DD'd all my tow rigs in the past, sometimes would drive the rig when I lived in Boone but the current truck is a '16 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab and has the midget bed which is my only gripe otherwise its the perfect truck for what I need. I find a way to expense some of my mileage every month so I just drive the truck. It would actually handcuff me for work to DD a car.

When we get back to the farm there are a pair of V10 F450's at my disposal or a Kodiak if I'm feeling froggy so really needing to upgrade to a diesel when 90% of the time I'm hauling lumber, acrylic or an enclosed with dirtbike(s) in it isn't worth it to me to pony up for something with the brotax.

No way I'd consider DD my quadcab long bed truck. I know some do, but not me. I enjoy having a small car and being able to park where I want. I love my truck, but it doesn't move unless something needs to be hauled.

I drive my 7.3 excursion daily... I'm round trip 30 miles a day roughly. I am looking to purchase either a decent XJ or a Honda Civic or something shortly... but I just haven't found anything that jumped out at me.

I think it’s pretty telling how many people were once DD’ing a bigger truck and then switched to a smaller vehicle and loved it.

I recently picked up a cheap tow rig that is a CCLB Silverado. Drove it about 100 miles last week with some errands around town...Holy cow that think wont turn and feels like I'm going thru a parking lot in a limousine! I can't fathom DD'ing a truck of this size when there are so many options for smaller fuel efficent cars and pickups available. Maybe if I drove about 10 miles to work or something.

The only thing you can get away with under $1000 is just an oil change (if you're dumb enough to take it to a dealer for that) and then it's only $150

Guilty! I had an E46 M3 that Joe refused to service so I forked out $150 for oil change & wipers  Damn, I miss that car!

To the original topic - Joe DD'd our Ram 3500 mega cab until he rammed another Ram  We replaced it with a 2005 Tahoe for him to scoot around in & then snagged a cheap tow rig to pull the camper.

You know how Target has a cover charge of $100 min? (yeah I need to run to target for "x" but dang I ended up NEEDING abcdefgh.....)

Well, any BMW has a cover charge of $1000 when it needs repair o_O

Wheel speed sensor? $1000
Muffler bearing? $1000

Maybe if you pay the dealer, but my experience has been that parts are pretty reasonable. In 2 years I've replaced 3 parts. A boost pressure sensor that was around $75, and 2 rear wheel bearings to the tune of $45 each. Only 1 needed to be replaced, but I went ahead and did both. Oh, and tires. Been through a couple sets of tires :D:burnout:

This is REALLY not meant to sound elitist or snooty...because that's not the intent, but....how many BMW's have you owned?

MY experiences (5 cars, 2 motorcycles) span from a brand new cars/bikes to 18 yr old cars. And while, yes there are exceptions, the more common, oddball parts (wheel speed sensors, BMSK brains, etc where you HAVE to buy genuine BMW parts) tend to run +/-$1k

Having said that, I'd own that diesel in a heartbeat! While they ARE more expensive to own, few cars are as tight and bring more smiles per miles. The office Camry has 377k trouble free miles. Plugs/timing/water pump every 100k and oil every 5k nothing else, but it's just above riding a bus for driving experience.

I have my truck to tow our toyhauler, the wife has hers to tow the stock trailer and I have a project truck. I don’t plan to live here or have I planned to live anywhere I have been stationed so my issue is having another vehicle is just a pain in the ass when it comes to moving. I tried it when I lived at Bragg and had to sell off most of the fleet before I moved due to Uncle Sam being stingy with the funds to help relocate. Once we get settled I will invest in a little shitbox DD.

$150 aint bad...MB wants $450 for an oil change. $575 if they do a B service and fill p the washer bottle. They also void the warranty on the brake system if you dont flush the fluid at 30,000 miles to the tune of $2,400.

I told him to KMA on that one...

I have DD'd all my tow rigs at one point or another. 85 Dodge, then an 06 Mega Cab, the my current 93 Dodge. Commutes between 5 and 25 miles usually. Only reason I have quit DD'd the 93 now is because my commute is .7 miles and I don't want to crank and run a diesel for 2 minutes then shut it back off again. So I stole my parents 98 Buick instead lol.

And this is why we've never had a slow day in close to 30 years at my shop.

My dd is a tow rig f550 and I tow with it everyday. My 250 pulls the toys and might make a weekly run to the store.
