Well, you sent me on a Google quest..... apparently the oil crisis in the 70's had a huge impact on AU and that set the stage in the mind of the Director such that it would have been early-mid 80's (really depends on whose quotes you're reading) with the 3rd movie in the late 90's. The fourth, which I apparently missed altogether, is more explicitly set in 2060 in an attempt to out run time and keep the movie relevant. Yea. Even the actors said it was hard to work in any actual dialog, the story of which itself some have called a good (better?) plot for a movie.
