Chippers…

Get another tractor. 30hp geared tractors are easy to come.by. I see some cheap ones come up down your way pretty often. Or build you a little power pack unit for it.
This is actually a really solid idea. A $3k 30-40hp tractor from the 60s or 70s for the chipper, plus it can do double duty when the other tractor is down or you need two implements on one job.

Ya know, I’ve been meaning to find or build a PTO generator. This would be a good opportunity to build a power pack with a 3pt hitch and PTO.

Now just to find the right power setup. As always, might as well do it with LS power.

I guess I could find an inline Ford or gm 4cyl and it should be plenty of power. Would be a fun little build to tinker with.

I agree. Thankfully I do t have any fields to bush hog. ;)
Dressing up a long driveway with a box blade and discing aren't fun either 😂. Better just go ahead and get a second tractor. You know the wife is going to want a garden one year and taking the backhoe off to cultivate twice a week is going to get old quick!

Actually, the wife has thousands and thousands of tulips (among others) to plant and do some custom local flowers.

So, it’s already started…

This is a joke, right? A regular residential lawnmower probably has more power than a 9N. Are there LS swap kits for 9Ns?

Not a joke. Just looking for another cheap, readily available tractor with a PTO. 9ns are everywhere and should have enough power for a simple chipper and even a box blade and land plane.

I got a 4bt with your name all over it. Comes with a trans and transfercase. Multiple ratios and two outputs. Run your processor and a chipper, Lol!

I thought about a 4bt..

Challenge with a 4bt is weight. Once trans and case are added and the implement, I can’t move it with my little tractor unless it’s trailer mounted.

Ok so we’ve talked chipper options to the point it’s now a potential build thread…

Going off on another tangent, anyone have a wood splitter they like? @jeepinmatt ?

I’m actually in the market for two. One will be a small one used about 3 times a year (stored at a summer house in garage) and the other one will be used on a regular basis at home.

I got this one for about $700 a few years ago from Rural King.
They don't list it on their site anymore. Not a single issue with it. Cranks every time, runs good, has split everything I've ever put in front of it, with the exception of a few knotted pieces that I couldn't get to stand still. It will slice through most knots. Only complaint is the retract detent on the handle doesn't alway lock in, but that may just be an adjustment.

I picked this thing up at Northern Tool I bet about 15 years ago for somewhere around a grand if I recall. I've used the absolute piss out of this thing and I can't remember of a single problem it's given me. Has split some of the biggest and dense red oak and some of the greenest gum I've about ever seen. It ain't that big, burley hay bail slingin', pork chop eatin', flannel wearin' sumbitch, but more like that little stocky messican that'll keep showing up for work at dawn and don't leave until after dusk, taking his hour lunch in 45 minutes (15 minute lunch on his hot plate, 30 minute siesta) day after day after mfn day...and won't complain for shit!

I've always kept in covered or indoors (even if I left it out at the wood pile one night I'd put a plastic tote or something over the engine). Used it to make some money back in college splitting up wood and selling on CraigsList. Never forget the week I bought it, I had it paid for by that weekend. I was probably splitting up a few cords a week back when I was cranking.

I don't remember the ton-capacity (27-29 if I recall) on it but it's got a 6.5hp Briggs, which imo is where you want to focus. I'd personally rather have a Briggs over a Honda, but that's just me. Either way, I'd buy one with a decent engine (the way I look at it, they're all the same aside from the engine and size of the cylinder...which probably isn't going to be much different in the size you're looking for).

Realistically, a machine with the specs Dave posted earlier would probably be just fine but I don’t want to be cutting at capacity too often.
Fawk, if you want that, just come by my place and get Matt's old DR. I think one of the tires is flat. I'll knock off a few bucks for that.

Shit! $8k? That’s about 4x what I want to spend.

Your going to be stuck with the small homeowner options then.
This is what I have seen. I have been wanting to pickup a chipper for a while now, since I could use a good amount of wood chips, but i know the homeowner model isnt going to cut it. It currently alot cheaper to stop and talk to every tree service i see in a yard around here.
