22lr as home defense round

*Disclaimer*
Only the police and the military should have guns.
Because they are all fully semi automatic and kill people for no apparent reason.

Now, in my world a 12 gauge jacked up with 00 3" magnums and a .40 cal with 10 mags works for me.
Your mileage may vary.

I choose to be prepared.
:)

12ga is my preferred home defense, its like sending 15 pea shooter off at the same time lol

I would suggest other options first, but a .22 lr beats a sharp stick. Speaking from somewhat relevant experience, a 22 lr will f you up. I caught a ricochet to the eye and was immediately on the dirt. For a sober attacker it ought to work fine. I carry a 22 magnum most days, I would suggest it in a PMR30.

Pic of said eye injury for reference. Always wear your eye protection yall.

x2! When I took my CCW class the sheriff that taught it told a story of a high speed pursuit that ended in ~20 rounds sent down range & ~12 hit the guy's body. Ended up coming to blows after and when he was finally subdued/died he tested positive for PCP. Could have been a long winded lie/scare tactic, but being I'm full-size at 6'6" I prefer full-size self-defense!

Their winter clothing stopped the rounds. Wouldn't be my self defense weapon, but as mentioned better than nothing.
I've heard this too and its another reason for something with more powder behind the pill!

Not to derail, but have you seen the AR upper chambered in .410. That would be a pretty cool home defense weapon for the ladies. I would think the recoil wouldn’t be much with the buffer spring and action eating up most of it.

I've seen pics ...id love to have one..

So I will say guns are bad and should only be used by police and military. Especially those automatic assault AK-15s that have 1,000 round clips of heat seeking killer trained bullets.

With that out if the way; I say carry what you can safely and accurately shoot (in non threatening events) with the highest magazine capacity you can find. For me, the 9mm flavor works just fine.

Agree 100% and f*** 1986 unconstitutional gun laws

Here's an article with a graph someone worked up about 22lr and self defense.
In the end it shows that there was little if any difference in caliber when people get shot in the real world. Most of the time getting shot by anything changes people's minds.

.22 LR For Home Defense or EDC?

My dad has a S&W Shield EZ in .380. There's very little recoil. He has bad arthritis in his hands and is very recoil sensitive. Even he says that the recoil is minimal. I would recommend taking a look at that gun. I would much rather have a .380 than a .22lr.

I’ve always been an advocate of carrying what you can use well. Recoil management and follow up shots are going to play a big part in stopping any threat. If you can’t handle that xds chambered in .45, you better hope your first shot is a fatal one. I’ve got a 22/45 lite and if that is what was close to me at the time, I would not hesitate to grab and use. 11 rounds of .22 center mass would not be a good situation for the bad guy. I don’t get caught up in the whole caliber debate because i shoot what I feel comfortable shooting and think everyone should as well. I myself would not want to be shot with any caliber.

The only problem with using 22lr for defense is that it's a lot harder to explain why you shot the threat the extra 5 times after they were already down. If you shoot someone, and they live, the threat is never gone, ever. I want my target dead before it hits the ground.

As noted previously, I'm on the side of 'something is better than nothing'...but I've been in a process for a couple years now of obsoleting pistols, shotguns and small caliber rifles as defense weapons. I still have readily available shotguns for door breaches...but that's about all I'd use them for any more. I don't want the over penetration or the collateral damage in the event a loved one is grabbed, do you know your pattern with buck shot at 10ft vs 10yds? Handguns, similar situation, I'm good enough for minute of man, but at this point for me, is really a last resort. Small caliber hand guns/rifles to me just aren't as forgiving, and I don't want to rely on perfection during an imperfect scenario. These days my go to is going to be some semblance of an SBR...quick acquisition, maneuverable and quite a bit of fire power. Even in public, I've found myself with a folder in a 'kids bag' more frequently than having a holster. I'd highly recommend taking a look at ballistic gel testing videos, no it's not the same as human tissue...but better than an article saying a 22 is just as much of a deterrent...which to me is similar to 'shooting them in the leg'. This is a good starting point for the gel test rabbit hole:

My wife has a ruger sr 22 it’s a great gun and it’s what she is comfortable with I carry a 9mm they are the only 2 rounds I can afford to practice with enough lol

Small handguns are the worse for recoil. No mass. If someone is recoil adverse put a bigger gun in their hands like a full-size.

Also good instruction on how to rack a gun and hold it will eliminate most recoil issues.

My wife is great at teaching women how to shoot real Guns. 22s are for fun not self defense.

Just shoot me a PM if you want some private instruction with her and your female friend.

I like the middle section of this. A lot of people think, the stronger the grip on the frame = less felt recoil. When in actuality it’s making sure your elbows are facing outward which forces the recoil inward towards you and keeps the muzzle more flat for better follow up shots and sight acquisition. While your grip is very important, it doesn’t mean you need to death grip the frame.

Yes sir, proper hand placement and grip for each hand. They are not the same amount of force. Along with proper arm extension and just a bit of elbow twist makes any handgun shoot with less felt recoil.
