Kodak rock closed?

Would be interested in the issue. Is it money for guardrail? Or other things?

Coming to the workday ? If so you can ask the USFS in person. Just trying to encourage more people to show up. You can also email / call them and ask them.

Doubtful. I live south 2 hours and have already made plans for that day. Only way I ever find out about these work days is if I come here. I use to be on an email list but apparently that is not done any longer.

I know there is an email list that goes out to the Adopt A Trail partner representatives. I'm sure if you contacted Recreation Specialist Terry Savery, tsavery@fs.fed.us , she would be glad to add you to the email list.

Thanks I emailed her.

Dangit. I guess that is it for RML then.

I hope not.

So do I, but in the 24 years that I have been going to Uwharrie, I've never seen a trail that was closed be reopened.

True, and usually that is the beginning of the end. Hope not but.....

Ok i will post this.... A lot of this statement is my opinion and reading between the lines....

Will rocky mountain loop reopen, NO.
Debra has presented a proposal to reopen Kodak rock area, coming in from the bottom side and blocked off above and return the same way.
Will this be done in 2014??? No we have too many issues else where that have to be fixed first then look at it. I do have on our list for this season but doubtful....
In short the more we get done, the faster we can help adress kodak.. My .02

And this is IMHO there attempt at getting URE closed. If the "high attraction" area is closed then less will want to go is what some are thinking. IMHO it does not effect me ridding at URE. I enjoy the forest and try to get up there to ride at least once a year and work once a year. I would like to do more but atm that is the most I can as for "boots on the ground." However, I do have other areas that I might be useful to you guys in this endeavor but it seems like people like to keep the plan hidden.

Ghost there is no hidden plan with FOU or the Volunteers. I have, rather than get into the politics and the "they are closing us down" seniors, tried to focus on the positives and what we can change. For the ones that came to the meeting in December with the Forrest service, got a very informal reasoning of why RML was closed and what it would take to reopen the entire trail(think 2-3 season of total budget for the forest). Debra Walker is going to bat for us in the fact that she has requested an option to get the play area opened, she came right out and said that at the meeting. I am truly sorry that you feel that there is a hidden plan, I will and do tell all I know. My focus at this point is listening to what is reported in trail issues, addressing those with the clubs that sponsor the trails and getting to work done through communication and planning on work days. Have I mastered this yet, HELL no, will I ever, Hell no......
Plan overall plan was laid out by the forrest service 2 years ago.... Get the trails that are open to strandards(illegal bypasses and drainage issues handled) and the discussion of budgeting the opening the new trail can move forward. This is our forest and we need to teach tread lightly and protect what we still have, rather than worry about what we dont have any more. Sorry if I seem too optimistic, but trying to be the solution rather than the problem.... Feel free to call me any time with Questions

BLUF.

The more people that cone out to the workdays the more we get done out there on " our " trails and the more money that the USFS gets in grants to be able to work on RML.

That is why I go to every workday I can which for the last 3 years now has been every one.

I don't get this post at all. Is it directed at me or someone else?

I don't think it is directed towards you specifically. I think he is just trying to explain that man hours at the work days equals money for the trail system. More people come, more cooperation and more money for improvement.

I am not trying to sound like a dick, please don't take this in a bad way. But it does no good to complain about how things have went and how they are going, while sitting back and not trying to do something about it. People want to complain about it being closed but they do not want to come out and try to help get things in order. Now that is not towards you directly, that goes for many people that only complain about the closure and do nothing to change it.

We need help, it's a lot of fun, just come on out and see what it's all about.

I know what the manpower is for. I know it converts directly to $$$. I know I cannot come out often. I have a family and 15 year old twin boys and a recent divorce legal fight. I also realize some people can do more then me and I applaud them for that and thank them. I appreciate what all are doing to help keep it open. I was and am merely sharing my thoughts on the subject and trying to be tactful and constructive.

Ghost, You said you had more to offer. What is on your mind? We can use all the help we can get in many ways....

JC and I have had a convo back channel. I might know of some guardrail I can get ahold of. He has suggested that the plan is to go with the treated wood fence. He also suggested I contact Terry. Which I will do.

We need both. I invision wood for permanent block offs and metal to be moved place to place... Thanks for the info, i know terry has been looking for more so if you have a lead, let me or her know what we can do to help secure it. We(friends of ure) can even get tax deductions for donations sinve they are a non profit

Just curious why the switch back to wood? Seems like the wood found in the fire pits would have confirmed its going to get take down more easily and used as such.

Not split rail but 6x6 up rights with 4x6 stringers. Have you seen whats on rocky mtn loop this year? Looks way better than the highway gaurd rail and more to nature imo. Carolina trail blazers voted to donate 480 ft of this design rail because they felt strongly to help preserve to nature aspect, it costs more and takes a little longer to install but is something that helps the overall look. This is not the answer where there needs to temp blockages or emergency blockages(need it done before prep and volunteers can be gathered). I hope this makes sense, its hard to get points across in writing sometimes. The issue in the past with the split rail was it took no tools to take apart and grab a 6ft string to throw in a fire pit, a 12 ft 4x6 with 6 3/4 bolts is ALOT more work for someone to burn....

Very true. I have not helped on them yet and haven't looked up close at them so was not aware of all that. Thanks for sharing.

The large rail Snappy is speaking off is not easy to destroy and most wouldn't even look at it as that because its bolted down and heavy, people are too last to try that hard to take it apart.

BLUF = Bottom Line Up Front. Not directed to you.

We need people out there working so we can get more money for the USFS. These are " OUR " trails, so WE need to work together in any way you can to get the mission done. Mission being keeping the trails for the next generation.

It was not directed at anyone at all. Just to the world.

While I understand the logic I know how drunks in the forest work. An axe and a few beers and that looks like a fun challenge to some.

Ok I did not see that or understand it.

Update: talked with Debra Walker tonight. There is progress being made . They spent about $20,000 on the first arch dig, it was an above ground collection and about 50 lbs of artifacts collected. The next step is a below ground survey, she explained they basically dig test holes looking for more.
