Hurricane Helene

We’re heading to Hilton Head for a few days next week. I thought about trying to go that way, but we’ll probably just make the detour to 77 and go that route.
Dude I dont know,it's probably gonna be as bad one way as the other.

I’m ordering several solar battery banks today to take up this weekend to help. Looking for gas jugs and propane tanks if anyone has any they are willing to let go of. Full or not I will get them filled and up to some people in need
I'll check on propane tanks this afternoon. I think I have a couple that can go. I'll check with my hoarder dad too.

If I still had an excavator or had a good sized skid steer (and more leave to use at work) I'd definitely be up there just trying to move stuff and dig if they'd let me. I feel like the scraping and digging and moving of dirt/mud is going to be everlasting. I hate I can't do anything about it, physically. Just put me in a machine and point me in a general direction!

Not FEMA but gov in general cant do anything withing a reasonable time. Our property in Vero Beach once had a truck wash and fuel station. It closed but dad owned it. EPA had a system where they would reimburse the removal cost of fuel tanks on defunct stations. IIRC it took dad 20 years to get get paid back.

South Greene HS is close to the NC line and that part of the county has been cut off due to the bridge failures and closeures.Since they reopened the bridge over the Nolichucky it's been a drop off place for water and supplies.FEMA came in there yesterday and seized/claimed/whatever,the stuff that had been dropped off there citing since it was left at a state owned facility they could do that and couldn't guarantee it would be used in the local community.

That's not right. We are the government we are here to help... My ass. I have two propane tanks and 3 plastic gas can's I'd donate to whoever could use them up there but not sure how to get them there right now.

@Jody Treadway - Remember that blue Jeep Cherokee you sold me?

I gave it to my dad a few years ago. He said it's been a life saver up in Boone in getting out of there area and into town. It's the only vehicle they had that was capable of it.

The 'offroading' on pavement sport up there is so extreme now that he taped a cell to his mirror and filmed himself driving up the road and his washed out quarter mile long driveway up the mountain.

Whoever built that one. Good job. (I trimmed the fenders and added the rear armor.)

OB is ok but closed until further notice in an effort to keep their employees safe. Solid move IMO.
People say they didn't see the cash only signs and attendant stating such. Somebody was actually shot here yesterday over it.
We waited around 20 minutes today for the $20 worth. They have somebody directing you in as there is room, somebody guiding you to your pump, a SHP watching and cash up front.
Worked really well.
I'll try to top off tomorrow just in case. Otherwise I'll park the Gawdzilla and DD the WJ.
I'll say this, I'm glad I've read so many post-EMP books over the years. It's amazing how unstable society gets when it's members lose a little comfort.
I greeted a man on my driveway yesterday who was asking to cut across our woods to check on his elderly widow mother next door. I met him in only my boxers, t shirt and G22. Wife was keeping an eye out until he started his business and we realize knew each other through work.
Can't trust anyone at first glance. The ones who hear your genny running may want something you have pretty badly...
Haha, it is a strange thing. I emptied my shop yesterday with my rifle across my chest and glock on my waist.

For any operators, there are companies looking for ppl to come run equipment.

I miss that Jeep! Glad it's still going strong

Saw this on Facebook. I'd believe it.

I CAN LITERALLY NAME PLACES FOR THE NEXT 45 DAYS AND STILL NOT COVER THEM ALL
AND SO MANY MORE!!!!
PLEASE. To all my friends who want to help, the best use of your funds and attention is going to be the places that have been brushed over in the past few days. Watching all of the news outlets and the places who are receiving government help and aid are NOT the places that have the MOST DESTRUCTION. If you want to know what places you can help the most PLEASE REACH OUT. The people who need the help are the people living paycheck to paycheck, NOT the vacation homers and tourists who make a novelty out of my home.
Do what needs to be done for the people who need it. End of rant.

Post by our county emergency management office. Gonna have to finish welding up the killdozer just to help with supplies. It's not about SAFETY, it's about CONTROL.

I tend to agree with you, but... They're probably also worried about folks trying to go all cowboy and get themselves in a situation where they need rescue and further strain the system.

The big problem is FEMA.
The big ham radio resource for stuff like this is actual individual opertors who are prepared with equipment and expertise in working disaster communications.
The helping body is called ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services).
The ARRL ( big ham radio lobby and testing group) is “in charge” to some extent, but it’s still the individual with boots on the ground that is expected to operate independently.

During 911, they were absolutely invaluable. A free, trained, capable resource that simply just worked.
FEMA tried to control them in NYC and FEMA was told to kick rocks ….. we’re just fine as we are ….. and they were.

Afterward FEMA gained enough support in DC and the FCC to force the ARRL to the table.
FEMA said work under us or get lost. They were told no, and no one fought them.
Then FEMA managed to force the rest of DC to basically shut ham radio out.
But most emergency service everywhere else supported radio.
Finally FEMA got the FCC to make some rules and regulation concessions to the ARRL in exchange for control.
The things the ARRL got were new frequencies, a few new , easier rules, etc, etc ….. things they had been working for for years.
So the ARRL sold their soul and sold out the ARES.

They lost thousands of volunteers over this ….. me being one.
The training was all online, long and mostly unneeded crap that basically put FEMAs hand on every step of the process.
FEMA is just like said earlier …… all about control.

^^^ well said

He’s from my hometown. I went to school with his sister. True story. I posted it in the early pages. They’re destroying that assistant fire chief on the lake lure fire department page.
Because Internet trolls are exactly what the situation needs right now. He's an assistant chief in a Podunk town in crisis, of course he said something stupid under pressure

I haven't had time to read the whole thread yet, but it's pretty rough here. This is the first time I have had any phone signal since Saturday. We were very fortunate to just have a mud slide at the house, it didn't damage anything, just made a huge mess. Lots of folks are in bad shape up here, but we're working through it.
