Burrellsjeep Project: Eugene

Truss

Well I got some work done on the front axle today, I got the track bar mount burned in, and the Truss cut and the front side of it welded on before I ran out of time.
I cut it with a saw sall and cut off wheel on my grinder, Man what a chore that was. But I got it done, I notched it around the track bar mount in order to help brace it to the axle, I am also going to add a gusset between the track bar mount and the truss, That should lock it all together.
I know my welds ain't purdy, I will clean them up

Lower Front Link Mounts

I trying to decide on what to do for my lower link brackets in the front, I want to place them as close to the front of the skid as possible.

So should I just build some? If so what have you guys done?

Or should i just buy some?

I looking at using these from Ruff Stuff

Suggestions

keep up the good work man....I live pretty close. I'd like to come check the jeep out some time

Here is a mock up of how I doing the lower links, Links will be around 34 inches, I will get an exact measurement when there welded up

I used a scrap piece of DOM to show what I am doing.

I am going to weld the Ballistic Joint the tube and Tap the other end for the Crawler Joint.

I am so glad I decided to use the flex joints

Steering, Track Bar, and Truss Completed

Well I was able to finish the truss today. That completes the front steering. All thats left for the front is the 3 link.

Next I will start on the links for the front.

I am going to drive it tomorrow and see how it handles, Hasn't moved in 6 months. I will be nice to just drive it again.

Well it drove pretty good, The steering feels very precise and quick.

I moved my rear axle back a inch or so with some short arms I built a while back for the front the fix a caster issue. Well I now have the factory rears on the front until I get my front arms built. While doing a getto flex test on a mound of dirt at my shop I realize the rear tire are getting into the bumper "wrap a rounds". I got the bumper off a CJ we have.

So I took the sawall to it and solved that issue. This is just a temp fix so I can wheel it at a local spot Sunday. I building a rear fold down carrier.

Well I took it out this weekend and hit some trails, Had a great time meet some guys up at a local OHV, Fairly easy trails but I wanted to take it easy first time out.

I really need to get the short arms off the front there killing the ride on the road and trail.

Hopefully I will get my brackets this week so i can start that this weekend. Talked to Dan at Ruff Stuff he said the brackets were out of stock (not like Ruff Stuff) but he should be able to ship on Friday or Monday.

Question

What are you guys feeling on separation at the frame on upper and lower link mounts? I know I will have to put it where I can.

Just wanted to know if I should try to place them with more or less separation?

This is a Front 3 link, with a Track bar ,2 lowers, One upper on driver side off the top of the diff, about 8 1/2 inches of separation at the axle.

looks great! little overkill on the steering but that never hurts. id probably suggest the crawler joint on the frame side of the upper link and whatever u use in place of the rubber bushing needs a 5/8 or larger bolt hole that little 3/8 bolt that the d30 upper mount has just wont cut it. the upper needs to be just as strong on a 3 link as the lowers u dont want to have a problem with that it can make u have a real bad day real fast. as for separation you cant really get to much on the frame side in a tj so just get it to the top of the frame and make it longer than your lowers if possible.
jerry just called and told me that you guys had a great time over the weekend i wish i could have come down but i needed a non jeep day with the wife.

Wish I could have made it to brown on Sunday. Sure it was fun.

And not to sound like a dick...but you sure are throwing a lot of time and money at a really weak axle. Not just in the R&P and shafts, but knuckles, brakes, balljoints, and unit bearings. If you're building a new suspension, it would be the perfect time to replace it.

Correct me If I wrong,

But my thinking is I build the 3 link and when the time comes I just mount the brackets on the new axle like the D30 and reuse the same links.

I am was looking for a HP30, Would be brackets not be close to the same.

i take that back it is possible to have to much frame separation on a short jeep. to much will make the springs unseat if u are climbing the waterfall callalantee but a suck down winch will fix that. i found out from:driver: experience

Thanks,

I will consider that,

I was looking to try and get 6 inches at the frame not sure I can, and make the links the same length.

The upper link at the axle has a 7/16 bolt and the largest I can find is a Summit joint that takes to a 1/2 bolt.

You could do that, but cutting the old brackets off/cleaning up an axle then welding new ones on sucks as it is...no need in doing it twice. And what I was getting at is there are a couple HP44/ ford 9" sets for sale currently. You certainly save money in the long run replacing less balljoints/unit bearings/etc. as well as have much stronger axles...
