Interstate merging rant

My rules of thumb for driving are consistency and don't impede the flow of traffic. Since I have a shorter fuse than most, I would have probably grabbed a bang bang out of the glove box and my trusty crow bar when he pulled in behind me, I would have had no idea what his intentions were...but holding your lighter to the gas pump was one helluva move...not sure I woulda come up with that, that quickly. It's not your responsibility to ensure other drivers know how to drive, courtesy is always nice...but that's at my discretion...which typically isn't at the bottom of an on ramp.

common sense goes a long way and most people today have none. Damn the road rage idiot. I would have done the same thing, Dylan (except maybe the lighter and gas nozzle maneuver  )

Your vehicle can slow down at a much faster rate than it can accelerate, therefore it makes more sense to be going faster than traffic, so that you can slow down to the speed of traffic if necessary

I tried explaining that to a cop once... he didn't exactly buy it...

Well hopefully that guy and his many friends are not potential customers that you just blew off. Iam just saying it would not have killed you to ease up (not slam on your brakes) and let him in. If he got in behind you he must have been driving as far as you. I drive I40 everyday between Winston and Greensboro so I see my share of idiots.

Another Reason to drive a BIG ASS BUS.. people that are idiot drivers trying to merge in will not try to push you out of the way..

I love seeing there eyes get real big when they realize there is a 40 foot bus next to them and there entrance lane is ending.. usually they are on there cell phones which makes it even more fun to watch :)

^^^That's why I like driving my Bronco...I'm not afraid to trade paint with that. Chances are they're looking at my frame anyway...being decapitated is a pretty good motivator to drive better.

I don't drive in the right lane of an interstate. When exiting I don't move to the right until I'm beyond the previous acceleration lane, and when entering I always try to be out of the right lane by the start of the next exit ramp. My gas pedal and I are good friends, heavy on the gas, heavy on the brakes.

How hard would it have been to easr up a little to let him merge in? You were getting off at the next exit anyway. With your name all over the side of your van doesn't seem very smart to have done anything you did. I don't have a dog in this fight, just saying.

He was never ahead of me. In fact, it kinda surprised me to see him zoom up in my peripheral vision. I'm in a van with no side windows in the back, and he just suddenly appeared at my passenger side window.. He must have been going a lot faster than me, just not fast enough to take the lead. And it happened so fast, that hitting the brakes or easing up some, was not an option. And even if I stuck my foot through the gas pedal, my van would not respond very rapidly.

I agree the lighter thing wasn't smart, but it worked. He quit hollering cuss words at me and he left. As for the driving stuff...I did nothing wrong.

you would be amazed what a small gap a "don't give a damn" and a lead foot will fit in when merging!! I also use my mirror an never make eye contact they asume i dont see them i guess haha!!!!

scared to death!!!!!

I think he scared the folks behind me to death and they thought this lunatic was about to cause a wreck..maybe that's where he got the room to merge. And it's a stretch to believe he may have friends.:)

My daily driver is a 3500 quad cab long bed dodge so I rarely have any problems in traffic im usually runing faster than everyone when getting on the interstate and just back off the throttle and blend right in with my signal on even the big rigs usually have respect and will back off to let me in but I dont fuck around and hold anyone up.
When I drive the wifes car its a different story ill do the same thing and I get some asswipe that jerks it over from the fast lane and tries to race me to the end of the ramp but what if the tables are turned and im the one driving down the interstate and a big rig weighing 80k is trying his best to get up to speed and get over should I make him slow down just because he is the one merging? This argument can go all sorts of different ways.

I have to agree with novacayne. I commute 100 miles everyday. I don't putt and by no means fart down the entry ramp, so if I'm running 70 plus at the bottom of the ramp like I should be, and traffic is humming along and fairly heavy; (IE) No easy move over for the right lane. Is it safer for me to slam on the brakes and ride those strips at some half ass pace, or some random person to just let off the gas enough to let me slide in?
Sorry, fellows I've been the guy hung out running every bit of 70 plus with a car load of family and have that one jackass run me 200 yrds down the rumble strips. I finally passed him using the emergency strip and then promised my wife I wouldn't kill him on the spot if he dared approach me. It works both ways and requires common sense and just maybe a little courtesy from time to time. Sure at that point I could have tried to ease in behind, but what's safer? Merge with traffic coming up on you with little or no gap or slipping in front. OH, where all just racing and gotta be first can't let that guy in.......rant goes both ways I recon. Nothing toward your situation Dylan. But the gas thing is priceless:beer:. My deck is two clips deep and I don't have the balls to call mans bluff like that!

I get what you guys are saying..and I really do believe it can go both ways, but this time was different. I wasn't racing, or had to be first or anything like that. Wish I had this on video or could someway share the situation with everyone. Just had to be there I guess.

It's not rocket science..............You're trying to merge into traffic traveling at interstate speeds............only a fool would expect folks to slow down at every onramp, to allow slowpokers to take 2 miles to merge/reach the posted speed limit. Most folks will let any vehicle merge if they're at about the same speed...........If your going half the speed of the higway traffic and it's crowded, you will not find a space to merge w/o causing a near miss or catastrophe and hard feelings from the persons you impede/endanger by driving like a dumbass. Some peeps need to stay off superhighways IMO.

Was he in a Prius? Maybe the throttle was stuck.

FAWK HIM!!!!! you win!!!!! all douches should suffer a loss like his daily!!!

Oh and who the hell follows a person into a gas station just to talk?? tThat guy has issues and obvious violent intent!! I fell the penalty in today's society is much to high for punching somebody in the face!!!

Regardless of how fast or how slow you're going on the ramp...it's not the responsibility of highway drivers to let you on. If you can't see how traffic is flowing and 'pick your bitch' so to speak so you can get on without traveling down the rumble strips, that's on you. It's really not that difficult to merge on to the highway, figure out when to punch it so you can mesh in to traffic without impeding someone else...that's about it. Courteous driving is a completely different topic...if traffic is so heavy the average person can't figure out how to get on the highway safely, I'll TAP my brakes if that will make a difference...if they can't make it...if it's that complicated for them...maybe they shouldn't have a license. As for a big rig...I typically follow dirt road rules...bigger truck has right of way.

I once had a guy chase me down because he said I almost hit him (I didn't) and then started yelling at me and asked me "are you just in a hurry, or are you an asshole?"

I responded "you chased me down just to berate me and somehow I'm the asshole?"

He sped off.
