I'm an opportunist merger. I'll get over early if traffic is moving and there is a spot to merge, or look down the row and see if there is a big gap or slow truck that I can easily and comfortably get in front of.

"Zipper merge" is just a trendy term for self important asshat in Charlotte. You can only "zipper merge" if traffic is moving, and the "zipper mergers" are the ones who drive around everyone and stop at the end and then some ignorant fool stops completely and let's them over, thereby further exacerbating the stalled traffic. Then they look out the window and exclaim "zipper merge" while exhaling spent vape juice.
It isn't the merger's fault if the ignorant fool stops completely to let them in, instead of just slowing down a little.
Simple math.... Keep the lanes the same length, take turns merging, and everyone gets through faster.

I understand the concept, but that's not how traffic works anymore. 10 years ago that's how it worked. Now everyone around here is a complete dickhead and traffic comes to a standstill every afternoon because of it.

And jackasses will pass 10 nice holes to zipper into just to pass one more vehicle and make 5 people jam on their brakes because they cut you off at the end of the lane. I ran a fucker in the grass this morning because of this. This is why I drive a POS truck everyday. I’m going to start carrying water balloons full of antifreeze and ATF to throw at these dumbasses. Fuck them.

And worse than the non zipper self absorbed assholes are the fucktards that will run to the end of the lane, then continue down the emergency lane for another 1/4 mile passing people at 50 mph while I am playing the clutch in, clutch out, clutch in, clutch out game at .00000005 mph. I wanna throw a brick at them.

I wish a trooper could write tickets from video. I would buy a damn nice dash cam just for this. Guy would get at least 3 tickets per day just from video.

Not sure what you mean by 10 "nice holes", but the only position that makes sense - from a mathematical and efficiency standpoint - is the last possible position.
In a zipper, the parts come together in an alternating fashion, right at the end. Not 10 positions back, when its convenient for one peg to do it ahead of time. THAT is why things get fucked up.
EVERYBODY should wait and do it at the very end, and EVERYBODY in the left side should let 1 person to the right of them in front of them (o vice versa depending which lane closes).
People merging early IS the problem and people expecting people to merge early only exacerbates it.

That is nice, but if you let one person in, 4 more try to shoot in too. Heaven forbid you try to leave yourself proper following distance. Might as well put it in park. Socialism will work if greed didn’t exist.

yes but once traffic volume exceeds the capability for one lane, the zipper automatically breaks down since it becomes a bottle neck, so it won't matter, since it's going to back up, and the first person to slow down significantly makes it echo back through traffic as cars pile up. Even if it stayed rolling, you'll reach a point where traffic slows for miles to half the speed of the single lane. Think on it. So that would be 55 (const zone) / 2 = 27 mph. But that's only if there were at least 2 car length between cars for the zipper to work, and you end up with someone stopping because someone didn't have enough room to merge, or they aren't confident to make the merge at 27 mph and stop. Either lane stopping breaks the zipper. Hey pretty good analogy, one broke zipper tooth and they don't work either.

Example the 4 jackasses trying to cut you off at the same time. I hate Charlotte.

Speed is irrelevant. Even one lane getting slower than the other one is, technically, irrelevant, because people in the other lane should still just match the same pace so that the zipper gets fixed. Once one lane is stopped and the other is moving, the only thing that will fix the situation is for both to get moving at the same pace again - and that will happen FASTER if people move over to the more empty lane so that it gets just as congested as the first, which evens out the paces again. Maybe everybody goes a little more slowly in the short term but it smooths out the ripple effect faster.

Nice in theory, but it will never work in Charlotte. Back to my comment on people passing in the emergency lane. Just a bunch of jackasses.

I am well aware of this problem. It is definitely broken by jackasses.
My point is just that you're as much of a jackass by NOT waiting until the end to merge, and getting pissed at the guy who does, as the guy who tries to nudge in 2x in front of somebody.

Where I live, the shoulder of the road is used as a passing lane. Like, going over the white line, around on the right, without even slowing down. That shit is nuts.

I drove N. on the new & improved I-77, to Mooresville, this morning. HA! Dad Blame Numb Skulls, can't even merge off the entrance lane! My speed control is set on 55, on a 65 mph Interstate. You Can't get ahead of Me, I'm Not slowing down to let Your Dumb Ass in! :fuck-you:

So I am a jackass for actually LISTENING to the road signs and warning signs to merge? What kind of communist, liberal, dumbassery is this? You might as well tell kids in school that following rules makes them as much of a jackass as the ones who don't follow the rules.

If you do it too early, then yes....
Well what really makes you a jackass is getting pissy at other people who are actually doing it right and waiting until the last opportunity.
It's just math.

To be clear, if you're merging too far ahead of time, then you aren't following the instructions any more than the guy that does it too late, after the sign.

So you’re defending the theory but acknowledging the theory doesn’t hold true because of reality. That’s where I am. The zipper method would work if everyone played by the rules, but they don’t. I see it every day at the 85 north/40 east split in Hillsborough. Jackasses stay in the two left lanes, passing everyone possible, and then try to jam into the two right lanes to 40 east and screw up the whole works. That’s why there are accident 3 out of the 5 working days each week. I guess those jack wagons are more important than everyone else.

Yes, and no.
The theory dosn't work in reality b/c of assholes.
so I'm saying.. don't be an asshole yourself, so that the theory might actually hold true sometimes.
Instead of just complaining about assholes, and then being one to try and get ahead of the assholes... just do your part and don't be an asshole.

Wait - I think you're missing the point. Maybe?
Waiting until the last moment IS the right thing to do. By merging early, all you're doing is moving the zipper farther up the road, but adding confusion about when the right time to merge is. Everybody should just merge - one at a time - at the last possible moment (that is reasonably safe - NOT a quarter mile before). AT the sign.

At THAT moment:
- if you are the guy merging, and try to be the 2nd car to cut in front of somebody, then you're the asshole
- if you're in the lane getting merged into, then you should let ONE car in front of you. If you don't, then you're the asshole.

In general, it seems there are more people who are trying to do the right thing, and merge early, then get pissed when other people don't. What I'm saying is, that actually isn't logical. Both lanes should stay moving with equal volume until the last possible moment, and let people merge in front of them (ONE at a time). Don't get pissed b/c you zippered too soon and another guy is actually fixing the problem. Backups happen at merges b/c people don't let people in.

Finding a gap to merge into when it works for you and your fellow travelers is not the same thing as zooming past everyone that is already tightly packed and demanding to be let in. I'm glad my commute doesn't require any of this. I have one roundabout to navigate and I'm done. I went to Raleigh for a class last month and I had a bate of rush hour traffic to last me until next year.
