Thinking of getting AAA....

Had AAA gold before, its a joke. Between the wait times and their dumb diesel policies I now carry some coverage through my insurance company (Geico). No issues with them getting the dually towed to the shop when the alternator crapped out and I just didn't have time to fix it.

I was told the same thing. But it's crap because other than suspension and maybe axles, it's the same as a 3/4 ton unless it's a dually. A dually I could understand.

Yeah, told that to them when I called but it made no difference to her.
 
I've been towed maybe 4 times in the last 20 years. Most I've ever paid for a tow is $75. I'm money ahead doing cash as I go.

That said, got a year of Good Sam "free" when I bought the motorhome. Hope I never have to find out how good/bad it is.

yea, I talked with 1 of the owners of a tow biz dn here. he def talked about what AAA pays.
atleast that wait time the other day let me talk her into driving it out after she sent me pics of where and how she was stuck.
Back to the wait times, she called somewhere around 12 to 1 . after she was home. we had 1 guy call around 6 pr 7 wanting to know if we still needed winched out.

Not when you have to tow a large RV. I had this towed from URE to Raleigh for free. Guy said it would have cost me 800 or more.

I have had the RV towed, 4 tires changed so for me it has been worth it.

^^^ yeah I'd say it's worth it for heavy trucks and RVs as most tire changes require expensive specialty tools and equipment.

As a tow plan for most passenger vehicles, I think there are multiple other better options. I think my wife even has a roadside assistance option in her car insurance and it's like $12/year and will tow up to like 200 miles.
 
I have AAA, and I like the piece of mind. I have had years where I used the tow service 4 or 5 times. I have had years where I never used it. I have the Gold, and I have utilized the 200 miles of free towing per tow quite a few times, and those tows paid for my membership for a couple years. I use to travel a lot for work and AAA gave me piece of mind that my wife and kids wouldn't have to deal with towing a car when I was out of town.

Nick - for you, I say it may not be worth it right now unless you could see needing to have the XJ towed from URE to Va Beach for instance. I have a several vehicles and one always seems to need to tow once or twice a year.
 
It's basically insurance.
Like all insurance, in the long run it rarely is a good deal for you. If it was, they wouldn't be in business.
You're paying for piece of mind and convenience. RockCity is basically self-insuring and willing to deal w/ it himself.

As I get older, the value of not worrying about stuff seems to be increasing to me.

That reminds me - need to get AAA or something, lol.
 
With the invention of smart phones, peace of mind involves googling a tow company and calling them direct and spending a few $ as needed for a tow and not waiting 3 hours for the AAA guy to finally show up.
 
With a kid in college out of state .... and the fact we drive junk .... we have had the gold package for years and it has paid for itself many times over. One good thing ( at least in the gold package) they have to take you where you want it towed.
When our Honda Odyssey dropped the transmission on the interstate near Morristown TN (approx. 40 miles this side of Knoxville)
They towed us home. We had to pay for a 100 miles, but still cheaper than an out of town fix, a rental car. and a motel.
Plus the fact the trans shop ended up being liable for the repair .....

Also, keeps me from having to get out of bed at whenever daughter #1 runs out of gas.

wouldn't be without it for a hot minute. they've always come right away, towed where I want and for free. add the wife in the mix and its necessary.
