IMO
If you just start to tariff china (or whatever a country) you will just see production move to the next cheapest country, you won't see it move to the US (except in areas that no other country can produce it for cheaper). Instead of an item moving production to the US and having a price increase of 20%, it will move somewhere else to see a price increase of 10%.
Bringing stuff to the US is a great idea in theory, just like increasing minimum wage is good in theory, but in reality it just makes everything more expensive for everybody.
There is a place for cheap stuff and there is a place for quality, it just depends on the use case.
Especially right now with the economy (and I think its just a lot of overall human nature overall not just with the current economy), I don't think people care as much where something is made.
If you can buy a pair of shoes from china that cost 50 bucks, and last 1 year, vs 70 bucks in the US and last 18 months, for the same basic thing, most people I think will buy based on price. Sure long run it might be cheaper for the US made better quality product, but people don't even know half the time how long they will even use the product for. Its the same reason I'll go to Harbor Freight at times and get a tool, I know it won't last, but I also know I don't need to go buy a Milwaukee because I won't be using it all the time. People have always been able to find US made things if they really cared (for most items), they just don't want to pay the price for it, I honestly don't really know if the demand is there anymore (overall).
