2002 TuRD

Love the truck man. What's the width difference front to back? The 60 series are only 58-59"ish right, and the rear is like 62-63? Were you able to get some extra width on the front when you did the flip?

Thanks!

It has Toyota IFS hubs on it, so those give I think 3" extra total width up front. So I'm probably within an inch of the rear width.

looks like 22.75 from front bolt hole to center pin
Turns out those are XJ leafs, they will require all kinds of work to get to fit that I don't feel like doing. Adding them to the scrap /I may run them someday in something pile.

These did arrive, new 0 lift rear fj62 leafs that I paid way too much $$$ for. Hopefully Ill have my pile back on the road this weekend!

I picked up this new style u bolt plate, going to mount my air bump pads off them. I always hated how I set mine up, such a PITA if I ever had to access the u bolt nuts.

Took this POS apart tonight to see what happened with the leaf:

Found the problem!!
IMG_20211126_204513507.jpg

Been broke for a while
IMG_20211126_210440186.jpg

Waiting on bushings then I should be back driving it by the end of next week at the pace I work at LOL!! I need to fix my air bump pads as I hated where they landed on the u bolt plate and do a brake job.

Doing a brake job and found a caliper that was fucked so after ordering parts I was laying under the truck and was wondering why my leafs weren't straight on the front driver side. I was banging away on the bottom leafs and noticed my main leaf was u shaped. Well fawk the damn main leaf cracked, I don't know if it was that last Harlan trip, windrock before it, or both. The shitty part is my dumb ass used some of the hardest springs to find stock, the damn fj62 rear springs. There has to be a jeep spring or something out there close...

Look up by the plate

So looks like it will be going under the knife sooner than I thought!

Good thing I caught that as I have been driving this thing to work all week and was planning on going wheeling a few times if any trips popped up.

Let me look, I may have a set of FJ60 rear springs that I haven’t bastardized.

Back on all 4s. These springs are nice and flat like the old ones, no Carolina squat! Building air bumps pads next weekend.

Finally got some time in the garage to work on this thing to prep for a trip to the ranch and AOP in March.

First things first, fix my gas tank mount that was ripping off the frame.
IMG_20220227_122205156.jpg

Then welded a plate over it
IMG_20220227_132228703.jpg

After that I fixed where I bent my frame at Harlan with some angle iron and patched up some rust holes on the pax side.

Then onto my hell project of building my driver's side air bump pad. I was seriously ready to cut the front suspension off today and move the whole axle forward, but cooler heads prevailed. This was my final.solution:
Leaf spring mount, cut in "half" and welded onto the spring plate
IMG_20220227_164003964.jpg

Next half welded on
IMG_20220227_164020557.jpg

Finally welded a plate over it for the pad.
IMG_20220227_172140727.jpg

I was real close to cutting my front suspension off and pushing everything forward. What a crap day in the garage laying on my back getting covered in rust dust, melting frame under coating and welding slag. I found a few more rust holes that needed patching. The good part is I'm just about ready to hit the trails again! The next project will be to move the battery out of the engine bay as the fender is caving in on itself.

Finished my bump pad
IMG_20220306_124044768.jpg

Pulled it out of the garage and threw a level on the bed for the hell of it, my driveway must be unlevel or something LOL

Changed the fluid on my crawl box/tcase and I am now ready for the Ranch next weekend!!

Broke 15ft into the first trail of the day on the first obstacle at the ranch. I didn't have a spare front driveshaft so that sidelined me to riding bitch and drinking a ton of beers, but I will be back for sure! Need to get a shaft made before the end of the month for an AOP ride.

Sounds like you need to carry a square tube spare. Can fit front or rear.

Yea true, I have a spare rear to get me home. Long term I'll just buy and extra front shaft and get it re tubed and use that.

No trailer so a square rear would bring teh suck.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip to the ranch. Too bad you had to get dragged out by an xj lol.

Lol!!! Yea man it was fun, thanks for letting me ride along and talk crap!

I thought about that later. That new bed cage should be able to hold all kinds of spares, haha.

Hahaha I think the stock beds going back on!! I need to get the truck to stop breaking evrey trip first before I start frame swaps or replacing frame rail sections.

Finished up my battery relocation today and swapped in the repaired driveshaft and I'm ready for AOP on Wednesday!

I used Carolina powertrain in Hickory to fix the shaft for me on the recommendation of @paradisePWoffrd . Good people and got it done quick and they reused all the Toyota parts which is nice. Usually shops lop off the Toyota ends and stick a Chevy yoke on there with a funky conversion joint. I'll get a beefier shaft built soon, I just need this together ASAP and couldn't make it out to Oliver's.

Battery relocation done, wireing shit show:

Hopefully I last more than 10mins and don't prematurely bust on the trail, story of my life! :D

AOP was a blast as usual. I didn't break anything but almost everyone else in the group did. Fingers crossed I excised the demons out of this truck!!

No idea how I didn't take out the extended cab window:

Always the sign of a good day of wheeling when you need to use the winch rope that you had to cut because your winch jammed under tension, to hold your door shut that the tree you were stuck on fucked up.

Always an awesome time at AOP!

Next up on the project list is to assemble the fj80 parking brake so I can get this pile of rust and dents inspected next month.

Those ext cab windows are unbreakable, tested that theory more than once on my old truck.

Just remember to keep you windows rolled down, better for them to bust in the door rather than on you. Luckily I never killed one.
Interesting, I always leave them up if I'm going to lean the door into something incase I dent the hell out of the mid to bottom of the door, at least the window would stay intact. Now you got me thinking...

Cleaned up my hack battery cables on my in bed battery setup:

Marine terminals FTW

I also ordered up a Bun Trail welder setup to replace my jumper cables and welding rods that I carry with me now. Don't know if it will be here in time for the next trip, but can't wait to get my hands on it and hopefully not have to use it.

Finally entering the 21st century and getting some decent comms in the truck, installing a GMRS radio. The CB has always been shit in this truck and barely worked on the yj I had before this, so hopefully this will be more reliable and I won't have to borrow handhelds from people on trail rides. Added bonus I won't have a stupid bro whip antenna.

It fit perfectly under my cupholders:

Don't know if I'm going to stick with the ghost "poop" antenna or the rugged radio one I got. I'll test it on the trail and see.

I'm sure all the antenna experts will crap themselves either way with having them behind and mounted so close to the cab, but I didn't want to rip them off on a branch or get in the way loading/unloading the bed as I still do truck things with my wheeler.

Mic will get stuck to the console itself as I have enough cords and shit hanging off my dash and getting tangled in my shifters:

Set out to tinker around in the garage today, you know grease some wheel bearings, driveshafts things like that, well that went sideways. Found this:
IMG_20220821_144415944_HDR.jpg

For those of you not familiar with Toyotas that's the frame rail above the drivers side rear leaf spring, forward eye. So I spent my day fixing that. I have one or two more trips planned in the fall, then I'm cutting the back of the truck off. I'm done patching holes and cracks. I heard a pretty loud pop on pinball at Harlan, I wonder if that was this cracking.
