NC4X4 Hunting and Fishing

Soooo.... after looking through about 3000 photos from the game cams the last few months- I have one single picture of this animal. Is the consensus coyote? It’s pretty big...

Missed this guy at 11yds this morning. Super steep shot(I’m 30’ up) put it high on his ribs and went right under him! Acorns dropping everywhere, he didn’t know what happened and started coming back for a minute. If I had eaten anything for breakfast I’d have thrown it up.

Dry heaves can sound like a grunt call.

Has anyone ever gone hunting at the Butner-Falls of Neuse game lands? I'd like to get some pointers in case I give it a try this year...never tried hunting on public game lands before.

Not hunted either but biggest thing I learned is to get in early. Like real real early, if you have a safe enough climber that you can doze off an hour or two do it. Other people are going to be lazy and come in right at legal light or right before and if your already up and been up deer won’t think twice about traveling right under you

I've hunted there before when I lived in Raleigh. Killed a spike buck that was running a doe. Get there super early. Most people who hunt there get there at first light. Can't tell you how many times I've had guys walk under my stand in the dark and then post up in a tree within eyesight:shaking:

Public lands are about the same most places. Do your research ahead of time on google maps, OnX and others where you can see roads and overlay topos. The further away you can get from roads the better. The vast majority of game land hunters are pretty lazy. What feels like a mile is really all of 300yds from the road. Apps or a GPS will be a huge nav help.

Oh and a boat will be helpful if you really want to get away

Yeah, but we all know boats and guns is a good way to end up with no guns.

I don't trust my climber enough for that! Plus if I fell asleep I tend to toss/turn & snore which wouldn't be a good combo in a climber...may have to do some scouting one Sunday and post up in the afternoons/evenings.

I've heard good things about hunting near the neighborhoods since supposedly the deer will bed down in people's gardens/lawns until kids get out of school. Not sure how reliable that info is since I got it from someone who hasn't been there in 8-10 years.

I've heard of OnX, but haven't downloaded it. I like boots on the ground scouting, but I may have to check it out!

I've seen youtube channels that hunt public land do that, but I don't own a kayak/canoe.

That's what happened to all my bang sticks...I only have my crossbow now!

Go to the very back where nobody else is willing to go. That's where the deer will be. I used to live within walking distance of game land. Most people would hunt within a couple hundred yards of the road. I would walk all the way to the back with a climber and see deer almost every time I hunted.

I have, it’s been a couple years ago, I scoured it out, got on a nice deer, hang a lock-on, and hunted down there

the key is to get in there now, I never killed that deer because when I showed up to hunt I was with 40 other guys that decided to give that public land a chance

went back and hunted the end of the year, hunting pressure was non existent then and I saw deer every time I went to the woods

the following year we took a boat into some of the areas people couldn’t walk to, three of us killed nice bucks the 2nd Saturday of gun season, it was a boat full of bucks

Random question for the deer hunters:

Anybody got a small buck this year that can part w/ the antlers? Using them to work w/ my lab-mix on hunting sheds (and to keep her busy so I don't have so many GD holes in my yard...she needs something to occupy that damn nose of hers).

My brother put down a 6 or 8 point (can't remember which) last year with a shot to the head after it was hit by a car. They're up for grabs and yours if you want them. They're technically 'mine' now since I was planning on making them into door handles on my C30, but they don't fit quite right. I'll be travelling 49N/73N/85N/40W this Sunday after supper if you want to meet up along the way.

FYI - I picked something similar to this for my future pup & my parent's lab absolutely loves it!

Does this mean your starting point is (or damn near) URE?
Yes to the damn near. My folks live just outside Badin, NC & I drive through the 49/109 junction on the way home.

In case anyone in the Central Deer Zone forgot, black powder opens this Saturday. I just finished lubing the smoke pole o_O...yes I laughed for 5 minutes at how :gay: that sounded.

There are many good reasons to use a boat. You can access any and all of the lands alot easier than hiking miles to get to remote/isolated places. You can also change your plans when the weather forecast wind direction is not right when you get there. It happens about 1 out of 3 for me. Once you beach the boat you can roam/stillhunt far from the boat and If you kill a deer you don't have to drag it to the boat. You just drag it to the closest shore, usually down hill unless you get far from the lake, then take the boat to the deer.I like to hunt within a few,400yrds of the shore. In the evening deer between me and the light on the water makes it easy to see the silhouete of any and all deer moving through the woods. If you hit the shore where the wind is blowing to the lake you have an advantage, the deer further than you in the woods wont smell you and you can easily see the ones passing downwind near the water if the woods are semi open.

This is the kind of info I'm looking for...you don't have a recommended spot to launch from do you?

My grandmama in SC sent me a pic of this young piebald in her neighbor's yard that keeps eating their flowers. I offered to get rid of it for her, but that went over like a lead balloon.

I don't know how I quoted YYJP? Texting on my phone i guess. There are more than a few ramps at falls.Go to ncwildlife.org and you can look at maps of all of the gamelands in the state and the location of boat ramps. Find an area you want to hunt and use the closest ramp.

My buddies little boys have been asking for me to take them fishing. We decided yesterday was nice enough to go, they both caught a half dozen fish and got tired of it. So the adults had a good time for the next couple hours.
We went to catch crappy but the perch were hitting hard and fast.
