The background isn't white. It was white on the old forum, but now it's light grey. If it's burning your eyes, what do you do about the 90% of sites out there that use #fff as their background color?
The pages look more sparse now because they're missing all the big borders and tables and stuff that were in the old software. Content density is similar, if not slightly higher. There was a lot of screen area in the old software that was given over to buttons or secondary information, where those things are hidden away in AJAX windows and stuff now until you need them.
The font *was* the same exact family as it used to be, but in a larger size because people said it was harder to read than the old font. It's now the same, exact font and size as it used to be.
Conversations add a lot of functionality that didn't exist in PMs. For one thing, there's no limit now. You can have as many as you want, and the replies are all threaded together for easy reference, instead of the old way where half the stuff was in your inbox and the other half was in your sent box. You can batch delete conversations and invite other people to the conversation mid-way through. You can upload attachments to them and use smilies. It's like your own private forum.
The sidebar is core functionality, and it's basically the same in all the other software offerings now. There isn't enough data on the front page to fill the full width, and that gives us some much-needed real estate for other things. We'll be working on that stuff in the coming weeks.
Guffey, I'm not sure what picturetrail is, but there's no image attachment in your post, just a lone IMG tag. BB code tags work exactly the same in the new software as they did in the old software. You might be better off using the plain text editor instead of the rich text one. I can change the setting for you if you need help.
The old software was released in March of 2004. (!!!) It was absolutely brutal to run. The developer deemed it to be end-of-life at about this time last year, so it's been officially unsupported for about a year. Critical software updates had been sporadic (at best) since about mid-2009.
Our server loads are currently about 50-75% of what they were on the old software. Page loads are faster. And once I can get a couple of bugs sorted out, they'll get even better. I've got an 8yo laptop with 512mb of ram running WinXP and FF8 and the page loads are really, really quick. I still have a lot of optimization work to do on the back end. It was pretty heavily customized to work with the old database. I'm slowly getting rid of all of that and setting it up to better take advantage of the new database engine. Problem is, database work means taking the site offline. So I've been sticking to small, incremental changes that can be accomplished in 10-15mins.
If you're visiting the site on a phone and you're having problems, the best I can suggest is that you try using Forum Runner or Tapatalk. Mobile browsers aren't exactly standards-compliant, and each of them does different things to try and fit a fullsize website onto a tiny screen. Every single phone model is different, so it's not exactly something I could troubleshoot, either.
