King of the Hammers discussion

Fly to Ontario, pickup rv, drive 1.5 hrs to Hammertown, stay there.

Flight is usually around $400,
RV is around $1000, including gas, water refill on lakebed,

Food is available on lakebed but is pricey.

Figure on 5200 mile round trip if driving, so $1500-$2000 on fuel. Less if towing sxs. More if stopping at hotel each night/fancy restaurants.

The catch is transportation around on lakebed. Need something to get from a-b to see some of it. 4wd truck or suv rental is $600-$1000.

It’s much easier to work out as a group. Some flying, some towing. Cost splitting etc.

Can spend more or less but that’s middle of the road.

or you can volunteer to work with a team and you will be surprised how much fun it is and how much you get to see first hand.

Even though I dont race the big race I can say from what I have experience and seen and talking with others that do race 4400 is prep, pre run and luck are your friends.

Had I not hurt my elbow I was planning to pre run all day monday and tuesday but that quickly changed my plans. Biggest thing that is hard for east coasters are desert runs and practice. we just dont have the woops or terrain around here to do good testing and shock tuning.

I was there Wed-Friday afternoon. I saw the JK/Yota chaos, the K10 chaos, the mortars being lobbed into the crowd on Chocolate Thunder, and the general dumbassery that seemed rampant. I hadn't been there since 2013, and I highly doubt I'll ever go back after this year. When I don't feel safe even as a spectator keeping a far distance on the rocks, I definitely won't feel safe anywhere else. Thursday night was a shitshow on Chocolate Thunder when the Duramax Savana van parked itself on the obstacle, and the ensuing rollover from an S10 damn near killed two people when it rolled.

Mortars thrown into the crowd? I have just recently seen where dude got hit by the truck rolling over. It sounds like there is a ton of other crazy stuff that went down that I didn’t even know about.

I don’t see how that kind of stuff can continue without some major regulation being ranked up.

Wow. Sounds like its only a matter of time before BLM gives up and shuts this down.

Curious to hear more details of these events, even if deemed better for Garage storage

Too much of a good thing will always get ruined by the asshats. I've always enjoyed our past time or any for that matter with a little self protected selfishness. In short, I've always been careful who I invite.

I was talking to my FIL who went for a show he was on out there. He said it was absolutely bat shit insane. The dumb ass drunk idiots were in full force. From a few people he talked to, they are going to make changes next year because the level of stupidity has gotten out of control and its only a matter of time before someone gets killed.

I wouldn't mind maybe doing some wheeling out there some day, but I won't go to KOH. I would go whenever the fewest people are there, because I hate crowds.

The week prior to KOH is actually fairly reasonable regarding people. They are there, but most of the asshats haven’t come out in force like you see in the video.

those nights around the main race.. yeah, I’d be in camp enjoying the company of the team and helping with prep and resting up for a long Friday of support.

I never left hammertown the entire week at night and did not miss it one bit.

I had a great week with my dad and son in hammertown and racing and i would go back again and do it all over. the crazy crap outside can be fun but I saw no need this year

Wednesday night is when the bad crap started. Prior to then, and earlier (before 1030ish) is like anywhere else wheeling at night.

Yes a lot of dumb stuff occurs.

If you want to avoid it, the week before and early in the week is the way to go.

For perspective, Steve in big buggy probably went up choc thunder and back door close to 20 times before wed night. Few people around at each one, but not a bad crowd at either.

Better to just stay in Hammertown wed, thurs night.

Another note. If you are with a group, tie a glow stick to a rope, and wear as necklace. Looking for people in that crowd is insanity. Getting separated is an issue. Have something easy to distinguish at night.

I’ve seen worse drunk shenanigans at little jagger/lower rock garden from people on 4wheelers in the middle of the daytime.

It’s very similar to that atmosphere.

I don’t drink much, and I never drink and wheel. So it’s easy for me to say, don’t do that.

No way I would skip KOH bc of the madness. I’d just avoid those areas late at night, late in the week.

If I can work the bugs out of my JK, and the 3.8 doesn’t let me down, I’m planning on going next year. I’ve got a few friends to visit out that way, plus a few other trails within 2hr of the hammers I want to run. Some stuff out at Stoddard Wells rivals some of Johnson valley stuff. And I wouldn’t mind running a few trails around Big Bear, one is Matino Wash, it’s fun. I miss wheeling out there.

From what I gather, the shit show doesn't start until late like you say. I talked to one guy that said he left CT around 2am and it was still packed. If I get the chance to go, I'll just head back to hammer town around 9 and I think it would be ok. Plus I kinda turn back into a pumpkin once it gets that late!

I had a 5am wakeup Friday morning to get the race car staged by 6am. I was laying in bed at 2am Thursday night listening to the ‘busa sandcars rip back from CT, from 11p to 2a, it was crazy. At least it sounded that way.

you need better ear plugs . I slept like a baby :)

Everything was cool, until Thursday night. I thought someone would surely run into my motorhome. And fireworks started around 4am, until after 5am. First year I’ve experienced that, but years before, I’ve stayed inside hammertown. If I go next year, I will not be camped beside Boone Rd.

I can’t imagine mad maxing it outside Hammertown lol.

Nevermind, found 'em.

They about crushed that little kid.

WTF stands that close? Geez, what a bunch of morons.

Here's the fight:

New IROKs. Check. Stripper bead lock wheel ring cutout. Check. No hood. Check.

Yep checks out in my book. That guy probably wanted to roll with the crowd he had watching.

I wouldn’t mind spectating this :D
