I just have to say it here...

We were at Uwharrie this past weekend. I don't think I've ever seen as many beer cans on the trail, especially along Dickey Bell. And most all of them were Bud Lights. What's up with that? A few other brands, very few soft drink cans and bottles.

I picked up a bunch at different stops, but it was just a drop in the old bucket.

I just wish there was something we could do to discourage this. Short of picking up other people's trash. :( Grrrrrrr.

And ATV's. Dont' get me started on them. Grrrrrrr.

EDIT: I put this in general instead of trail issues because it'll probably go south real fast.

Oh, also didn't see a ranger all weekend. :( Seems they could pay a ranger's salary by writing $250 tickets all weekend.

I would not be opposed to cooler checks -- 99.9% of was beer cans. Fine'em $250 for possession.

Almost all the ATV'ers had helmets on, though. Heard they really cracked down on that earlier this spring and got the word out. Only saw a couple without.

People leaving trash has ruined some good fishing spots for me...
There is one spot at an old power station that was a real honey hole, is now littered with trash. I promise you could fill 30 large trash bags full of garbage.

I live in a dead end neighborhood with a private Lake. My road wraps around the lake and on the low end is were people come to access the lake to fish. I am constantly stopping to pick up trash that people just toss on the ground instead of throwing in their cars or trucks and taking with them. don't see much if any trash along the lake, only where they park their cars...

It is not just the National Forest or the Lakes.. it is everywhere..

and I honestly believe it is due to the way people were raised or their surroundings.. they watch there parents/relatives throw trash, cigarettes, etc out the car window, on the ground when walking, etc..

and no one has ever told them that is not allowed..

I have actually pulled at stop lights next to people and yelled at them for dumping there ash tray on the ground at the light before.. that is just ridiculous..

This is another reason CNC4x4.org has adopted Slab pile and other clubs have adopted other trails.. because we want to see Uwharrie and other places stay open and if we did not help I can only imagine how bad the trails would be..
as you can tell litter just pissed me off.

I think DUI check points on the trails would be great. Unmarked vehicles for the rangers to make the crack down. Repeat offenders lose their rides especially for the drinking issue.

this has given me an idea---one of those pistol crossbows with a fishing reel mounted & a quick attach thingy made up to attach the arrows to the fishing line hmm this would make getting the trash up more fun at least

I picked up 2 bags the last time I was there just to have a decent place to camp--never mind the white leaves with brown stains in the woods--bring it in bring it out!

they do checkpoints at ure also, i'm not sure how frequently though. i went through one last year and one maybe three years ago. both late at night, midnight or so probably.

Wonder when the last time an intoxicated driver fell asleep rock-crawling and crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with a minivan and killing a family of four...

When are all you nannypants crybabies going to get over being victimized every time anybody does anything you don't like? The fact is litter has never made you break an axle or lose traction or puncture a tire. It's a visual distraction, provided by losers who litter whether they are drunk or sober, and just happen to be bigger losers when they're drunk, but that doesn't mean you need to call the law on everybody and set up checkpoints and random, unprovoked cooler searches. Pick up some trash and smack some sense into anybody you see being a jerk but please jesus quit looking to the government every time somebody bothers you.

Trail cleanup is good PR. If nobody ever littered or messed up the trail or acted like jerks and everything stayed clean and neat and well-maintained, you think the eco-zombies would leave us alone and stop trying to close things down? Negative.

So what you're saying is, we need to let people keep littering and being asshats and sstop complaining about it, maybe even encourage it, so that we can look good by wasting our time coming behind them to clean it up?

Wow, what a good point.
I have about 4 cans of trash leftover from some house renovation sitting in my basemnt that I need to dispose of. Maybe I'll make a run down to URE and dump in in the trail. Let mek now when you're going down there next so you can look liek a real hero by cleaning it up.

The trash sucks but I think the other point of drinking and driving was nearly lost. Pack out what you pack in and leave the drinking for the campfire. You're not just putting yourself at risk when you drink, you're endangering the people around you.

That's actually exactly not what I said. I said you need to smack some sense into anybody you see being a dipshit litterbug on the trail. I said you need to stop looking to the government for a solution to any problem that bothers you. I said that calling the law in to randomly search people and hassle people because you're bugged by some litter is a lazy, petty way of dealing with your problems. I said that the opponents of this hobby of ours would not be appeased if nobody ever abused trails, and that making a personal effort to clean up some garbage is an obvious, simple, responsible way to look good for the sport of wheeling.

Not lately. But on the other hand, when was the last time you saw a couple of jerk offs thrashing an S-10 up by Kodak Rock and nearly running over a couple of kids? That happened the last time I was are URE. When I say they almost ran over the kids, I mean that one of them would definitely have been hit if someone in the crowd hadn't literally grabbed him and drug him out of the way at the last second. At first I thought they were just morons, but then when I got down there I realized that they were both drunk off of their asses. A bunch of people started giving them crap and they drove away.

Why does the government need to enforce the rules? Because you and I don't have the authority to do it. All I can do is give somebody a rash of crap, but these guys deserved to get a DUI and vehicle impound. Please tell me how I, not being a cop, can accomplish that without the government's help. Hard heads are going to be hard heads, and the only thing they're going to respond to is law enforcement.

Maybe we should ask the police to post men at every obstacle to make sure parents are keeping their kids from standing in unsafe places.

While they're there they can give us all sobriety tests and check our coolers and make sure our turn signals work and take turns pissing in our cereal.

*stir stir* Obviously the kind of people that drink that pisswater would be the kind to litter... does it surprise you? I mean really, when's the last time you saw a microbrew bottle out on the trail?

And, the S-10 thing..it doesn't matter if the driver was drunk or not, kids should be damn near on a LEASH when you're around 4wd's and obstacles. the blind spot on my RF corner could easily hide a 5-year old snot-factory, and that's on level ground, forget about the nose being up in the air.

Kids are kids, you're the parents.. so parent! You had sex without a jimmy hat, you deal with the consequences for 18 years. If the S-10 was on the trail, it's the parent's fault. [end rant]
