A short history lesson... I rode at Callalantee Stables, when it was a horse camp, before it became Callalantee ATV. Jeeps and trucks were NOT allowed at that time. If I remember correctly, some ATV riding was allowed during the winter months. I went there with a club which went by invitation only. We didn't pay cash then, but did some trail maintenance work in return for the privilege of using the trails... definitely a good deal. Then... for whatever reason (pick one), it was decided that the horses should go, and the place would open up as an OHV area. The problem was that it was never managed properly.
The horse riders back then obviously had some respect for the area as it was green and clean. Clearly the OHV/ATV crowd did not continue that respect.
My point... back then, to me, it would have been worth the newly proposed fee. Today, with the condition of the place, I will probably still go some, but the new fees make the long drive to Harlan or Windrock look a bit less intimidating.
To all who consider the new fees to be perfectly OK, I can't help but wonder if you will be that content when your taxes double, and you can no longer afford health care.
