Am I being a Dumbass?

I'm sure it's been said here already plenty but I've just got to say, having made that drive several times-- there's no fuckin way I would ever consider driving that far just to pick something up. Not only does that drive suck but this is just like building something where in your head you think you'll save money but in the end you spent twice as much and wasted your own time.
Find some ltl carrier or hot shot driver, pay them the $1500, move on.

There is something you are not thinking about is the tail weight it will put on your truck with the overhang. You said weighs around 1000 or a little more your truck will handle the weight but when you have 6 plus feet hanging over the back the weight will cause you to be light in the front and you will get a lot of tail swing. Get a couple of your buddie to stand on the back of your canoe thing and look at how the truck does. I have a towing business and I deal with weight all the time.

I’m picking up what you’re putting down, but the nose of that chassis is tube. I’m guessing here, but there probably isn’t 200 pounds total extended out past my tailgate. I’d be surprised to see my truck sitting level. I’m very confident it won’t squat.

I’d be surprised if you couldn’t find cheaper shipping than what you stated. I’m not going to say I wouldn’t do it but my time is worth a lot to me. If it were me, I’d exhaust myself looking into shipping options before I made that drive out and back without some serious fun/experiences along the way.

Having driven many long drives as such with and without an aux tank. I would have a hard time stopping for fuel every 4hrs or so. Yes you still have to use the bathroom but pulling in and out of a rest area is much quicker than getting off the interstate.

If you are going to do it I’d go with a single axle trailer. Just my .02

meh...there wont be a significant amount of weight behind the axle, with or without the canoe apparatus. Something no one has considered; the entirety of the weight felt from the truck will be equal to the footprint of what is actually touching the truck and any leverage seen from the overhang past the footprint of said area; that footprint is the subframe of the chassis!- roughly 3'x3' square... now if the rock rails were the supporting references of the chassis to the bed that area would be approximately be 5'x5' , therefore reducing the lbs/sqft. Even if the entirety of that footprint lands behind axle centerline, still not enough weight to upset the trucks chassis, IMHO. Chassis will come in under 1000lbs. i suspect there will be less than 700 behind the axle centerline either way. That's less than the tongue weight of any loaded tag trailer he has pulled, with negligible squat.

I believe this horse has been subdued.

So if we’re gonna do this thread any justice, it’s only right to toss some money at it. Do it real classy, pick the state a problem occurs. Double down on destination or return trip. Parlay that into problem that occurs...ya know, lost load, blown tire, engine trouble, etc etc. Biggest odds on a problem free trip.

I’m assuming I can’t play because I’d guarantee myself a win?

Id drive out,see sights, enjoy foreign places ( outside my rock), and still pay to have that thing shipped.

There I said what I meant to earlier.

Absolute luckiest thing I can think to happen in my negative Nancy list......

Pull in someplace to eat, crash, nap, sleep. Wake up and said chassis is MIA.

Talk about a bummer....and to think reputable shippers have insurance for that.

How close is the back end gonna come to the cab? It may have been covered earlier in the thread but I didn't see. Any way to angle your pallet mounting surface so either the front or rear clears?

I’ve played this game a time or two. There’s ways to slow down a thief. The fact that it’s heavy and immobile is one thing. My Dad takes security to a whole nother level when it comes to locks and chains. I’ll use multiple. Backed into a parking spot almost touching the hotel. That parking spot directly below my room. I travel armed. Just a few of my precautions.

It’s really up to me on how close. I’m probably comfortable with 4-6”. That’s what she said!

Are you sleeping in the truck......you realize they'll just take the whole enchilada! Plenty of enclosed, trucks, trailers, been stole while honest folks rest a bit.
I had buddies I raced with lose everything they had. Chained to the post right next to the hotel room. Truck, trailer, tools, and bikes.
Me after running as hard as you intend, not even King Kong would wake me up.

Drive out empty, buy a 6x10 trailer from Lowe’s, haul back, sell the trailer for what you bought it for. Plus is if you can find something to haul out and something to haul back in the bed for fuel$$.

Imagine a road trip.......

For 5 days.
How many seats are in your truck?

My head just exploded pondering this train wreck...
You are crazy and that would be a good time.

I have 3 suggestions, 2 are serious, I'll let you decide which 2.
1. Turn it sideways. It's only 55" wide, and your bed is 6.5 feet long. 12.5ft isn't that wide compared to some of the things I've seen on the road. Slap a wide load sign on the front and back and send it!

2. My dad has a ladder rack that used to be on his truck. You could probably borrow it for free or buy it really cheap. If you have a way to get it up there, that would solve 94% of your issues.

3. Put my Jeep on your trailer. Take it to Moab, hammers, etc. Load chassis on trailer with my Jeep. Stop at a couple more wheeling spots on the way back. All problems solved, adventure level increased.

I hope the first one is your joking one. A 12.5' wide load would be a no go for sure.

You could have it finished out there, fly out and drive it home, hitting all wheeling destinations on the way back. Win win.

Personally, and seriously, I'd buy a cheap single axle trailer out there and sell it when I got back. But more likely I'd do something like you intend in the original post, why? Because they all said to not to and they're wrong because I'm always right. =)

If I end up driving solo, then yes, I’d most likely crash in the back seat on a full blown bed mattress. My family thinks somebody has to go with me, but I’m having a hard time convincing them that they’ll only slow me down. That’s where lil sis comes in. Either way, if somebody steals the whole thing, the majority is insured. I’d get another truck, probably a flatbed, that way next time I do this, it won’t be on a plywood box. All I can do is try. Can’t sit at home and worry about the what if’s.

1. NOPE o_O
2. That ladder rack probably won’t fit my RamBox bed.
3. Ain’t no way I can do all that in 7 days, but I’ll make you an offer. After the buggy is done, I’ll load it and your Jeep on my big ass trailer. We’ll take them both back across the country and hit all those wheeling spots.

I say go for it.
But, don’t be so hard headed that if it isn’t working you don’t try and prove it to us it would work.
The small trailer from Lowe’s isn’t a bad idea.

What's the return policy for a trailer from Lowe's? Buy one out there, drive it home, return it to local store? Personally I wouldn't do that because it's dishonest, but a Craigslist trailer is fair game.
