Mid-engine Honda Buggy Build, FJ-40 axles

Michael is getting married today and then hes off to Mexico for a few days. This is probably not on his mind...

It better not be, or he married the wrong girl!!

I wish them luck!

....then back on the buggy.

Yeah its a pretty sweet build have seen close up and it looks wicked.Yeah he needs to get back from mexico to finish my SAS yota!haha!Hope your havin fun man!

michael,

are the joints in the airshocks going to allow enought movement side to side as the axle flexs? Just something i was looking at while i was getting ideas for my build.....still need to start though

Seth

Back from mexico... It was fun. Haven't worked on the buggy lately but hope to get started on it more soon.

I flexedt out w/o the tires on it and it seems to be OK on the shocks, Fully flexed I could still turn the end of the shocks, they didn't seem to be in a bind, I'll check it out more though.

Hey Kevin, sorry for not replying, haven't looked at the thread for awhile. I have MOST of the parts, just have to get the time to put it all together. My other 2wd buggy needs an engine rebuild (burning oil), so I'm doing that first so I can have something to get out in the woods with every once in awhile.

Anyways, got married on May 31st, and I can't call you and tell you, I don't have your number :D How's the baby doing?

Looking good, I've always thought about using a FWD engine/trans to make a buggy, but my plans were a lot cheaper and more redneck, plus I've kept the Honda motors (which I love) out of the equation because everyone always said the rotation was backwards, but I bypassed my own thoughts of using the Honda trans... duh. I probably missed it, do you have a limited slip trans?

OK, now, since the first picture of the turbo you've been really low key about your turbo experience (maybe I missed it in skimming). What are you doing for fuel management, oil pickup, etc. A homegrown turbo is a big undertaking, but based on everything I've seen, you're up to it, I just wanna hear more. Plus, that crinkle paint on the turbo looks really good, I used the same paint on my cage, it holds up well, but I'd be interested to know if it holds up to the high heat. If it does, the next turbo on my Audi will look just like that one.

Keep up the good work.

Just found this today and being a DD honda guy this is cool. My civic has the 1.5 16v with 102hp. Completely stock with 300,000 miles plus. Can't wait to see the finished buggy.

Dude stop being a lazy married man and get this done!So you started rebuilding your joyner yet?You going to the races down at the stables this weekend?Im not you know I have to fix my truck still haha!fag.

I love following this build.. Lets see some new additions... Maybe have the new wifey holding a wrench and getting dirty under the buggy.

So how much HP is this 1.6 L motor going to throw out?

THis is intresting. Cannot wait to see some video of this on the trails.

2010 sounds about right at this pace :)

Basement is about cleaned out to where I have room to work on it. Looking for a Honda Civic (guess an Accord or any other honda/acura would work) Hood/grille/fenders so I can get started on the frontend.

Gotta change a few small things on the rear, make some spacers, etc, but I think the rear suspension is pretty much done (aside from bumpstops). Have a lathe at my dad's house now so I'll be able to make spacers and such, as well as drill/tap any links that need to be done.

Just posting up to say I haven't forgotten it, and will be back working on it very shortly. If anyone with buggy building experience wants to come by and throw out some ideas on the front design please do.

Dude!Where have you been havent heard from you in awhile,so you keep telling these lies like your actually going to start on this thing again huh?lol! So what else you gotta do?

I hear him sometimes in his shop across the way, but no updates???? Come on Mike lets see some pics atleast to keep us interested.

FINALLY I have some updates, got the tubework shown done in the past two days (hoop back was already done, and the very bottom tube)

Still have to cut/adjust the upper shock mounts, weld on link mounts on the axle, and put in alot of brace tubes, but it's starting to look like a buggy now at least...

Hope to have it sitting on the all 4 tires in a week or less (maybe this weekend?) Since I missed the URE race last year I am really going to try to make the one this year, I've got some friends good w/ Honda engines that plan to come help some.

And as we all know, any true Honda buggy must have a Honda grille :D

You will have to use the d16 head from an early integra. Its the only DOHC head that will fit that block. If you want to made some decent power and gain a bunch of low end torque (a bunch for a honda motor anyway) I have a b18a1 for sale.

Couple more, 2nd one is of the engine/turbo piping/intercooler.
I plan to get a 16 valve head to put on it. The 8 valve I have has 70 HP, 16 valve has 102HP.
If I can find a 16 valve from a D16 (1.6L) then that would boost the HP a little more (rais compression).
Also looking for a Civic EX transmisson because I think the ~12MPH in 1st gear is going to be a little too fast for even the easiest crawling... EX transmission should be able ~5mph @ 3500rpm's, still going to be quick, but hopefully I can manage and not have to put a slushbox in it.
If I remember right you were running it transverse. Why not run a divorced 205 vertical for lower gearing?

the transaxle is the transmission/t-case all in one. No transfer case at all. Seen it work with automatic's, but haven't seen a honda buggy w/ a 5 speed, guess I'll find out how it works...

As for the B18, I already have alot of D series stuff, plus the engine mounts are for a D series. If the D15 w/ either a D16 head or D15 16 valve head w/ the turbo isn't enough, I will just build a really stout D16 :D

HAHA!Well at least you have got some more done on it but hey I mean really the honda grill?Your killing me!
