Joys of boats

It’s about 100 in parts and 3-4 hrs and requires you building a tool but will keep your boat from sinking. If one is bad it’s a 5” hole pouring water into the boat

Protip, make a plug for all through-hull fittings and keep them accessible on the boat. Blow an exhaust line while out? Grab that plug and quickly jam it in there.

For those of you that store your boat in the winter, besides regular winterizing do you pull the plugs and fog your cylinders? I’ve done this once, but never had any problems without doing it either. Just curious how you guys winterize.

Forgive me for hijacking

Plenty of cars sit for years without fogging, I don't see how boat motor would differ any. Not saying it's not good to do, but saying it may not really make any difference in the long run

This is why i bought a newer boat/motor. 2011 Carolina Skiff/40 Suzuki. I have not had a single issue in the 5 years i have owned it. I flush, store inside and drain fuel before winter/spring. I watched my Dad and his friends struggle getting shit going every year so I learned that maintenance and storage are keys to longevity, just like every thing else
I did the same thing with a 25 hp tiller on a 14' aluminum boat. I even let it set like seven years and fired right up. Lol

How old?

With a delay like that, I always think of a fuel delivery problem first. A problem with things like plugs or injectors generally doesn't wait for 3 seconds to show itself.

Does it have a primer bulb, and is the bulb getting sucked flat?
I'd always change the fuel filter first, especially if you haven't replaced it yet, and double especially if it's a water separating fuel filter. It's amazing how quickly and easily a fuel filter gets clogged on a boat of any significant age. Buy two, so you always have a spare on hand when you actually need it, instead of on Sunday when everyone is closed or no one stocks it. Also, buy OEM filters because they're still a relatively cheap part, and the generic aftermarket filters (Sierra, etc.) are often only available in larger micron ratings.

There are some other easy things too, like not waiting for the ECU to fully boot on some outboards until you hear the beep (like Evinrude, not sure about Mercury stuff). If this is not done on an Evinrude ETEC for example, the min throttle position adapt is not done properly and can cause all kinds of stumbling and hesitation problems (the fix is to turn off, and re-start properly the next time).

If you haven't had the boat long, you might be overlooking something simple from lack of familiarity.

I’ve not winterized one boat I / we’ve owned in 33 years and they’ve all been good to go.
That’s everything from a 90 OMC, 140 Suzuki 4 stroke, 400hp in board, Perkins diesels, tiller motors. I’m not a believer.

I have friends that drain everything, blow any water out, throw in some stabilizer, and that’s it. It’s always spooked me not doing it after my stepbrother’s block cracked one winter.

The fishing is better in the winter. You just have to dress warmer, especially when you do mostly night fishing like we do. That whole work-during-the-day bullshit is a drag.

You don't rack up 340 engine hours per year (mostly at night) by winterizing something.

Wakeboard boat. No playing in the lake in January for me.

Are you bass fishing at night?... or catfish?

Get your big boy panties on. I’m water skiing on warm days in March at glenville (highest altitude lake this side of Mississippi)

But when I had my inboard boat we drained it and filled the block full of antifreeze

I grew up surfing all winter and still do when I get a chance. I don’t mind it I just have no friends that want to play when it’s cold. Most don’t have wetsuits.

Bass. We catch the odd bigass catfish, but it just pisses us off because they fight like a sulking turtle and are a pain in the ass to unhook without bringing it onboard and sliming the carpet up. You'd be surprised at how aggressive some of the catfish species are about hitting bass lures. Nothing will turn a spinnerbait into a useless twisted pile of scrap metal like a 15 pound cat after some "death rolls".

Speaking of boat joy, one of the bank outputs on the Ranger's onboard charger has packed it in after 10 years of service. Time to start shopping, or more correctly time to start shopping and then find out what the boat owner is comfortable paying for.
On the plus side, a new charger from a different brand will weigh 10-14 pounds less than the 23 lb brick that's on there now.

Now if I can just get him to buy some AGM batteries.....

I've bought a few cheaper ones. They haven't lasted at all. If you can find another 23 pound brick you'd be better off.

I can't remember right off but the last one I had was a NOCO two bank 8a I believe. I did not last long and took the batteries with it.

I've got a Minn-Kota brand two bank now. I hope it lasts.

The Minn Kota are supposed to be really good, at least the Precision series, they're on the list of choices.. We need a 3 bank unit. The Minn Kota are also 8 pounds instead of the current 23 pound unit.

The NOCO Gen3, ProMariner ProTournament, and Minn Kota are the top choices at the moment..

I liked my noco too. Until I didn’t. I did have the mini. Maybe that’s the difference.

Mine is the 26000 or something it’s 12/24 volt. I’ve had it for over a year and it’s always seemed to do good for me and I’ve left it out in the rain charging stuff before.

My boat and trailer weigh 3600#. It’s about time for new hubs(rust). How long would 3500# hubs work? I have an odd ball 4200lb oil bath hub now. Thinking about going to a standard type axle
