An old coworker is selling these two old xjs. Thinking about snagging one, possibly the brown one. Its pretty unique and I was wondering if anyone recognized it? The guys name is Byron and I believe he used to run around with the mud devils if memory serves. He had a nice buggy at one point years ago.

Look man, I'm not gonna tell you what you should or shouldn't do. But the fact he is trying to sell them, not give them away, tells me they are overpriced, and the only thing more expensive than a cheap project vehicle is a "free" project vehicle. You got a wife and a couple kids and tractors and farms to worry with. You'll end up miles ahead buying something that is already being driven/wheeled and has been sorted out for $3k.

So get that tan/brown one and get to work because I know how stubborn you are!

Glad we are on the same page that this sounds like a terrible(ly fun) idea.

What kind of support / cage structure is under the back end of that brown one?
XJs are known for a lot of things, and body rigidity isn't one of them. If you plan to use it as a wheeler I'd expect that back end to have a lot of potential flex to it, and if you roll it it would likely fold in on itself.
For a street queen prob doesn't matter.

I *believe * it has a roll bar, if I remember correctly.

I dont think many (any?) of the mud devils are around here any more.
@farmboy is probably the last one I saw...

This isn't exactly accurate. The roof doesn't really play into the back of an XJ. The majority of the structure is in the "frame" and the body itself. There is quite a bit of structural panels in the body that help to keep it from folding like a toco.......

If you were to lay it on its side or top, what prevents the back from becoming a parallelogram?
Not arguing with you, I just want to understand. I've seen an awful lot of chopped XJs with twisted bodies.

Edit: I'm also really curious about how the tailgate is hinged

THIS IS FALSE..

just saying I have cut Xj's raced XJ's rolled XJ's they are fine and wont fold in half. only a non XJ owner would make that statement :)

they are shit boxes for a reason and they take a beating

just for the record I had and wheeled one for 8 years before converting to rustbucket metric Jeeps, AKA Toyotas.
Do not disagree on the beatings

It’s clear to me that none of yall are mechanical engineers. :flipoff2: I’m also too lazy to type a diatribe about it. Short answer, every piece plays into the structure, but the rear pillars are not a significant source of structural integrity for anything other than the rear roof.

I'm not en engineer.
I'm just a guy that employs them to complete my crazy ideas.

youtube vid idea:

slowly cut off the roof of an XJ and see when it finally parrellograms....
That is the funny part it has been done and nothing happened.

The sciences of sheet metal rust and gravitational variables multiplied by relatively humidity to the power of gravity times trail sodas.
...ah, I always forget to carry the trail sodas over when performing my structural calculations - thank you!

*note, also not an engineer, barely an electrician, mostly a smart ass.

I do dig the questionable XJ in question.

I'm here. Byron was the founder of the Muddevils. He's a straight up guy.
I forgot about you must not be memorable :flipoff2:

J/K - honestly hadnt seen you post in a while, which is probably as much my decreased involvement as much as anything

I would think removing the rear hatch, cutting the rear roof off, removing the doors etc would absolutely increase the foldability of the remaining structure. I would definitely add some minimal cage.

He's a great dude. An absolute character as well.

Anyone who has every wheeled an XJ without a cage or frame stiffeners knows the doors and hatch are harder to open and close when the suspension is flexed

XJ unibody's are not rigid at all
but they bend back :)
