New Fees at Mtn City

A short history lesson... I rode at Callalantee Stables, when it was a horse camp, before it became Callalantee ATV. Jeeps and trucks were NOT allowed at that time. If I remember correctly, some ATV riding was allowed during the winter months. I went there with a club which went by invitation only. We didn't pay cash then, but did some trail maintenance work in return for the privilege of using the trails... definitely a good deal. Then... for whatever reason (pick one), it was decided that the horses should go, and the place would open up as an OHV area. The problem was that it was never managed properly.

The horse riders back then obviously had some respect for the area as it was green and clean. Clearly the OHV/ATV crowd did not continue that respect.

My point... back then, to me, it would have been worth the newly proposed fee. Today, with the condition of the place, I will probably still go some, but the new fees make the long drive to Harlan or Windrock look a bit less intimidating.

To all who consider the new fees to be perfectly OK, I can't help but wonder if you will be that content when your taxes double, and you can no longer afford health care.

No I choose whether to go wheeling taxes are not a choice.

Lets look at it like this. When I go wheeling I always cook steak one night...its kinda a tradition. Me I like a good steak. I'll gladly spend $15 on a chunk of meat that i have to cook, then eat, then shit out...that $15 gets me what 4 hours of enjoyment?

For that same $15 I could ride for 24 hours?
I am in.

Hell Ill just change from premium beer to domestic on the next trip and cover the increase.

Seriously...the fuel bill for our recent Harlan trip was a couple hundred dollars....whats $60?

If anyone is so tight that $11 - $60 is going to make them not afford rent, they should have stayed home to start with...heaven forbid they blew a tow rig tire or other such unforseen issue arise.

I see guys cut $500 tires and laugh it off.
Snap a $250 shaft and thats wheeling.
Roll a buggy and do a grands damage, at least it was fun.

But a land owner wants an extra $4...OH NOOOS WE WILL LOSE THE HOUSE.....

I don't have kids, so it doesn't affect me, but I think the issue is more for stock vehicles that drive there and back and take the herd with them. Total cost with fuel used to be $60 and now is $120. When you look at it that way the cost doubles it becomes and issue.

Simply having someone in the shed to collect the money will make a huge change in profit.

Also they may adjust the fees after awhile to get more people there. This is just what they are trying at the moment.

Going to Mtn City has become a pretty regular thing for our family not a once a year event and yes the extra $$$ we have to plan for is a big deal. I don't have unlimited funds.

Again trying to stay on topic my issue is the additional fee for the passengers (kids).

If its a once a year event $60 extra bucks is no big deal. I don't have a "built" rig like you are referring to, I gotta plain old POS that i wheel the crap out of and have a great time doing it. I use my junk to get to where you are so I can watch you break your junk. To each his own

Now that the pricing has been cleared up, I feel better about it, but I don't have any kids to take wheeling yet. $30 for the wife and myself is reasonable. $60 for a man, his wife, and two little kids in one Jeep/truck/buggy is unreasonable. That would be $120 for a weekend, plus the camping fee. I think kids under 12 should be free or $5.

As others have said, $60 or $120 on top of the fuel cost makes a day or w/e of wheeling significantly more expensive.

I have payed the $11 fee EVERY time I have gone wheeling there. Anyone skipping out on that is white trash.

well

i have been probably 20 times and 15 of those time no one was in the shack to take money ive always paid because i dont want to see the spot closed but this is a hobby and will affect how much we go due to the expense but as long as there are improvements done to the bath house and such i personally think that the increase would be worth it but why not charge a little more for the rig and no buy the person...also maybe someone should see all of this discussion from mtn city and see that they may need to reconsider fees..due to the price going up people aren't happy and will not be coming as much... just my 2 cents ...:driver:

why not charge a little more for the rig and no buy the person

Justin, and you are not the only one, have you read the other posts in this thread? Both SkyHiK5 and myself have posted the answer to your question in this thread. I would challenge you to answer it yourself.

no matter what the cost..I'd like for them to make a few more soft, level spots for tent camping. And the park/club relationships opened back up for trading work for riding.

Back in the day, we could ride as a club for free, as long as we picked up trash, and get this...made new trails!! This is how alot of the ohv trails came about.

I called to try to get clarification.

1. $15 per driver with truck - no separate fee for the truck
2. kids under 18 as passengers $11 each
3. Adult passengers $15 each
4. ATV and bikes with one person $11 each
5. kids on atv and bikes need helmets
6. Nita wants to work with us and will do what she can to possibly give discounts for people who will only be there a few hours or bringing the whole family.
7. Ronnie will not be there after today.
8. If there is a problem with the new prices or rules she will try to fix that problem, but needs some time to get a grip on the business and what all is going on there.

After labor day she may consider monthly or yearly passes. The bathroom are now clean and cleaned daily. They will be renovated this winter. She wants to clean up the place and grow the business and is willing to do whatever it takes. They will be adding a restraunt or deli of some sort also.

That is good news, but WTF is their fascination with $11, LOL. Make it an even number like $10 dammit.

I think a grill or deli in the parking lot would make some good money.

i have a family of 5 and im just putting the idea out there for people who have called and talked to them maybe to suggest when you have a family or a few friends along for the ride...seems like they would consider some thing like that ..i love to do this but if you can consider the costs for me for a weekend i can afford to go to harlen for the same money as it would costs me to go to mtn city.. not trying to be an a$$ im just trying to help me an other people in my situation...just an idea ....also im not real clear on your answer jc may be im a dummy ...lol...

I believe he is referring to the legal aspects. For passengers, making them pay a fee really drives home the signing of the waiver. They now own something and are more likely to respect that waiver. Less chance of a lawsuit.

it is more about documenting a transaction. A potential customer can just say, Oh I just signed that they said it wasnt important...their argument loses validity if a transaction takes place. Also more people = more strain on resources be they bath houses trash generated etc.

Keeping it affordable will allow me and other people that are not as well off as others go there more often, and attend other events for example an ECORS race.

I agree the prices needed to be increased, its just hard to go from $22 to wheel for the weekend to $104 just to get in.

Its an expensive hobby, I understand that.

For now I'm out of the discussion, but still monitoring, until more is learned.

Truthfully, this is probably the most sensible comment that has been made throughout this entire thread.

I remember well when the fee hike at Harlan hit this forum, and I was one of those who didn't like it much either. However, after a respectful, and sensible, explanation from one of the people who were managing that fee hike I decided it really wasn't that bad.

Hopefully, things can come together in the same manner at Callalantee, but in the shadow of past history I am not going to allow my hopes to go too high.

Sooo... until more factual information surfaces, I think maybe Rox&Mud has a good idea. Glad you posted that! :)

$15 for me
$11 per son x2
$37 for me and the boys to ride CAllantee.... not bad. Better then Winrock. By far the best closest location for me to get to.

Guys I just got off the phone with Nita....
There are several things she is working on....

1. The fees may be tweaked with time, she is trying to get a plan in place for the holiday weekend

2. The bath houses are being upgraded

3. There is a dozer there to level the parking lot and the entry trails(her idea is to make the trails get hard the further up the mountain you go, she makes sense with this one)

4. Ronnie is gone and she is listening to ideas...PLEASE dont be so neg. she is trying to support us and after my phone call she is will to do what it takes to make this one of the nicest parks on the eastcoast

5. She mentioned a flattrack? for the ATV guys that will be an open dirt area that when not used for racing will be encouraged for the kids to play, ride there big wheels etc etc...

6. She is working on the idea of repeat customer discounts.

7. CLUBS WILL BE ABLE to have work days and be rewarded with ride time...

8. I will be Emailing her with a link to NC4X4 site and this tread, I don't think she releazied the number of people on here that ride(she made a comment about website design and advertising be expensive and I metioned the power of this site for the full bodied stuff)

9. PLEASE guys help her out by being postive and not just dog her out, SHE IS TRYING to make this happen for us, she is not from a wheeling background but she has no precieved idea of what it should be like so this IMO is actually a good thing...

She will be on hear shortly(few weeks more than likely) she said its been long days with a doozer guy, a foersty guy and a few others cleaning the cabins and the offices and working out game plans. This will not be an overnight change but you should see small changes quick(the bathhose is high on her list, she said it was horrible and will be cleaned bc she will be using them too).

Please welcome her to our site when she does come.

I would welcome these changes. The reason I stay at the lodge is the bath house. :)

Exactly:popcorn: same here

I am curious to why a passenger in a Full Sized Rig is $15 vs an ATV and Rider at $11?
How is it more for someone to ride along? Just curious, I know she has the right to charge what ever but that just struck me as odd.
x2 i have no problem paying $15ea. for my wife and i but atv riders should be the same also all atv riders should require helmets!
