NC 4x4 clubs!

JC, it looks like there is already an OHV rep...?

Brian Sears is an ATV guy, if that counts :driver:

I tried to contact him last year when SFWDA was looking into different RTP stuff. IIRC, he's a long haul trucker. I never could get him to email or call me back.

FWIW, they consider bicycles off highway vehicles too :)

I think he has been on the committee for quite awhile. His term expires 1/2012. We should start now to see if we can replace him with a NC4x4 voice, a group that has almost 15,000 members according to the forum front page!

Darrell McBane is the guy who oversees the RTP program. He is quick to respond to emails and phone calls but didn't seem to be sympathetic at all to getting another or different OHV rep the last time I talked to him.

We may need to go over his head?

I have been watching this and I will say I am in Raleigh and I would volunteer to be on the RTP program to help be that voice that NC needs in the OHV area.

I guess I need to start making some phone calls and see where I get.

Maybe a good place to start is to email a letter of introduction (for NC4x4) to the people JC listed above. Describing the forum, the activities and contributions to UNF and our collective interest in more participation.

First of all, I have to say that I believe this may very well be the #1 best idea I have ever seen posted on this forum.

Secondly, I would be delighted having Ken Carter as a representative, and I would do all I could to back him up.

Y'all keep this one rolling!

I would second this nomination :)

But, we all should find out whats involved before throwing in our efforts. I don't want to get someone in there that is expecting X and end up having to do Y and fizzle out...

Bruiser was on my list of handful of "voices" i'd like to represent me. Lemme know when to start writing letters to these folks and start throwing your name in.

By the way....Email campaign has begun with all 4 of the contacts listed above. Just a simple email asking for a change in representation and how to nominate a new rep.

Does anyone know this Brian Sears?
I'm a personal friend and can contact him if needed. He is a very active member of the Unifour Trailbike Club. A club that has been around for many years and have done large amounts of liazon and volunter work at Brown Mt. He also travels all over the East coast doing Enduros.

Dear Mr. Hinsley:

Your message was forwarded to me for a response. I am the State Trails Program Manager and responsible for working with the North Carolina Trails Committee (NCTC).

The NCTC is an advisory committee appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and members are responsible for advising the department and the Division of Parks and Recreation on all matters related to trails. The NCTC also review applications and make funding recommendations for Federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) and State Adopt-a-Trail (AAT) grants.

Brian Sears was just re-appointed to the NCTC by Secretary Dee Freeman for a 4 year term. Brian has served as North Carolina's representative with the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council, is a long term member of the North Carolina Off-Highway Vehicle Association and volunteer trail maintainer at the USFS Brown Mountain OHV Trail System. Brian is a true friend of OHV trail users and I do not remember any OHV RTP or AAT grants that were not recommended for funding.

I appreciate your interest in OHV trails and in particular Off-Road trails.

I regret that we lost access to trails at Tellico but am happy that the USFS continues to allow Off-Road trails at Uwharrie National Park - the only public provider of OHV/ATV trails in North Carolina.

I will file your email noting your interest in serving on the NCTC, but I also encourage you to email me again about your interests in the fall so that I do not forget. At that time, please consider sending me your resume and a letter of endorsement from the group you represent.

I collect names of people interested in serving, evaluate candidates and make appointment recommendations to the Division of Parks and Recreation and the department.

Thank you again for your interest and your email. Please let me know if you need additional information.

Sincerely,

Darrell

Thanks Reid.

Darrell McBane mentioned a "North Carolina Off-Highway Vehicle Association" in his email. I've never heard of these guys. Google says they're out of Cullowhee. Does anybody know anything about them?

So I guess the question is, does he actually represent us or mainly just trail bikers? Based on the response above it seems that he may and given his long term involvement may be better to leave him in his position. It would be great if he would consider posting up some info here at times to help keep us informed and to let us know if there is anything we can do to help support him for our benefit.

if you can contact him and ask him how he and the OHV community(vehicles) can work together to help keep lands open and get more funding directed towards OHV use that would be a great start.

I do not want to try to take someone out of a position if he is actually helping.

then either pm or post back up so we can move forward with the best solution to help us win the fight to keep public land open to the public and OHV use that would be great

thanks

Yes, getting him involved here would make me feel ALOT better. Something about someone ive never heard of representing me just doesnt sit well.

I don't get to keep up with anything until late in the evening. Having said that:
I will contact Brian pick his brain and present this thread to him and press him for some feedback.
I used to see him at several harescrambles, but
I never new he held or was tittled to represent what sounds like a viewpoint that emcompasses for more than his offroad and duelsport riding passion. I did know he has always been invovled with the Unifour club, and the AMA along with long time support of Brown Mt..
