First off, we have a great sheriff in Lee County. But, he's up for re-election. Today's paper (Sanford Herald) has an article about his opponent (who they seem to favor).

Headline of the front-page article is: "Dodson explains decision to leave military"

Sounds like he decided to take early retirement or something, doesn't it?

No....the article goes on to say he went AWOL in 1983... Kind of a big whammy for a such a soft soft headline. I almost didn't read the article.

Seems he signed up for infantry, went to jump school, and then got assigned somewhere in Washington state, where he was the only paratroop-trained person in his outfit. Sounds to me like they got him out of their way...must have been a real asshole (or something).

Anyway, he missed his wife, so just leaves post. All he got is an 'other than honorable' discharge.

Thats some "decision to leave the military".

Having personally dealt with my Marines going UA (USMC version of AWOL), and dealing with the enormous hassle that ensues once they disappear - I hold such people in high contempt.

It's not as if they don't show up for work and there's no check next to their name for attendance. We start calling their phone, their families phones, local hospitals and jails to track them down. Drive to their house, and in the Reserves, that meant sometimes across multiple states. Only to have the turd pretend to not be home when we are knocking on his door with his truck in the driveway.

We once emptied an entire dumpster to find a broken fax machine because it was still considered serialized gear for our Company HQ. (the poor kid who tossed it is probably still being hazed on the garbage covered floor of that dumpster) So we will go to great lengths to track down our missing guys. And this is in the U.S. not some traitorous Bowe Berghdahl disappearing in Indian country stuff.

There is one little bastard of mine in particular in Virginia still needs to be dragged into the tree line and beaten. He had a giant motto tattoo of an Eagle Globe and Anchor put on his back AFTER we kicked him out for refusing to play anymore. I regret not letting him drown in the swamps of Camp Lejuene when the opportunity presented itself.

But for someone like that to want to be a Sheriff, who is an oath and contract breaker, is disgusting. I would expect them to have the moral fiber of a wet price of cardboard.

Missed his wife... most of us who didn't marry strippers missed ours. Or we missed kids being born, their first steps, their birthdays, weddings, funerals, holidays, breaking open a cold one with the boys, and all those other wonderful moments you sacrifice for a greater good. None of that is an excuse to be a sorry piece of shit.

This should be a slam dunk in a debate or very useful in a campaign strategy to defeat him.

Well Fort Lewis has a few Airborne units on jump status, between the LRS companies generally every brigade has one. Just because you went to jump school doesn’t mean you’re going to be sent to the 82nd. It’s needs of the Army.

He needs to hope veterans don’t call him out for even trying to act like he served with any honor.

The only thing I"l say is I never heard of a 9-5 war. I have never seen the shooting stop to put a band aid on a boo boo. Yes I was in the Air Force. We have close friend 5/Special Forces that was prisoner, he was never told or heard Oh we cant do that, it mite hurt his feelings.

I don't know anything about Dodson but it'll be hard to beat Carter I believe. I hear very few people say anything negative about him. He was one of the resource officers at Lee Senior when I was there, was super personable and down to earth back then .

My only fear is that the special snowflakes and war/military hating democrats will follow him in droves....

Funniest thing I've read all weekend!

Here is his "explanation":

it’s not a rumor. It’s true. It’s something I’m not proud of. It was 35 years ago. I was very immature and made a decision without thinking it through. I was in the Army and attended and graduated from basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. After basic training I attended and graduated from infantry school (AIT) at Fort Benning. Then after infantry school I attended and graduated from airborne jump school at Fort Benning. I wanted to go to Fort Bragg badly. Instead I was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington. I was assigned to a non-airborne unit. I was not happy about that and didn’t feel very welcomed. I suppose that was because I had earned my paratrooper wings and the other guys were not airborne qualified. Again I asked to be sent to Bragg but my commanding officer advised me that it could take up to a year for that to happen if it happened at all. Of course I didn’t like that answer. Instead of sucking it up I made a stupid, immature decision and left my unit and came back home. I called down to Fort Bragg and asked to be processed out of the Army. They tried to change my mind. I wish I would have listened to them but I stuck to my decision to get out and go back to work for my family. Dusty it is a decision that I regret to this day and not proud of it. My son served 7 years in the Army and attained the rank of Sergeant. I’m very proud of him. We also assist Robin Sage which I’m sure you are aware of in which special forces students go through a qualification course to earn the green beret. We also let them to use our gun shop several times a year to help them. The reason I tell you this is because I certainly support our troops and have many friends in the military. Unfortunately my decision 35 years ago is something that I can’t take back. My career in business and especially Law Enforcement is beyond reproach. I have accomplished more in 15 years than some officers have in 30 years. I still enjoy Law Enforcement very much and enjoy serving. This issue of my military service came up when Chatham County Sheriff’s Office hired me. I’m grateful that they gave me a chance and hired me. My career in law enforcement has been awesome ever since. Take a look at my bio, awards and about page on my Facebook page. I did receive an “other than honorable “ discharge. Once again Dusty this happened 35 years ago. I am not the same man today that I was 35 years ago. I think my record in business, law enforcement and serving as a Lee County Commissioner show this. I’m sure some folks will try to have a field day with this but as they say, it is what it is. I have many ideas to improve our Sheriff’s Office and I’m hoping that citizens will at least listen to what I have to say and then base everything on that.

Said that down in the comments of this post on Fecesbook: February 2 at 8:32pm (that's how the newspaper caught the story)

His responses to comments about this show his character. I don't know the man, but I know what I read.

If it's been 35 years, I have no issue with moving on and letting the past three and a half decades speak for themselves. Unless he has been lying about his service, then he sucks and should be publically shamed.

We all make mistakes and if he is willing to own up to it, I'd say he's righted his ship.

I dunno about that, I'm 54....a lot of things I did 35 years ago have a great bearing on my life, decision-making, and character now.

Agreed. I'm 55 and proudly display my honorable discharge from the US Army in my office.
Along with my Primary Leadership Course certificate. (PNCOC) for you combat arms types.
A persons military service should be considered when they are running for office, looking for a job, etc...
Regardless of how "young and stupid" i was.
I did a lot of dumbass shit when i was active duty. 3 article 15's to be exact. For stupid shit like being an idiot in public.
Imagine that.... Never once was i AWOL.
Ponder that.

Gets elected county commissioner on Republican ticket doesn't like how party is run so switches to Democrat.

Meh. I haven't read all the links in the thread but I did read the guys response. All I have to contribute is that I hope that I'm not judged on my decisions 10 yrs ago, (I'm not 30 yet so I can't reach that far back!). I did some incredibly stupid things back then that I feel like have no relation to who I am now.

35 Years ago or not, no forgiveness from me....

If he had said something disparaging or even vaguely racist 35 years ago, it would be in bold headlines, How could going AWOL be less of an issue?

It depends on what those bad decisions you made were, and on their relevance to the subject at hand.

Bad decisions ten years (Or 35 Years) ago to the welfare of a child can and should negate a person from EVER having a position where they are responsible for a child's welfare.

Bad decisions ten years (Or 35 years) ago regarding shirking a huge responsibility like protecting the nation, the constitution, and the people of America, after swearing an oath to do exactly that, Should Absolutely negate that person from EVER having that kind of responsibility again (Like being a LEO).

Do would he be allowed to conceal carry?

Pursuant to N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-404, an individual is disqualified from receiving a pistol purchase permit
if they have received a dishonorable discharge from the military. More restrictive language is applied to
an applicant for a concealed handgun permit. Pursuant to N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-415.12(b)(7), an applicant
for a concealed handgun permit is disqualified if they have received a discharge “under conditions other
than honorable."

To hell with conceal, I'm not sure he is legally allowed to OWN a firearm.

I hate to use this as a source, but....
Military rushed to add 4,000 to gun ban list - CNN

Well I'm not military and I'm def not trying to defend the guy, but the comment said "other than honorable." I didn't think that was the same as "dishonorable" discharge which often means a felony is involved.

Other than honorable is a totally different ball game the dishonorable. But in the circumstance at hand anything besides Honorable would lead me to believe he is a turd trying to stay afloat. Going AWOL is a level of cowardice I can’t wrap my head around and in the 16 years I have been in I have heard it all. The bad part is, a lot of the time, it’s faster to just flush the toilet so, they get over with a Other Than Honorable. Pushing for a dishonorable takes a lot of requirements to be met. Being butt hurt that he couldn’t jump from a airplane is a pretty bitch ass excuse to cut and run if you ask me.

My dad used to tell a story when I was little....part one of many life lessons he taught me...about sticking to your commitments.

Not much to it other than he enlisted back in WWii as soon as he graduated HS... At one point, he was at Ft. Sill, OK, at the field artillery school. Probably early '44. Anyway, he was a sergeant, and not a real big guy, but had to escort 2 AWOLS back to Bragg, in handcuffs, by train. Him, a PFC that was shorter and skinnier than he was, a single GI 45, and the two handcuffed prisoners. Dad really impressed on me that going AWOL, or breaking any commitment, and you were lower than dirt.
