MOAB 2014 may 31- june 9th

Just one other fact I have learned on this trip is that the myth of Kansas being flat is bullshit!!! I noticed that my fuel mileage was the worst in Kansas and I had to push the jeep harder than I had expected.... So even though Kansas looks flat driving, here are the elevations... Kansas City, Kansas is 740 ft above sea level. Burlington Colorado , the first little town into Colorado after Kansas, is 4170 ft above sea level!! I felt I had my foot on the floor board through Kansas. Now I know why!!!
 
Yeah my truck would hate life just as much. It didn't like the elevation changes going to Harlan. So Moab will be no different in a couple years. Might just have to give it an artifical atmosphere generator to take care of that.
 
When we went last year, I felt the biggest killer of fuel mileage was the headwind. Every time we got above 70 mph in Kansas the headwind made the hood flutter on Jason's' Jeep.
 
Flat means "horizontal or nearly so". A mile of rise in 400 miles of run is a 0.25% slope. The kitchen floor at your house isn't that flat. :flipoff2:
 
Yeah, places it looked pretty flat I had my foot on the gas! Lowest mpg in western KS, 14.2, best coming down the mountains from Denver to Grand Junction, 17.1.
 
when i was trucking i ran colorado every week for about a year.crossing kansas you always fought a headwind,but it would push you on the way back.if you look at the houses you will notice they have rows of trees planted on the west side to block the wind.it always blows from the west....always.

Got in today at 12:30. Had a great trip with some great people! I sucks I had to wheel a rental because my junk broke, but still a great experience!!
 
Most of the pictures I took was through my bug splattered windshield but I did get a pretty good one of Jason's Jeep going down the final stretch of Hell's Revenge. I'll just leave this right here for you to see. For those of you who havent been out there hopefully you can get some kind of grasp on the enormity of the west. I still can't quite get my head around it.

Wow, just wow. We got home monday at about 9.30 went straight to work tuesday morning, I still feel like a zombie. I am trying to get things caught up around the house.
This trio was by far the most amazing wheelin trip of my life, the best people I could ever ask to call freinds, Haa Yeee!!
The ride out was pretty smooth, St Louis is a dump of a city, want stay there again. Going across kansas was a little tough, got caught up in a thunderstorm and had to stop on the side of 70 twice with the exploding hershies(not fun). Denver is huge but very nice, wish I had more time to explore it like Nacoma and wendy did. The ride across the rockies was awesome, the rive was very high witch made for some great scenery, we made it into Moab via 128 (must do drive) at about 4pm I think.
Steel Bender,, Trail is great, starts out low in the canyon and goes about 14 miles, lots of good ledges and moderate obstacles. Scenery is top notch.
Hells Revenge,, This trail is a must do, it will scare the shit out of you and keep you askin for more. Its not that hard wheelin wise but it will screw your mind on
the scare factor, the hot tubs are twice as big in person as they are in the videos, you cant climb out of them on hands and Knees.
Elephant hill,, Some of the best scenery , out in the middle of BFE, a trail to never wheel alone, the start of the trail is a very fun and tight climb. the confluence overlook seeing the colorado and th green river was very cool
Kane Creek Canyon,, I thought this trail was going to be a cake walk when we started it, man was I mistaken, crossing the creek many times was some thing very different forn any other traill we ran. The last mile of climb out of the canyon is wicked. Nice rock obstacles that like to lean you toward a 1,000 foot abyss in the bottom of the canyon, that will mak you suck some seat cushion.

Things I learned and experienced on this trip,

Do not stay at the Hotels with the name of just Hotel, or Hotel Liqouir
Do not eat at a place just called Cafe
There are some nasty thunderstorms out west.
There are 500 adult superstores between here and Colorado
Drink water, drink water, and drink water
Hotel rooms in Amarillo smell like Ass
Do not run to the restroom at the rest area at 11,000 feet elevation
