Ok so started on this 4x6 trailer and was gonna do just a hub swap leave it solid axle and new tires but after seeing frame was 1/4” and still in great rusty shape I decided to make a trail/utility/camp trailer on a cheap 2000lb square tube axle/1350lb hubs on xj steelies and goal is 33” tires.

As I brought it home minus the 46” axle under neath and 2 piece aluminum wheels! The tongue was roughly 30” to start with!

I cut out all the rusted solid axle parts and have started making risers for the leaf spring hangers, simply bc the frame is 1”ish lower than I was wanting with leafs the solid axle mount was 2-3” taller so cog is down where I want it with risers still a lot of grinding to do!

Using the cross beams as gusset sorta curious if I need to add another support or box the riser on inside

@CasterTroy thank you! Looking back over his trailer build I noticed how he dealt with the on road and off-road tongue issue which answers a question I was already looking into having to solve! This is gonna be a low budget trailer build for beating up on doing yard work and camping, bc you can never fit enough stuff in a burb!! Lmao it may get a removable cage and sides for when really going camping up on the mtns!

Yeah would be cool building a 5x8 with rooftop tent for big guys that has a platform that folds up.... Make pullout racks for grills, workbench, vice... maybe next project  this is the only thing I’ve got going on besides the old burb this trailer almost ended up as scrap for floor supports in it but seen it’s true potential for work! I’m ready for the damn trail before they admit me to a crazy house...

Other side grinded and leveled up!

Solution for sketchy risers... makes me feel safer already! I’ll probably be selling this thing cheap after I finish it bc now I want to build another one with a diff axle and setup!

So whatcha thinking on the next one?
Not Sure yet completely... I’m considering one with storage area like yours but half the height and frame rails above that for storage, also a folding upper platform to just set a normal 8 person tent on and add steps as part of the railing... I’m tall so tent size matters but want it set up so I can cart a generator inside enclosed section, air compressor and everything else you need for whatever’s thrown at ya! probably a 6x8 or 5x8! It’ll be a winter project for me to get through the snow days lol

I’m gonna end up spending more on grinder/flap disks then this damn trailers worth lmao

@obullfish
Curious, have you got a build thread for your trailer? Pics of any kind?

I’m tall also so I have a REI tent that I can stand up in setup on the ground. Screw a roof top tent IMO as it is a long way to the ground in the middle of the night.
This is true, I thought that myself falling from 6’ at night would suck pretty bad. I may use the fold out top as a canopy or cover for a tent and table or such!? Who knows may just buy a military trailer and put a lid on it lol

Alright we’ll i gotta say it been fun setting up the axle and shackle angles making sure all is square and safe, Ive enjoyed it! Suspension is done and hangers burnt in! Changing routes on the wheel selection bc xj wheels are just too wide for this axle width even tho they clear... Wagon wheel and maybe a 31x10.50 tire still on the fence I used 2000lb springs just so it can hold the solid 2k axle weight!!

Still need 3x3 square tube to make the tongue, non adjustable on this one tho just straight bar with some triangulation! May add wood sides on this that are removable before it’s sold. I haven’t decided tho def going wood deck haven’t decided on barn door style back or drop tailgate style the rails will be roughly 13-15” high out of angle maybe small square!

Shackle angle to much, anyone got a opinion?? I measured that bitch 10 times lol still a lot of grinding to do, I’ll not know how to act when building another one with new metal...

Well decided to just weld old tongue back on paint it and say fuck it, but then deep down my heart wouldn’t let it stay that way... smdh so tongue cut back off again! 2.5x2.5 11gauge square tongue 4’5” and may end up adjustable!

Ehhh not to shabby I don’t reckon! Paint will cover it anyway... tongues welded in I added 4 tie downs with angle iron on the sides! I’ve got 16’ of 1.5” square tube but not sure if it’s gonna be used or not! May do angle for rail too it’s cheaper an use square for my truck seat mounts!

Looks good.

Just a thought...
Built a 10'x8' deck over trailer while back.
Made rub rail pockets and welded on a rub rail.
Pockets an rub rails Really comes in hand when strapping stuff down.
Just be sure to make the pockets a stand away far enough from the sides to get the hooks of your straps through.

I’ve got 16’ of 1.5” square tube but not sure if it’s gonna be used or not!

Make top rails for the sides, like a landscape trailer. It makes the trailer a hell of a lot stiffer.
