NC4X4 Hunting and Fishing

Been forever since I set traps. Probably needed some bigger ones but 160’s were all the store had today. Tired of the spillway on this pond getting dammed up.

Only time I’ll ever say this…it doesn’t need to be any bigger. The state hassles me about its size every few years 😂

Any fish in it?
We currently have a very unpredictable bottom prone to flooding. The interior has become a beaver habitat. Wooded with a large stand of dead ash from beatles. I had a very large dam free of charge. A spring and a large drain basin has brought it from occasionally dry enough to walk, mostly muddy to a natural pond at its deepest point chest high. When the creek jumps we have saw trees marked 6 feet higher.

Has turned into a wood duck honey hole. It has also turned into an argument with the tenant farmer who plants the surrounding property field. This is the same field that floods. Last several brought in feet of sand. Every time he has to bring a crawler in to repair the field and try to rebuild the dike. When the land changes hands or he passes I'm not fighting the battle with mother nature. I hope the pond grows to triple and me and the son are considering pursuing a wetland conservation grant and such.

I'm the one oddball who has thoroughly enjoyed watching the 🦫 project.

Spotted bass and a mix of panfish are in it.

It’s worth checking into all of the right channels. Some states get weird with inspections on dams and engineering plans. That’s why we get hassled every few years. It was done in the 70’s by a previous landowner and nothing was ever filed, at least nothing that anyone can find. As long as I keep the spillway (beaver dam alley) clear and the backside of the dam bush hogged, they typically leave me alone.

That's weird. NC generally doesn't care unless a dam is considered high hazard (risk of loss of property or life if it fails)

Yeah this is a decades long shitshow. My father in law at one point even had to have someone come in and grid map the depths of the pond to prove it doesn’t hold as much water as some genius government official thought it did.

Brought the bow our today to get back into the swing of things. Think I'm alright. 30 yards and I thought one sounded funny.

Put together a light tackle rod for my boy this evening. He’s got a few rods but I wanted him to have a nice one. Slapped on some 6lbs test and a little top water grasshopper. Three cast and I caught a fish. If I hadn’t already told him about it I’d keep it for myself, lol. It’s the smoothest casting rod on the rack and it’s always fun catching fish on light tackle.

Finally, after 5 years, drew another Wyoming elk tag. Best part is this one was a leftover private land only cow tag so it doesn't use existing preference points, and I can still buy another preference point for the year. Still have some planning to do but the tag is valid until Jan 31 of 2026. Will be good to get out there again and see some friends, do some hunting and make cold beverages disappear.

Once again... for the sixth year in a row - not picked for Maine Moose.

Bah humbug.

My .45-70 needs to be bloodied!
Just take it squirrel hunting.

Dove plot is a little behind last year. Google photos just showed me this one from today a year ago. I think the timing will still be good for September though. Have a little less than half an acre of Quail unlimiteds upland game bird mix in the back, it looks fantastic as well. My land is all tobacco this year and the fertilizer guy didnt turn the spreader off when he made the turns so my plot got a full dose, and liked it. Everything out there is head high.

Last year today

Anybody hunt up in Nantahalla? Going to try my hand backpacking in this October.

Im in Nantahala right now. I see deer and turkey every time we come up here. Be prepared for some serious hill climbing is all I can tell you lol.
Im good with climbing. What part are you in? Im looking at Macon County area, but nothing is set.

Not bad for 40 yards after a 1.2 mile walk with 31 lb pack.

Wildlife shot some nets at the house yesterday. Banded almost thirty quackers! Saw some beaver activities and lots of four legged jerkey tracks.
