Why is there only 4 or 5 entries in the 4x4cross so far?

What is keeping you from registering yet?

Are you planning to register?

Are you planning to attend?

I plan to register very soon, hoprfully this week.
Only reason I have not yet is b/c I have a driveline/trans problem that needs working out. I want to be sure the vehicle can be driven 500 miles to get there April 11.
Even in worst case, I'm attending either way.

My hunch is there is aprehension from not knowing the course. Commiting w/o even seeing what you're driving on is brave. Last year everybody knew the course and the main obstacles.

But I'm feelin brave... :driver:

I will say I haven't entered because of the admission price. I know it is nothing for some people, but that makes for a damned expensive weekend for me. Other than that, I would love to race, course unseen or not.

There should be a video of the course up soon. Ricky and Lorenzo were out there Sunday driving the course w/ video camera.

IIRC, race entry price is the same as last year? And it includes the weekend pass.

I expect repairs/aftermath to be alot more expensive than the admission.

I can understand about the entry fees, but it should be a good time to at least come for the weekend to camp, hangout and have some fun while checking it out. Should not be a boring second for any spectators with lots going on.

Hint: i didn't race last year either.

I don't expect anything to change with these races( not this year at least), but I will say that I think something along the lines of $50 entry fee would actually get people excited about this thing, and open the door to a lot more competitors. Maybe not.

And in no way would i expect the cost of repairs to be more than the entry fee in my case. All my spares come from pull a part, so aside from my front locker, chassis, or engine, I could replace any number of other parts on my rig for less than the entry.

The entry fees are this high so the payouts will be high. The payouts are what is supposed to attract the competitors!

Either way, it should be fun to attend and watch.

Just don't take what I say as me trying to down the race and what y'all are doing. I'm glad there are people willing to put forth the effort to get an event like this going. And I guess you hit the nail on the head, as to why I am reluctant to spend on this. IF I entered the race, the purse would be the last thing on my mind. The fun of racing would be the first. but I can have a whole lot of fun for $150.

EDIT: Or maybe I am just a cheap bastard.

planning to be wheeling in PA that weekend :)

Hey Ken, if you go to Rausch Creek a week earlier instead you could catch the KOH regional comps... I may try and go

I am not racing but AM hoping my $25 ticket to fame will get me both a vehicle and someone nuts enough to drive it!! :)

I have already made my reservations for my campsite at Arrowhead and plan on buying a "weekend pass" for myself.

I will be in my tow rig / but I am hoping that they realize that walking a "country mile" from 109 to all the way behind the stables is insane.

To be honest, my wife is not coming this year after being made to walk that last year, so that is one less weekend pass sale. (We did manage to drive back the 2nd day to "play" on the rocks AND save her the walk)

[She had a stroke about 3 weeks after the race, we didn't know it was coming or why she was having troubles etc, and have a handicap sticker now for her but she just does not want to bother]

Now...why don't "I" race my rig? I think the biggest reason is I am NOT going to run it wide open / tear it up / and so I know I have zero chance of winning.

If / when / they come up with an event I could compete in (more technical / less "rock racing") I probably would! Not sure what that is but throwing it out there...

Final thought... this year I don't feel like buying and building a race rig that I don't mind tearing up. For 2010...I am seriously considering it / but have to get moved into a new home first where I have place to park all these toys!!

1) People were pumped for a new event last year AND the fact that it was on the trails at Uwharrie made it special. Same as going to Tellico or Moab, when you say you ran the race and totaled it on Kodak people know what you're talking about. When you say you totaled it behind Johnny's barn it kinda loses something!

2) My rig goes SLOW, not fast :) Personally I didn't care for the after race venue last year. Too much dirt, mud, walking, drunks, no seats, etc. The rocks course has little appeal for me and I'm not a mud guy.

3) No

4) Probably not (see #2). I don't even know what the spectator fee is but for me to come it would have to be in the $5-10 range. If it's $20+ I definately won't be there.

Nothing personal at all. Like Adam I applaud the effort Johnny and Ricky are putting into making something happen and I wish them success! It's just not my kind of event.

I want to race again this year. Especially as well as i did last year, but times is hard and the funds are not there this time. Im hoping to be there watching.

There is not alot of mud, or rocks in the course this year. There will be some, but not alot of either. You guys will see when the video is posted, what the track is about. There wil be some cool obstacles. The course is being designed to be a slower course, if ya drive it to finish. The same as last year, in alot of ways, only on a farm this year. You will just have to see it. It's cool.

I dont think the beer will be sold this year. Not sure. But i dont think so.

It will be alot more spectator friendly this year.ALOT

i hope ricky doesnt get discouraged if turn out is low this year. it takes time for these things to catch on.

also...i didnt know about the track no being on the trails. i can see that taking away from the event.

Also this year, the economy is TRASHED. Tons of people have been laid off, or are nervous about getting laid off.
We turned down the two big expenses we were planning on this year because of uncertainty around my job. (home improvements, and a truck for me)

I know it's much worse for lots of my friends right now.

Yes, but where it's at now, I can see it adding so much to the event. It's not just a romp through a field, It's a purpous designed track that is very exciting and spectator friendly too. It is not an all jumps like motorcross track either. Lots of thought has been put into it.

if you need someone to hold down shotgun and split gas $ lemme know, i wouldnt mind goin this year.

This is an interesting point.
I completely see the reason for the cost, sure you need to have trophy $$, and of course it's a private venture so the owners need to make $$.
But for the sake of future years, I'd advocate a poll of folks to see what the entry fee/payout tradeoff is for most folks.
Honestly I'd do it for a cheesy ass trophy, a handshake and a beer.
I intend to donate my winnings :driver: to my charity anyway (more on that soon).

That's a tough one really - on one hand, high purse might attract the interest of more folks, at least the guys who are serious about the sport, but at the same time cheap entry allows alot more "average Joes" to run

I will be entering if I can get the jeep I'm looking at and get a cage in it.
Like everyone else has said I feel the biggest problems are the economy and the unknown course. With it being at URE last year people knew what it was and could prepare for it. Since its at the stables they don't know what its all about. It would be like paying for a roller coaster ride when you know nothing about it.
Hopefully that fear will be gone after the video and the pre-run.
I think this years race will be better for everyone. It will be a more controlled race and better for people watching.
Since the race has moved to the stables everything will be there for everyone too enjoy, food, entertainment, the race, and vendors.

Just to add to that, there is a sponsored mud racing comp., and a rock crawl competition as well.

Johnny has also installed stadium type lighting and lots of bleachers.

There is no doubt that Johhny is trying to cater to all 4x4 enthusiasts and is investing lots of time and money to do it.

No doubt this is going to be the place to be, this May.
