I decided that I needed to carry a 60" High Lift Jack so here is what I put together last night:

I needed to be certain that the tailgate would let down with the jack installed so I mounted the jack on the back-side instead of on the top. It is made so that it plugs into the receiver and the carrier can be easily removed when not needed.

Took the 4Runner to the York Summerfest car show on Saturday to pass out Southern Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA) brochures. I had the opportunity to speak with about 60-70 people about SFWDA. I believe that we may pick up a few new members as a result.
At the end of the day I was surprised to win 1st place in the 4x4 division, and I won $50 for the "Most Unique 4x4"... I guess that "Unique" is a good way to describe my rig!

I originally installed the air conditioning compressor onto my Cummins engine using an old idler pulley off of a Dodge something or other... It would throw the belt when you quickly revved and released the throttle. The flat idler pulley applied pressure to the back side of the belt.

This past week I did a little searching and found the Dayton website where I was able to identify a V-belt pulley that would replace the flat pulley. I gave the Dayton number to the guy at Auto Zone and they had it for me the next day for $18.00. After converting the adjuster from pull to push, I installed a longer belt, and now it works perfectly.

Pictures don't show it very well, but I have been working on straightening out some of the suspension quirks. After moving the links and tuning the shocks it seems to be working pretty well. I still have a few more small things to do before I say that it is done...

The top of the stump is about 24" from the ground. The ground is actually mounded up at the base of the stump, so the left tire is about 30" higher than the right tire. You can see that there was a little body lean with the front flexed out.

I took the rig to Uwharrie last Saturday. I didn't get any pictures but Peterson's Four Wheel and Off Road Magazine did. Ali Mansour was there and he told me that Peterson's is going to do a two page spread on the 4Runner. Don't worry Tim, I gave Vice Stitches and 4x4 a plug...

Impressive rig. I'll look for the article. I was driving the white 85 4runner you passed on rocky mtn loop, about the same time my passengers caught up to me after deciding to spot/walk a section. Surprised they didn't ask to ride along in yours.

Wondering about the jack placement. I know a lot of times when you come over an obstacle, the over hang will hit, when it's enough of a drop on the other side. Looks like the jack may get fubared

Departure angle without the jack is 76 degrees (calculated). I'm guessing that it is probably not less than 68-70 with the jack installed. If I need to have more clearance I can just flip the jack mount over in the receiver. When I do that I cannot open the tailgate. I would have to stand straight up, or drop straight down off of a 5' rock to hit it, so it has not been a problem.

Some of you may have noticed that my 4Runner sits a little tall... Normally I cannot see the ground any less than 15-20' in front of the rig, or behind the rig at all. As a result, I have mounted front and rear facing cameras. Now I can see from the front of the bumper out to my normal line of site and I can safely back-up without a spotter. Cool!!!

I was surprised that I was able to pick the entire dual camera system up for about $140 including shipping. They customized the system with one normal, and one mirror image camera. The cameras are housed in weatherproof aluminum casings. The monitor is a 7"TFT flat screen. Each camera has 18 IR LEDs that light things up in the dark. I can switch from camera to camera with the push of a monitor mounted button. There is also a wire that enables it to automatically be switched to the back-up camera when you put the rig in reverse. I chose to not hook up this feature...

I am very happy with this modification.

He had the transfer case in high range. He could have shifted into 3.05:1, or 5.44:1. His girlfriend was in the rig with him, so he wasn't thinking about gear selection....

Notched the oil pan to allow for driveshaft clearance. I will also be making elevated coilover shock mounting brackets . These two modifications will allow me to lower the rig a few inches and also increase the shock up-travel at the same time.
