Tropical depression Fred

On another note Samaritan purse came by my house and wanted to help with the demo. @obullfish maybe reach out to them for help with the cleanup.

they said their biggest issue is this disaster is it is getting little to zero news coverage. So people out of the close by areas don’t know about it. They need volunteers to help with the clean up. They said they have basically no local volunteers but that’s because everyone in the community is out helping their neighbors.

@obullfish I’m guessing you went by my house today and talked with my dad he couldn’t remember your name when we got there. Let us know if you need any help with your family’s place. I’ll help any way I can.
Yeah, went by to check on ya when I got out of Cruso. They were hit in the flood in 04 but nothing like this one. They are probably going to just walk away after this one. They are pretty shook up over the destruction at their place and the community.

Ya I can only imagine, Miranda is really really shook up and has said she isn’t moving back into our house in Clyde. I wish I would have made her leave sooner when the police come beating on your door and say you have 5 minutes to leave or we won’t come back for you if you call 911 it really got her upset.

I’m sure they didn’t have any warning or very little of a warning

You’re not kidding about the news. I live in a small town half way between Raleigh & Greensboro and there has been zero coverage of this on the news. I get my news about this disaster from this thread and the folks that post on the North Carolina Camping book of faces page. Unfortunately, Laurel Banks Campground looks like it’s a total loss with 2 dead and 2 still missing. I cant believe it’s not making the news in the same state that this happened in. Prayers for all of you that went through this and your families.

Laurel banks is pretty much wiped off the map. If anyone was in the campground when it hit it is a miracle anyone survived. A few hundred yards above the campground there was a mudslide that came off the mountain and crossed the road and river before ripping through the campground. I am having a hard time with seeing the community I grew up in go through this and there’s nothing I can do to fix it. The first person confirmed dead (Jack Krolak) I sat on his porch a couple months ago with friends of mine from Alaska that were here visiting them and us. Pictures of where the mudslide came off the mountain and some of the campground across the river.

Just got a call about my aunt and uncle up in McEwen, TN just lost their entire farm. He has about 500 acres up there. Luckily the house sits up in a 10’ mound, but the barn, all of his trailers including a big horse trailer, they found his dually truck mangled in the trees with living quarters in it, all of his farm equipment, his 4 wheelers, Ranger, he had a riding rink for the horse.

Said they woke up in the night to the horse raising hell and they went out to try and save them. At this point the horse noses were barely above water. In the process of letting them out, my uncle got swept down stream, he ended up bouncing off of trees, breaking branches trying to hold on in the current. Ended up in one tree that he had to abandon because the water was still rising. Ended up catching another tree and was stuck in it for 2 hrs until rescue came.

my aunt started getting washed away as well. Had some wire get wrapped around her neck and it was all she could do to get it off. Ended up pinned against a shed in the current and climbed up enough to hold onto a gutter until revue came.

Total devastation to their farm. The water has now gone, and they went walking around to see what could be salvaged. Everything was gone. Saddles, feed buckets, equipment… fence posts that were concreted in the ground are gone… luckily the house is there, but they lost everything and damn near lost their lives.

Holy shit! I’m so glad your family is alive and I’m sorry for their loss

@obullfish - I’m so sorry for your loss. Since we don’t get any news about what goes on in our own state, I looked on news websites from your area. I read about Mr. Krolak and I’m so sorry for his friends and family. I’m sorry for your loss. The pictures you shared are unbelievable. Complete devastation.
Thank you. I feel so bad for everyone affected by this disaster.

If anyone would like to help I’ll post a link to a great organization that has a large presence in the community helping anyone affected. I dropped off a truck load of things needed currently and they are very organized with their efforts.
Going to do just that, thanks.

I cannot imagine…😣

I imagine as Henri moves through the NE, any and all coverage will be on that, no matter how bad it is.

Praying for everyone up there and hope that more help and coverage come, so everyone can try to recover as quickly as possible.

There was also ridiculous wicked flooding in middle TN over the weekend, sounds even worse than in Haywood etc.
Just a shitty time all around

Not discounting the Whole Total losses, but seeing the vehicles totaled out, is the same feeling I get when I see the Cali wildfires. The Classics, Jeeps, & other autos, destroyed. Damn!

Question.

My buddy Joe lived in Candler since he was a boy and is my age now. He sold out and moved last year to Alabama because it’s red red red and has fantastic fishing…plus he gets to kill big rattlesnakes daily.

I know some about the area, it has flooded many times in the past. Was this event worse as far as conditions or worse due to population density increase or?

@Loganwayne showed where his house had flooded much deeper in a previous flood.

population density hasn't changed much in the effected areas. I think the big difference is no one expected it this time there really wasn't a warning. also the worst damage was in cruso at the HEAD of the river. where most of the damage occurred typically the river is 1/3-1/4 the size of what the river is near my house.

its all really speculation at this time still but they are starting to think that a large slide blocked the river then when the river pushed through it caused the "wave" of water that caused most of the damage in the upper end of the county. which isnt hard to imagine being the case there are places in there so steep that once you get to the river you better plan to fish for 6-8 hours cause you cant climb out the bank on either side its so steep.
