Chippers…

Your going to be stuck with the small homeowner options then.

$2k Will get me a used PTO 6” unit. I know that will be more than enough for me.

But my thought is trying to find something that will handle 90% of what I need without tying up the tractor. A larger DK or DR or WoodMax or similar 4” chipper will probably be what I get for now.

Brush is piling up. I have 3 piles the size of a school bus that needs chipping and more to come. The wife and kids will be busy. :D And I really don’t want to pay and take the time to load in dump truck and haul away. Because that takes me and my time that I can be doing something more useful.

This is an inequality. You would be miles ahead to even just rent a 12" chipper for a day and get ahead of the backlog, then worry about maintaining as it comes in with a smaller machine.

Why is having an implement on the back of a tractor tying it up? It’s been years since I’ve done it but changing them isn’t that difficult or time consuming?

Agreed. My neighbor did this a while back - rented a great big new one; knocked out a huge pile in a couple of hours.

Chip Drop

Ive been on chip drop for a while. Most of the local tree companies dont have a website or FB page, they surely arent using it. Also, the local landfill lets them from brush, logs and chips for free, so paying to dump chips isnt going to happen. The only savior is if you are closer to them, than the landfill, and the homeowner doesnt want it.

The chipper needs the PTO to run. So you cant chip branches, and use the grapple to move logs at the same time. In a 1 man operation, it doesnt matter. He is planning to put the ladies to chipping, while he rides around on the tractor.

Around here it seems to work pretty well. I've never done it, but I know people who have. A week or so later an Asplundh truck disgorges itself onto their driveway.

It’s not really tying it up. But, if I’m chipping, I’m also using the tractor with grapple, so both activities can’t be done at the same time.

Also, I have a backhoe on the back of the tractor that I plan to keep on there most of the time. And, taking the BH off isn’t exactly an easy task. Not hard, but certainly not easy, and can be time consuming. It certainly isn’t as convenient as a 3pt hitch. I have a bush hog and box blade (and soon making a land plane) that I’ll use some but most of what I’ll use will be the grapple and BH. And if I’m using the grapple with trees, which will create brush to chip, I’ll need the BH on the back for ballast unless I get/make a ballast box. When (not if) I get stuck in the mud with the grapple, I’ll surely need the Bh to help get me out. It’s happened a few times already in this eastern NC swampy land.

Chip Drop

TY.

I signed up, I’ve looked and looked for a tree company up here to ask about chips and haven’t found a thing. I need to get compost going for years down the road.

You have to keep your foot on the pedal the whole time. On a geared tractor you just pick a gear, set it and forget it
Which is why even when I buy a new HST with loader, the International 424 ain’t going anywhere. I did that once for my uncle Gary, half a day and I was in agony. Cruise on a new tractor if available FTW.

The hst I borrowed from my buddy had cruise control

Now that you guys mentioned it, mine does too, I just never use it and forgot about it 😂 Maybe I should give it a try next time, sure would save my thigh muscles!

I have all but given up on a chipper at the moment and have been burning the debris for now. I don’t want to cheap out on something that isn’t efficient but I also don’t want to spend more than necessary for my little plot of land.

I’m keeping my eyes open but haven’t committed to anything. Actually, earlier this week I almost bought a PTO driven chipper for $500. It was older but mostly obsolete and hard to find parts for. And it was PTO, which I wanted to steer away from. I feel that I’m almost going to have to get a PTO chipper for what I want to do for the $ I want to spend.

A neighbor had been cutting and chipping 4 rows of bushes in his front yard for a week w a small vertical feed machine, I think he finally broke/wore it out yesterday.

o_Osplitting firewood w crocs on is a recipe for some injuries......
I'm sure you could say the same about letting your 6 year old run the valve on the splitter too, but he is extremely intuitive and conscientious, and I trust his judgement with it better than most adults I know. Also, you're welcome to try to convince him to wear something else. He's the only person I've met who is more stubborn than his mother ;)

I'm good with that too, I ran the splitter for my dad over 40 years ago when I was that age, he still has all his fingers. Not sure if they've added any saftey features since then. And I'm sure I was in shorts at times. Maybe flip flops.
