Tow "tag" in NC tech?

If you've gotta tow something, I have a truck and a 26ft gooseneck. Road trips are cool too.

Nothing like resurrecting a 15 yr old thread, at least not the first to do so... ;-)

Bought a new to me truck back in Dec. Asked to transfer old plate, regular, not weighted but registered as 5000lb. Old truck certainly weighed more than that and I frequently flat towed Jeep, bbq pit, etc. with no issues from LE or DMV. New truck curb weight is 7044 and GCVW is 8510. Been running old plate for weeks, even talked to DMV today about upcoming registration renewal process and told paperwork would all come out in the wash in another couple weeks. Well... new plate showed up today, "weighted" with number KSnnnn at 8000. Both were TK style. The 8000 is obviously not enough and as its weighted might catch more attention? Or not. Maybe new registration will show up for the old tag name? Kinda hate to lose /dev/ram, particularly as I don't tow regularly.

What think? Up with weighted KSnnnn tag to the agreed good number of 13K for those times when towing? Call again and see if the personalized plate can be upped? Other?

They don’t have personalized weighted plates. Just like they don’t have Disabled Vet plates that can be registered for anything more the stock weight and nothing more. It’s all about $$$. Not about caring for the people in the situation they may be in.

They do have personalized weighted tags, actually. My uncle has one.

So this is the relevant portion of the title app. I've paid the property tax (ouch) so I guess I'll wait and see if a new registration shows up with the old plate. Still not sure what to do about the weight aspect since the GCVW is over 8000 anyway...

Since the old tag /dev/ram was weighted at 5000 (grandfathered I'm hoping) then I'm hoping the transfer will go thru and raise it to 8000, but not holding my breath.

Has anyone ever down graded their weighted plate?

Do I have to go to the tag office or can I do it online?

I did it two years ago, had to go in and sign something authorizing the change, and the lady gave the whole "are you sure??" spiel.

I did it on December 30th. I always go in because it's on my way to work and the one in Havelock is quick. In and out in 10 minutes or so, usually. Unless I mess up and wait until the VERY last day and everybody and their momma is in there renewing their tags too. Anyway, I just handed her my renewal thing and told her to drop them from 24,000 to 13,000. I didn't see the point in paying the full 565 bucks when the truck is just sitting in the yard waiting on me to rebuild the transmission. Truth be told, I may not even up them for a while since I don't have any heavy equipment any more to drag around on my trailer.

If you're going in anyway, it'd be the time to ask them if they still do the personalized weighted and get it right from the horse's mouth. I don't know why they'd stop it. You can get almost anything on a license plate, background wise. They've got more options than a 20 dollar chicken bucket!

An SUV being exempt from being weighted is false. They are good up to 10,000 pounds. Over that and you need a weighted tag. That being said, I have towed over 15k for years and never had a problem. YMMV.

not true, I have 2 of them!

07 Tundra, 18' trailer, 48 Willys. Standard tag on the tundra and the trailer is tagged as well. Should I get a weighted tag?

I've towed boats, enclosed trailers, mini-exs etc and have never had a single problem but since the Willys is operational now and wheeling trips are in the future....I would hate to get an overweight ticket from an over-zealous SHP.

Ha, no way. You've saved enough to pay for the ticket 10 times over.

Just looking at the statutes, I do not see anywhere that it calls that out.

Most SUVs are considered Passenger Vehicles, not Property Hauling Vehicles.

Here is the registration info for Passenger vehicles (including motorhomes): https://www.ncleg.gov/enactedlegislation/statutes/pdf/bysection/chapter_20/gs_20-87.pdf.
Here is the registration info for Property Hauling vehicles: https://www.ncleg.net/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/BySection/Chapter_20/GS_20-88.html

Here are 2 other statutes, that discuss size/weight:

Note; At one time I recall trucks towing campers/rv having to cover the pin weight of the trailer, but that doesnt seem to be listed anymore.

Never had a weighted tag on my truck and have towed all over the place with it. If I get ticketed I’ll pay it and keep on keeping on.

So I talked to the SGT at the local SHP here in town and we dug around the books. Yes, you can customize a weighted plate. News to me and proof that the contracted company ladies at the DMV aren’t the know all be all for the rules. Also, I inquired and no, you cannot “hang weight” on a standard plate. In other words DV, handicapped, specialty save the UNC woodpecker blue ridge parkway plates are capped for standard passenger vehicles. Only Weighted plates are “adjustable” for the weight of a truck + trailer + weight towed on said trailer = no ticket.

and apparently as always. YMMV.

Go to the DMV and ask.

They consider campers a residence and not a property hauling trailer.

Go to the DMV and ask.

I can't find where it says that in any of the state laws either. I wouldn't take someone's word for it. I'd want to see it written somewhere.
