I hate auto parts chain stores

Agree...nothing wrong with that at all. This whole thread is kinda damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Ask if it’s 2wd/4wd, parts guy is an idiot. Answer all the questions and get a wrong part, parts guy is an idiot. Your scenario played out...parts guy ain’t so bad, had it been the wrong part though...
But it would have been the wrong part if I had looked it up on their website also. When you search on a parts store website your just doing what the parts guy does. You have to answer all those seemingly meaningless questions to get to what you need. Sometimes 2wd and 4wd makes a difference in parts you wouldn't think of. The parts guy behind the counter in alot of cases is only as big of an idiot as the jerk that walked in looking for the part.

Believe me, my favorite parts guy gives me an endless line of crap when he sees me, he knows I’ve got something odd and uncommon that I’m lookin for. He pretty much always comes thru.
I deal with parts people on a daily basis internal to the company I work for, some are excellent, there have been a few that need instructions to operate the pencil sharpener as well as a how to video.
Going from LP to diesel to 80vdc battery powered and anything in between, I as well as the parts people I deal with need to be diverse and able to think on their feet.
Seen many automotive techs turn tail after a few days because there is such a diversity in what we work on they get overwhelmed and let it get to them.

Well my thing is if I come in and say I need a front axle seal for my 2000 jeep cherokee 4.0. Then you proceed to ask me if its 4wd or not. Like it's a here's your sign award. I rather use part numbers if I can.

The employees cant be experts on all things parts but could atleast have a basic under standing about what everything does.

Again...I don’t necessarily disagree, I’m not the one that started the thread. My primary argument has been chances are pretty good you can find the part number you need faster than the counter guy (regardless of how ‘good’) and you can avoid the line of questioning if you have it. Any of the other noise has just been old dudes that wanna shove it up a young know-it-all’s ass.

I started the thread. It wasn't really about what the parts clerk knows or don't .... it just devolved quickly.
My complaint was the guy telling my wife the product he had was the same thing I wanted when it obviously wasn't.
I sent her to the store with the exact brand names and parts numbers available for the particular tool .... he gave her
the wrong one saying "it's the same thing" just to get the sale.

Karma bit me in the ass today, wife was in drive thru at Culver's (busiest place in Clayton currently) and stalled the 4Runner (5spd) battery DOA in the lane....

Had to step out of my comfort zone and went to O'Reilly's, it was pleasant and painless.... they even opened the door for we as I carried the trashed battery in.

Shout out to Big Mack's towing for the boost pack to get it off the lot and into a parking space away from the crowds.

The Clayton O'Reilly's has always been the best chain parts house in town, and since all the independents are gone I'd say they're the best period. I only use Advance more because I usually order online and use a coupon.

And how is Culver's? Haven't been yet, always seems busy and the chemo has my taste buds all jacked up again.

New burger joint across 70 from Bojangles, between the CVS and PepBoys.

This is the first battery i’ve had to pay retail for in 10-12 years (benefits of the job) i didn’t want an Advance battery and NAPA was to far away to get a Deka , it’s warrantied for 2 years, batteries are fawking expensive....... it starts and runs now, i’m happy.

Culver’s is pretty good, greasy cheese burgers, have only had twice, first time was a fish sammich, was ok. had a Wisconsin Swiss sourdough burger today. i wanted more, it was good. They appear to be a chain from Wisconsin, Green Bay Packers posters on the inside pushing cheese curds and such.

Where/what is Culvers? Never heard of it.

@awheelterd Culvers is between CVS and PEPBOYS on 70, in front of Cleveland Draft House.

Yeah I had to put two in the mega cab after it sat for a month. That bill definitely hurt my feelings....

Culver's is a Yankee burger chain and it is fine. Just fine. Not great. Better than a lot of the options out there, but I certainly wouldn't drive across town for it.

But the ice cream is pretty dang good. Chocolate with Reese’s cups is the bomb.
This is a very valid point. Decent burgers and good ice cream.

I couldn't find a store with 5 quarts of Lucas 85-140 in stock. So I had to go to two stores.

Why doesn't anyone keep it in stock.

Because it is overpriced snake oil and most people don't fall for it?

I’ve got a store manager friend at O’Really’s that’s not too bad. I mainly take part numbers into him because I always work on random stuff. He’s got 4 trucks that I “use” for parts, he ask me which one to look up. And generally he tries his ass off to seek out what you need. He’s a horrible mechanic, even worse fabricator. But he’s not a bad dude. If I can’t find it he might be able to, but I love making him look up the most random stuff that I know is gonna be a pain in the ass. Like 76-78 caddy El Dorado rear calipers. He will try his ass off find them. He can get a left not a right one, and he’s amazed how few there are.

I plan to order a 5 gallon bucket here soon to keep in the shop so I don't have to go to a bunch of parts stores.

I prefer the gallon jugs so I can put my pump on it. If I had a lift and space I’d totally do one of those carts you just throw the jug or bucket under it, throw the tube in it, and pump.

I've debated on getting a lift, would definitely make gear work x10000 easier but it would make it my already tight shop feel smaller.
