So I'm not 100% positive but I believe my 09 has a tow rating of 11K. Might be 9.8K From what I'm reading it depends on the gears in it. I'm looking at how to get my son's 88 MJ and my 94 xj trail rig to Harlan this summer around the 4th. I do not know either jeeps weight. I know mine on my car hauler is 6440. I do not know its weight or the trailers weight yet. I'm pretty sure bumper pulling these two on a 10K equipment trailer is a bad idea but thought I'd ask those that may have had the pleasure of trying it... Please share any experience or thoughts...... No I doubt I will do it but just looking for info from the tow pros.....

If both Jeeps weigh ~4k and the trailer weighs ~3k, you're overloaded. Get a bigger truck or find a different way to haul them.

I used to pull 2 TJs on a 10k equipment trailer with a 7.3 F250. I considered that truck barely adequate for the job. No way I'd ever try it with a F150.

If you could find a light enough trailer I think it's possible but I don't see that happening. Realistically your rig is ~4500 lbs, an MJ would be the same-ish. So 8-9K just in rigs. You'd need a 26-28 Ft 14K to get the load carrying capacity, and that trailer would weight ~4-5K Lbs. So 12-14K Lbs total, ain't no way in helll I'd try that with an F150.

Just drive your XJ. No way I’d tow 2 rigs with F150 especially the route to Harlan.
This was kind of my thinking..... If anything is driven with will be his MJ. Worse case if something happens park him somewhere along the way take mine to Harlan come back get him..... He's 20 about to be 21 and has way more ball/stupidity that I do.

I was joking about the XJ. Hope y’all have a good trip

I would rent a 3/4 or 1 ton truck.

We have thought about that but they ain't cheap..... I'm heading up on July 2nd and I think he plans to do the same. Maybe someone going up might have room on a trailer. I still have time to figure this out.....

No way I’d do that. There’s some steep pulls going to Harlan and some narrow curvt roads on the last leg of 421. There’s a difference in having the power to pull, and also having the power plus the suspension and brakes to handle it all. If you were towing on flat ground to the beach I’d say maybe if you had no other option.

You can rent a dually from Enterprise for $400 from Wednesday to Monday and get unlimited mileage. Website says 500 miles but they waive that if you call them.

Worst case, make sure both are road worthy if needed and tow which ever one breaks. Drive one and tow one, switch if needed.

Nope. Would not even consider it. Nor a single rear wheel F250 for that matter. 2 rigs on any Trailer is going to be a considerable amount of tounge weight.

I wouldn't attempt that senerio in anything less than a dual rear wheel Ton.

Ideally the tag would have a weight distribution hitch. A gooseneck would handle the weight better allowing even more to be placed on the front axle of the tow vehicle.

The transmisions ability to muster the torque over the long haul would be enough for me to choose against the idea. I over worked one in New Mexico years ago. Made for a very expensive trip. One Transmission out, one Transmission when I got home.

Hmm when I checked this last it was about double that. We have also thought about me renting an F150 or like that and me driving it him driving my truck....

Way cheaper than rebuilding the transmission, paying overweight ticket in VA or the lawsuit from the attorney of the bus load of nuns.

Your XJ has to weight at least 5500. No way will it work buddy.

I pulled my Toyota behind my old 99.5 Chevy 1500 to Harlan once. 2 weeks later it had a new transmission. It is quite a climb with one rig alone.
I drive an 08 F150 company truck daily. If two people sit on the tailgate it drops a lot. I hate to think if it actually pulled real weight, it would not do well.

You would think wrong. I actually know the route well. Have been going to Harlan in my F150 with my jeep since 2010 every 4th for this same event. It tows my jeep well but I doubted it would tow much more....

Yea well I had to ask. I was pretty sure I knew the answer.

Cannot wait to get back up there. Really excited about one of the boys joining me again.

That's a bit hyperbolic. The hitch on my 3/4t Dodge is good for 1500# and 15k without weight distribution. It's rated to 1600# and 16k with. It's towed that and more, and does just fine. I prefer a gooseneck for two rigs on a flatbed, but a tag trailer does fine.

Newer trucks have even higher ratings. Get a 2500 with 18s like Jody's, and it'll do over 8k on the rear axle in SRW. More often than not, the brakes and bearings between a 3/4t and 1t are the same. Only difference is in the springs and the extra pair of tires.

It's a moot point, since he's asking about a 150 with a 11-12k tow rating. But folks are quick to forget that a stock F150 comes with bigger brakes than were provided on dually trucks just a few years ago.

The brakes on my 05 F150 are huge.

Enterprise truck rental. Rent a Cummins for a week. It’s not much more than renting any car. Typically covers for 1k miles.

Single wheel 2500/3500 is fine, and on a tag trailer is fine. Just take it easy and don’t try to fly.

Spend extra time getting the tongue weight correct. May have to get creative on which is loaded first and in what direction.

A tag along trailer pulled a chero-racecar and jku to koh and back behind a single wheel 2500 Cummins this February. No issues other than a side by side knocking the back window out of the Cummins on the return trip.

I think this is that grey area of what ratings are vs what's actually been done vs comfort level. If you said 1995 powerstroke or cummings...you could hear the internet collectively orgasm and then tell you that you'd be able to tow 6 jeeps and some heavy equipment. Pending your trucks actual set up, you're probably in the same ballpark of capability as those 90's diesels. This weekend I'm planning on moving my 96 350 crew and 79 bronco on the same trailer with my new expedition with no hesitation.

That's dumb. We're talking modern trucks, not fantasies about antiques.

Right...and I’d bet had he said he was towing with one of those antiques, most would say no problem. His modern truck is as capable as those antiques. So the issue becomes the stigma of being a gas half ton rather than a diesel one ton.

So this would be ok to tow two Jeeps with...
