Gas Super Duty's to avoid

18 alumiduty with 6.2 and 4.10 gears 11.9 empty and 9 towing on 37 inch maxxis razrs

Jesus...after reading all this, I'd seriously do an 05+ front axle under your 7.3 dually and just keep on keepin on. Beats a truck payment and higher insurance. Still gotta put gas in a new truck and tires and oil...so...eff it. Keep what you got. Ima rock my 02 LB7 forever. 318k and counting.

I agree w/ this to a point...actually a lot.

BUT, swapping the F-350 to 4wd will cost (rough, out-of-the-butt-hence-the-smell estimate) 3-5K. My father just bought well-used, but functional (just took it to Cape Lookout w/ a slide-in) F-350 crew short 4x4 for just north of that.

The proceeds from the sale w/cover 75-100% of the "new" truck & bought w/ cash (I hate checks, as much as I hate payments)

Plus, the big ol' bitch will not fit in my shop & leave any working room.

I have zero sentimental attachment for this truck - I had more for the '78 I gave away.

As tempting as it would be to swap the axle/trans/t'case/shafts, etc, I'm going to try & sell/replace first.

My '70 Suburban (that will probably cart me to my final resting place, just like it brought me home from the hospital all those years ago) deserves a royal 4wd swap - 1-tons & all (think oversized mall crawler - minus the Cock Star wheels & ass-drop stance)

PS

I'm under no illusion that I'm going to sell this for "putting my kid through college" money...7.3 w/ sort of low miles or not.

I just dropped the tank (pick-up horn broke) to clean it & replace the necessary parts, still a 20-year old truck.

How are the v-10's?

Usually just fine until they decide to "Pez dispenser" a plug on I-77 towing to Harlan

I have an 08 V10 with 4.10 and it's more than enough for the standard jeep and trailer. It likes to rev high, but has enough power to get through the mountains. 130k and there have been no issues with the engine or trans. Around 11-12 mpg driving unloaded and 7-9 mpg towing.

I have been thinking about a crew cab F250 for a mix (tow, town, 3rd vehicle, bunny slope wheeling, and standard truck stuff) but have been leery of the 5.4s. Had a 2v years ago in a F150 and it was pretty solid, but did have some quirks.

Have been thinking about Fords, Dodges, and Chevy trucks (would probably look into SAS for that for strength and reliability, but cost prohibitive for what I need) and have been reading tons about them all, and still stuck in a circle of all of them.

Has anyone had any experience with the new 7.3 gasser?

No first hand experience, but I’ve been watching TFL Truck on YouTube and they’ve done extensive real world testing. The empty mpg is impressive, close to 20mpg thanks to the 10 speed trans. The towing is excellent, and not that you’d need it but there’s now a super charger from ProCharger available for them and they add over 200HP and make it more powerful than the Powerstroke. And it all bolts on and looks factory.

They towed over Ike’s Gauntlet and many other places with it in stock form. If I were going to buy a brand new truck I doubt I’d even consider the Powerstroke myself and I’d go right to the new 7.3 without a doubt.

The fact that there’s already a supercharger and aftermarket headers available for that motor tells me than in the future there’s gonna be some killer Ford powered motor swap options in the next 10 years. Step aside LS fans (talking to myself)

So 600hp, and the same torque as an 05 Common Rail Cummins ;) I'm sure adding 200hp is totally "cool" with the stock cooling system too.

But I get it, some people like big HP numbers and others like big diesel torque. I like torque and mpg.

FWIW, the 7.3 real world fuel economy numbers are exactly what you would expect from a big gasser, and exactly what always happens with Ford's BS inflated MPG numbers:

I think the more interesting fact is that the MPG difference between the 7.3 and 6.2 gasser is probably negligible if I had to guess. So there is probably no downside to owning a 7.3 V8 other than the up front cost of the engine upgrade from the dealership.

This.

They really are great engines. However the plug thing usually strikes at the worst times. I’m getting ready to put a head on our 2V 450 service truck because someone already replaced a plug and used a helicoil vs a timesert and it launched again.

Keeping in mind the plug thing, the V10 ford’s are some of the better 3/4 and 1 Ton bargains left.

How are the v-10's?

I have 2 2v v10's and have been happy with both of them. One just rolled over 255k and one is pretty close to 250k. My wife's excursion has had no engine problems, but needed a transmission rebuild around 180k. Its mostly a family vehicle, but is does tow 8-10 times a year.

The other is in a f450. It pretty much stays hooked to the trailer all the time. Rarely gets driven without towing. It broke something in the bottom end around 200k. This brings me to the best part of a 2v v10. It received a 80k mile junkyard engine for $1000 bucks and a weekends worth of work. You can pick up reman engines with a warranty for $3500. Cheap and easy to maintain.

All that aside, if I were looking for something, I would look for a -05 up v10 with the 5r110 transmission. I have not personally drove this combo, but I think this would be the ticket. I'll probably replace the f450 with a -05 up v10 f450-f550 eventually (years down the road).
