busy and I understand that completely. Meanwhile on the phone with Ram customer service, after hours of arguing and complaining, they agreed to get me a rental truck from the Enterprise rental car across the street from the dealership. While waiting for 5+ hours at the dealership, we start looking on google to see if this type of failure has happened before. Low and behold it has and quite a few times at that. Not only that, but there was a Chrysler Star case issued, stating "The Star case is S1307000002, release date 8/12/2013 covering the improper installation of the fan shroud at the factory." This resulting in the rubber coming loose and being entangled in the fan.

A little heads up......fan shroud

2014 6.7 2500 Fan Shroud/Radiator failure - DODGE RAM FORUM - Dodge Truck Forums

2013 dead on side of road - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

Now 4pm we are just gettng back on the road to our original destination, still 3.5 hours away. Thinking everything was under control, I relaxed a bit. Friday came and went with no call from the dealership, thinking to myself, this is clearly a warranty issue, they have me covered. I didn't think much about it the rest of the weekend, again thinking this clearly was going to be a warranty issue and it will be covered.

Monday afternoon I finally get a call from the service writer, stating that they are refusing to warranty the truck. They claim the damage was done by an outside force such as road debris. I am a mechanic by trade, have been for over 20 years, I own my own automotive service shop, I know what happened first hand and I'm not buying this cop out. Understandably angered by this, I immediately call Ram customer service back, just to be told that there is nothing they can do. Stating that the regional rep David Hooten had the final say and his decision could not be overturned. With over $1800 dollars worth of damage done to the truck, just giving in was not an option. So I call Ram CC back again, this time getting another person. I explained the situation to her and said let me see what I can do. Apparently all channels had not been followed, as they should have been. Breathing a sigh of relief and thinking surely someone with just a little bit of common sense would be able see what has happened and help me.

Late the next day, Tuesday the 4th of Aug, I get a call back from the Ram CC folks, I can tell from the tone of her voice it wasn't going to be good news for me. She stated, after further review they would not be warranting my truck damage, again stating that it had occurred from an outside force, such as road debris. I again plead my case but realize I'm getting nowhere fast. I hang up knowing I am out of options. I need my truck back for work, it's 2+ hours away, I'm racking up a huge rental bill now that Ram will not be covering. I have no option but to pay the inflated dealership charge and get my truck back.

What do I do?

I write this in hopes of someone out there knowing who I can talk to and/or someone who can help, advise or otherwise.

A little history on the truck. 10 months old, in the shop 12 plus times with various issues. 13 new tires, yes 13! 3 new wheels, countless TPS sensors, a cruise control failure, sliding rear window failure, driver side seat electrical failure, on top of the Ram factory recall warranty issues.

Please share this with anyone who you think could be of help.

Thanks.
I guess the emission system caused all the dudes failures. I feel sorry for him I couldn't imagine buying a new truck and having that many problems ,he should get a new one no questions asked if dodge is concerned with there customers, you can buy a house for price of these new trucks.

The 3 7.3's I had all ate the transmissions and 2 had to have multiple injectors replaced at $400 a pop (at the time) , I wasn't impressed. The 01' CTD 6spd I've got has been fine so far other than it's getting ready to get it's 3rd dash since new. I really think the truck feels "cheap" inside but I had my fill of PSD big expense, leave me on the side of the road, failures. I personally think all the new diesel trucks are junky especially for what they cost, I'd probably buy the chevy or the ford just because the interiors seem to be a little nicer and when I'm sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow I'd at least be comfortable.

Wow this got brought back up.I ride a 7.3 and have had good service/luck w them.My last one had 399K when I sold and other than a set UVC harnesses and a CSS it has been a good, reliable truck,it was just beat.My current one has 243K and I think its about ready for a set of inj's.I changed the valvebody in my 4R100 before I put the tuner on it and I feel like that, and monitoring the temp, has kept the trans alive.I agree that the Cummins are king when it comes to conversions and probably pull better but I don't think they are any more reliable or durable than a 7.3.IMO if I wasn't for Cummins Dodge would have been out of the truck business years ago.My 7.3 might not be the first up the hill but itll get over the hill, then the next one,and the next.I'm not a Ford guy I just cant/wont afford a Duramax/Cummins.Im not buyin a truck that cost more than my house did.

A new truck is 60k or so. We bought our 1900 sq single level brick and remodeled and only had 52k in it.its no shangri la but it'll do.alot of folks don't mind being a slave to a payment but I'm not one of em.

Since we're all thankful to have a place to compare our dicks, My 06 dodge is about to hit 300k. I've replaced one fuel injector, alternator, and fan clutch. Never once has it not started no matter the temp and it does not have a block heater. Never had any trouble with my auto either.

I'm not sure why anyone would want a new cummins

Because of that 3rd pedal just to the left of the brake pedal.
Because it only has one turbo.
Because of, from left to right, when I pop the hood; exhaust, engine, intake. I can see daylight under each side of the engine.
Because even though mine is a "neutered" 6 speed, I never took it out of 6th coming back from Dixie Run until I took my exit past Asheville.
Because it was $10k cheaper than a comparable Ford or GM product.
Most importantly, because I liked it :D

We bought ours I think it's around 1900 sq ft put down laminate floors painted inside new roof and heat pump on 2.65 acres for 47k but ours was a foreclosure
