Figured it was about time I made a build thread for my rig. Current set is a 88 YJ, stretched front and rear on XJ springs, Chevy 44 with Ford hubs and rotors, Ford 9" rear, 232 I6, AX-15 and a dana 300. After breaking the 44 front, again, and riding with Paul Poplin at The Flats this past weekend, I've decided to take the 406 SBC from my drag truck and put it my Jeep. Going to run a GM 60 front with 35 spline outers I already have, 14 bolt FF rear 5.38's locked on both ends. Trans will either be a 350 or 400 with a 205 t-case with a completely flat belly skid. Going to keep the leaf springs for now with a custom made shackle reversal in the front and stretch the rear a few more inches with a anti-wrap bar. Goin the keep the 39.5's I have for now will the long term plan to run something in the 44-42 range. Will be a slow build using as much junkyard and used parts as I can hunt down to keep the cost down. The plan is to have it done for next Flats open ride in April.

You'll like that set up much better. I got a C&C 14 BFF if you're interested ;) . Same kind that's in my small Jeep.

I must be a bad influence on people.
Needs more motor Chris, JK!

I have about the same parts hoarded up for my build, just a little less motor. just havent the time to turn the wrenches on it

Ive been told the same thing so I'll forgive ya. Really reminded me how much I loved having a built V8 in my toys. I think you're right about the motor. Current motor specs are:

509 casting 2 bolt 2 freeze plug block
ARP main studs
Windage tray with mildon knock off 7 quart baffled oil pan
Melling High volume oil pump
Pro Comp 210cc intake runner, 64cc combustion chamber angle plug heads that have been ported and gasket matched to fel-pro 1206
Ferria 2.02/1.60 valves
Isky springs
Comp Cams retainer and locks
ARP rocker studs
1.6 stainless full roller rockers
5/16 Comp Cams magumn pushrods
Comp Cams 292 Magumn cam installed on the 106* I/C
Comp Cams double roller timing chain
ported Edelbrock Victor Jr intake
750 Barry Grant double pumper
Billet Hei with 50,000 volt and MSD 6-AL box with a two step rev limter
Electric fuel and water pump

The rotating assembly is a little scary, cracked my good short block when I was drag racing and threw this in to finish out the season. Cast .030 over dished pistons, stock 400 rods with mildon bolts, cast crank. Plan is to upgrade to forged flat top pistons, some Scat 5.7 rods with ARP cap screws, and a forged crank. Compression Ratio right now is roughly in the 8.5:1 range, way too low for the cam. With a set of flat tops, should be around 10:1. Would go more but want to get it pump gas friendly. Also plan to change the carb out to a 850ish vaccumn secondary Holley, the double pumper sucks for anything other than idle and full throttle.

I think you should seriously consider going with propane or a junkyard TBI setup. A TBI setup from a 454 maybe? I will never wheel with a carb again after having EFI.

You could easily do 11.5:1 and be alright on 93 octane, but 10 or 10.5 would be much better than 8.5 anyway lol. That'll be a fun motor in a YJ! A buddy of mine has a nicely built 400 in a CJ and it's kinda scary, just how I like it!

I have a 454 tbi setup that i would part with if your interested. Shoot me a PM if interested.

I agree with ya paul....its all fun...backup 3 feet n hit it!!!!...hahaha

I see you know my driving style. lol.

I've wheeled this rig carbed ever since I got it so very fimlair with the ups and down of a carb on the trail. Got a few tricks up my sleeve for a Holley that should make it very livable. Long term plan is propane. Never have been a fan of fuel injection, too much crap that could go wrong.

Order the first small part of the puzzle today, 14 bolt axle swap kit!

Anybody have a GM 60 housing layin around, current housing is trussed to hell and set up for a link. Would be a LOT of cutting to go back to leaves.

I'd trade that one for a factory one. I'm sure you could find someone to swap you.

I was looking at that axle when it was posted, but was at ure. so I think he got your txt before he got my pm. let me knw on the axle. maybe we can work something out

Would like to keep the housing for when I go to links in the furture, I'll see what happens.

When you describe your plans for the keep I can't help but think of when the coyote straps a rocket to his back to catch the road runner lol :driver:

Lol, something like that, I might have been watching one too many rock bouncer videos. Figured why not combine the best of both my hobbies into one. lol.

I called him right after he posted it, got lucky. Was a hell of a deal. PM what you have in mind.

Did some horse trading with a buddy last night and picked this up. 14 bolt with disc brakes, 1410 pinion yoke, Barnes4wd pinion gaurd, shave diff cover, and truss. Truss will be up for sale if any one needs it.

Also got luck and caught the Barnes4wd 14 bolt axle swap kit for sale on the deal of the day! And have U-bolts and plates for the front thanks to Guffey24. Will be ordering gears for the rear in the next few days. If things go according to plan, should have it sitting on the new axles and suspension in the 2-3 weeks!

Nice score on the 14 bolt beefy diff cover too!

Figure about time for an update. After having no luck finding a bare 60 housing, ended up picking up another Dana 60 with 35 spline outers and flanges and no gears from Lurch830. Going to take the gears outta the trussed 60 and put it in the non-trussed 60. Also picked up a brand new 39.5 TSl from RedRoller. Picked up a 78 k-10 with a 350/350/203 in it. Going to keep the trans and t-case and part out the rest. Serously thinking about running a 203/205 doubler. A little more than I wanted to spend but I think it'll make this rig be able to crawl 1/2 decent with the high stall convertor. Trying to figure out a way to have my cake and eat it to.

You'll be happy with a 203/205 combo. Takes away from your rear driveshaft length and adds to the front, but an over all great set up.

X2. As you've probly heard already, make sure you run a huge trans cooler, probly with its own fan. That high stall converter will build alot of heat

You're about the 100th guy to say that. lol. No harm. Picked up a NIB factory trans cooler from a new model power stroke. Things probably 15"x24". Gonna hang it from the cage with its own fan. Think that'll do the job.
