Gas shortage?

This thinking is what causes artificial shortages though, right?

Definitely part of the problem. My MIL texts me, my wife, and my SIL this morning telling me about the gas shortage and how they just filled up both of their cars and we should do the same. Im sure my SIL and BIL both went and filled up their cars.

And people doubt the very nature of a possible collapse in our nation due to a " perfect " storm senerio of events. We haven't seen any rioting or events of violence.....but think if it where only slightly worse. Pipe verses, say an entire Manufacturing grid, or much worse Power.

The scary truth is, right now it is just gas, no big thing. Now say if the power grid for a few cities went down for several days, an I mean total blackout, yes chaos would take flight. No power, no food, no usual habits and authorities handicapped...yeah that would spark a riotous firestorm.

Sad thing is, most people arent prepared for more than 72hrs in their home. I sit back and think of all the negative stigma towards preppers and kinda laugh. Funny how a dose of reality can turn tables so quickly.

Bingo.
If everybody would just chill the fuck out and sit and think for a minute - hey, it actually takes me a week or more to go through a tank of gas - or maybe just go get a few extra gallons - then it would just be a little bump.
What I find funny it everybody saying "the media hypes it up" but really, the media only did their job, warned there was going to be a minor shortage and a resulting price increase. I have yet to see a mainstream outlet say, "Go fill up all your tanks ASAP or you'll be fucked".

Meh, there are enough cats and squirrels in my neighborhood to last let me weeks. Then we have the dogs..

My work truck has about 3/4 of a 20 gallon tank.Im gonna be goin to the swap meet in Maggie valley on Fri so I went ahead and filled up the dually tryin to get ahead of any shortage later in the week.Tonyas Nissan needed gas anyway so I filled it up,just back and forth to work it will last her three weeks or so.Fuel around here is still $1.98 and reg unl is $1.99 as of this afternoon.

Think its a crock of shit honestly. With all this shit going on about the oil pipeline and the Native protests...
Ehhhhh. Call me a whackjob, but I always smell conspiracies. Media causes a panic, panic causes a shortage, shortage causes more panic.
Excellent distraction.

Yup. Remember when gas went crazy high here five or six years ago? Complete media bull crap and made a mess of the "system" for damn near a week. It would be more helpful if they just kept their damn mouths shut.

i got my new car ready for the shortage

Chattanooga fuel stations seemed busier than normal this weekend, but fuel could still be had for sub-$2 in plenty of places.

Sheetz at white oak and 70 were bagged this morning, I just laughed an thought about this thread.
The other thing people dont consider is the stores shut down to protect their equipment as well. We all know it is bad to run a pump dry, so they are doing the same thing. That one store pumps 130,000 gallons a month... So yeah I can see some stores temporarily shutting down with low resupply levels.

ain't a drop of gas to be had in my neck of the woods. as long as there is more by Thursday i'll go fine, can't coast to Dixie run.

In Smithfield just off 95, 2.12 gal

Yes fuel for our vehicles is important so is electric and natural gas but how about water? We can't go very long without flushing our toilets. We could go a little while without a shower. Cooking without water would get tough. Need drinking water all the time. Urban areas are on a system. Most of the homes out in the country have been hooked up to a water system. Are the abandoned wells being maintained? Tainted pipe systems could require alot of cleaning and flushing to be used again. I'm worried about the water.

Wife stopped to get gas this morning on her way to work. She called me and said the station was out of everything but premium and was 2.65 a gal.

That's not too bad considering I think it was 2.49 before all this crap started, but the fact that they were out of reg and mid grade is pretty concerning. I agree the media is hyping it up to be more of an issue than it is.

Lol.... I got 7 gallon of ethanol free if I need it though...

I remember back in high school (probably going on 13-15 years ago now), Salisbury and quite a few surrounding areas were out of power for 3 weeks from the ice storm. I don't recall any riots, but on a larger east coast scale...I could see it. I do remember many days hunting and plenty of fires though.

But that is a relatively rural area, esp in those days. Think of a large urban area. Those folks couldnt find a stick to burn, or light it for that matter. Chaos would insue.

Just filled up in Grover, NC since my Tundra was just below 1/4 tank. I have to go to Charlotte every day Tuesday - Sunday this week. Gotta be proactive and fill up my work vehicle before there isn't anything to fill it up with.

The gas stations are starting to get stoopid. Usually where I get gas in Grover, there are 5 stations within 1/4 mile. All are usually within $.01 of each other. This morning, Hickory Point was 1.99 and was backed up to the road. Hess only had premium. Mikes was 2.19. BP was 2.19. Exxon was 2.09. This is all just south of the border in SC.

All that investment in green energy is doing wonders right now isnt it. When was the last refinery built ...late 70's to early 80's I think but could be wrong.
Decided to look this up..

When was the last refinery built in the United States?
There were a total of 141 operable petroleum refineries in the United States as of January 1, 2016.
Two new refineries began operating in 2015. Petromax Refining Co began operating a 25,000 b/cd refinery in Houston in the second quarter. Buckeye Partners LP began operating a 46,250 b/cd condensate processing facility in Corpus Christi in the fourth quarter.
However, the newest refinery with significant downstream unit capacity began operating in 1977 in Garyville, Louisiana. That facility came online in 1977 with an initial atmospheric distillation unit capacity of 200,000 b/cd and as of January 1, 2016 had capacity of 539,000 b/cd.

I'm guessing he is thinking about the Feb 03 Ice Storm.
IIRC there were something like 300k residents of Mecklenburg County out of power for at least 3 days.

It was memorable to because at the time I was still servicing my home security accounts. We had about 1,500 accounts and did dealer work for one of the national players as well. We typically went through 30 batteries a week between new installs and service calls. We went through 2,100 in one month. People were crazy, the power was out, but they DEMANDED their security system stay on...even at the expense of $150 after hour service calls.

^^^Yeah...that was the one. And if I recall correctly, we had to bring in plows and road supplies from other states because NC had already used up their supply from a relatively active winter already.

Sheetz, shell, and citgo in youngsville are all out. The bp in downtown creedmoor is out and the citgo in creedmoor off 56 will be out later today according to the guy at the counter. Currently rationing gas at $10 per person and he was at $2.39.

There are stores in surry county that holding their reserve fuel for emergency service personnel and apparatus.

Meh.... Relax. a couple of million Flint, Michigan residents are handling that just fine..... :)

$10 limit is straight out ridiculous. Buying 4 gallons of gas at a time would be pointless. You'd burn a half a gallon just waiting in line. 10 gallon limit makes a little more sense.
