I decided this weekend to strike off and do a hunt I've talked about doing for a while. Wanted to pack in and camp but time didn't allow for it. Started hiking at 5:30 gained 1800 ft in three miles and made it to the AT by 7am. I was greated by a wall of fog and wind blowing so hard you couldn't stand. I worked a little over a mile and found a place the fog was "less" and starting looking. Found 3 deer that ended up squirting outta the little wood line right below me. And watched where they went. Then I backed up and made a big loop around the mountain and got the wind in my face. Sat down and started looking again. Found them at 375 yards working into the woods. The hunt was on. I dropped down and cut 200 yards off fast as I was out of line of sight. Then I found a trail that was well worn and going in the direction they were going. I slowed to a crawl and inched forward making hardly any noise. The wind was still up so that helped. I crept like this for 2 hours. Checking my GPS, the trail was turning down hill and I didn't want to follow it. So I decided to bush wack back to a trail (that didn't exist I found out). Two steps in and I bust Two deer out of their beds at 20 yards. The grass was waist high so I couldn't see them. Instead of back tracking I thought I'd just go up hill and hit the ridge. 600 vertical feet and a quarter mile I made it up. Spend a could hours watching some other balds. Then headed down the mountain. Ran into the game warden and had a nice talk. 1/2 mile from the truck I walked up on a bear and was about 25 yards away when he smelt me and took off. All total I walked 9.2 miles and highest point was 5680 and I started at 3600.
Hardest/ funnest day of hunting I've had in NC ever
