Not trying to cause a revolution or w/e just trying to voice an opinion to make a possible change to an exsisting rule, Rob and the Mods do a great job here not talking trash about them at all. Just a recent thread sparked what I've been thinking for a while now.

I disagree with the whole under 21 thing, it forces underage users to register as not there age and then almost always causes problems later on for no other reason than a rule that IMO shouldn't be the way it is. Denying people access to the forum that are in college is ridiculous IMO, I like the rule but think it should be moved from 21 to 18.

Rather than automatically forcing all the high school/early college students into doing something wrong by lying about there age for access to the forum from the get go, we can let them in, maybe put up with a little more BS but make an overall positive improvement in the long run by getting young wheelers moving in the right direction for our sport earlier rather than kicking them out when we could have made a difference.

I can tell you right now that w/o this forum I would have been doing illegal 4wheeling for a lot longer than I did as a youth, yea I'm hard headed and still a kid, but this site is what got me to where I am today with the world of 4 wheeling, I don't think we should be denying other up and coming kids that we have a chance to make a difference with access to the forum.

Once again not trying to talk trash about mods or anything like that, just making a constructive criticism to a rule, take it or leave it.

Thanks

The underage rule isn't denying access to anyone, it merely adds a step to the process to be able to post. We all had to go through some p[rocess to be able to post here, register, post in chit chat. How hard is it to register, post in chit chat, and be sponsored???? I am "of age" now, but i had to get a sponsor before I was, it wasn't that hard to do.

I disagree, most people don't know anyone here, and you can't learn anything from the chit chat section hardly. The sponsorship thing is alright I guess but it puts off a ton of people that would have otherwise signed up and participated. Besides how many I'm new here will you sponsor me threads have you seen that none replys to or that people talk trash to the person . . . .

Not saying get rid of it just bump it down to 18

Yea, but I hate most of you college kids.
All liking mud and the like.
Us old crotchety guys that are to lazy to clean our trucks need to feel good. :D

That being said, I think the BIGGER reason for "needing a sponsor" is to try and prevent things like that post from happening. We do NOT need people from here driving through people's front yards tearing up land. THAT is a youthful or just stupid thing to do.
Then to take pictures of it, is, well, stupid.
That being said, I have driven on quasi legal power line trails, (knew the land owner, had "verbal" permission, but nothing in writing) I have also driven on illegal lines when I was younger, and more recently to pull out younger people that drove down said power lines. (and try to convince them to stop doing that)

This is a private site. Therefore they can put any rule they want.
That being said, I agree with the rule, I have also sponsored one kid on here. I'd sponsor another one, but I'm lazy. :D

The rule was made for good reason. Way too many issues came up with the younger crowd not being able to control what they wrote, and so forth. The problems all but disappeared when the rule was made. Not saying all were problem kids, but a large majority were. I Say keep it as it is.

I think 21 is fine. There are some 18 year olds that are more mature than 25 year olds, but as you stated Ricky,
most people don't know anyone here
so we can't go making exceptions for and rules for each "underage" that walks in the door.

When you go to a Bar (which I KNOW you wouldn't DARE to do being under 21) do they interview you and see if you're mature enough to come in and have a drink?

nope.... do I think that YOU could handle yourself and present yourself as mature on here with out Sponsorship? Sure, I think YOU can. and maybe a few others, but not EVERY "underage" that walks in here. And I 'm willing to bet that when you get older, and look back, you'll see the same way. ;)

I support the rule. I was well above age when I joined, so I didn't have to deal with the annoyance of being sponsored.
But, yep, when I was young, I did some stupid chit too. And, yep, my habots are better for being an a member here.
Some things to keep in mind.
You can join at any age. Anybody can, no sponsor needed to join.
You only need a sponsor if you wish to POST in other sub-forums.... YOU ARE ABLE TO READ ANYTHING IN ANY OTHER SECTION WITH OR WITHOUT MEMBERSHIP.
Therefore you do NOT have to be 21 or sponsored to "learn". only to be able to post - in certain forums.
"underage" users get an avatar label as such. I personally like that. Why? Well, I tend to be a lot more patient and fogiving w/ teh younger crowd. And if you're over 21 and do something stupid - it's gloves off, you get what you desrve.

yes, new young folks can't just magically "find" a sponsor. Know what? That's the POINT. We get to know you a bit first, THEN you get the nod. Easy enough.

Only good complaint about being an unsponsored unerage member is not being able to post tech questions. But here's a workaround...
if you really need an answer to a question, post it in the Chit Chat section. State plainly you cannot post elsewhere but know it will get moved. Then clearly ask your question. It will get replies, and likely be moved to the tech section anyway. Guess what, you can still read the replies. You get your answer, AND a chance for folks to see that you know how to ask intelligent questions.

it forces underage users to register as not there age and then almost always causes problems later on for no other reason than a rule that IMO shouldn't be the way it is.
Here is where your argument hits a brick wall. No one forces anyone to lie.

99% of the time if someone registers under a incorrect birth date we will catch them..

Trust me, we have caught a lot..

and if someone does not want to follow the rules about the forum and they lie to get around the rules, then 99% of the time they will not be willing to learn and correct there actions when told what the did, or plan to do is illegal or wrong.

Ricky.. there is a lot of mod/admin stuff that goes on everyday to keep this site running as smooth as possible, from underage kids, to spammer, to illegal info posted, etc..

and to change a rule so a few kids can make posts easier.. sorry that is not worth it to me.. I say keep the rules.

Ricky,
You have been one of the inspirations for this rule. Also, you are an example used in arguements as this rule is reviewed (which happens). You were sponsored by someone who does not live near you, and I doubt you've much if any face time with him. You didn't even bother to look for someone near you. You followed the letter but not the intent of the rule.

The thing is, by choosing to lie, these kids are earning a reputation. Also, because they're lazy they don't know how to do some research and ASK someone near them or ask their folks if THEY know someone in the sport. Or show up at a club meeting? Or show up at a swap meet? There's nothing stopping them but air and opportunity.

hscrugby hit the nail on the head. The very thread that i am sure prompted you to post this, is the perfect example of why that kid should have followed the rules. The rule was put in place to stop dumbass threads like that from happening. If the kid hadn't lied about his age, he wouldn't have been able to put that stupid post up there, and even start this topic of debate. No, it wouldnt have stopped the idiot from trying to fourwheel in a church parking lot, but it might have saved him some public embarrassment, and more importantly, saved us(the legit fourwheeling community), such a public display of dumbassery and what basically amounts to vandalism.

IMHO I think all new members should go thru a 6 month sponsorship and if they don't tow the line or start acting like a troll they should be perma-banned! and there sponsor should be punished in some way. like being banned for a month or a week or something like that. that way you as a sponsor would make sure of the character of the person that you are sponsoring.(if you care about the NC4X4 community) I know this would greatly reduce the number of people that join, but it would definatly reduce the number of undesirables let in here... like me!

my son which is offroad1500 got banned earlier today because he was 18 and I am POed it is so ridiculous the site banned him because he is 18, he has been on here since 2006, I just join today so I could try to help him out, hes a good kid and he hangs out with and wheels with a lot of you

Umm...Let's see

1 - He joined the NC4x4 Forum and lied about his age.
2 - Posted pictures of himself stuck in a mud puddle along the side of the road.
3 - Lied about a deer running out in front of him causing him to swerve and run into the mud puddle.
4 - Posted more pictures of the truck stuck that clearly show he was tearing up the property of a church.
5 - Then he tells us how he laughed at the mud he left in the church's parking lot.

I'd say he banned himself with his own words and actions. I hope you are POed at him. I don't see any reason to be POed at anyone here. Could it be like that old saying - "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree?"

1- he did join the site and lied about his age but that was 2 years ago and one of his friends did it for him
2- he did post pics of him stuck because it was funny what happened
3- he lied about the deer because he was emberised of the truth
4- the property he was on wasent the church, it was in his buddys yard which was beside the church
5- and we know the people that own the church, and we power washed the parking lot the next day

I'm mad that he didnt tell me the truth about how he got in the situation but thats it, and he took responsibility and fessed up about what happened and he cleaned up what he messed up

NC4X4 site=NC4X4 Rules

That being said i prefer the PBB style of enforcement rather than banning. More entertaining.

Problems with your thinking here...

You know I was Rick's sponsor. I got tons of PMs every time he did something stupit. I think you even sent me an email wanting me to reprimand him for doing something stupid. The rules of sponsorship are designed to have an 'adult' talk to the underage user when they do something 'wrong' on the board, not to have the adult reprimand them for towing their POS jeeplike thing with a 1500 and honestly believing that it's O.K. to do that. There was a thread early on in chit chat started by some kid that wasn't willing to ask someone to be their sponsor, kid was all buthurt that he had to do it. I, along with a bunch of other people jumped his sh!t for his arrogant, whining ways. I stated clearly that if I were to receive a PM from an underage user that clearly asked me to sponsor them, and gave me good reason to stick my neck out for them, I would likely do the deed. Ricky sent me a very sincere PM. Stated what he thought he could bring to the forum. Promised not to break any of the forum rules, and did a fine job of introducing himself to me. I told him that I would sponsor him, but we had to meet face to face at some point. If I met him and didn't like him or he was an ass on the board, I'd drop my sponsorship. Within about a month we met at a CNC4x4 function. Thought he needed a shower and a change of clothes, but felt that he was as 'adult' as most anyone on the board. I don't regret any of my time as his sponsor. His level of doing stupid stuff to his vehicles is well documented. But in all the trash talking to him or about him. He has always been an adult. I've never seen him get into any of the name calling, or sunk to the level of those people making the comments directed at him. I see Ricky as the poster child of being a good underage, sponsored board user.

I fully agree with the sponsorship rules, I think the system (in my experience) works.

Rules are Rules...

1. Since it was (2) years ago I guess it's ok then...

So, none of them are over 21 and could sponsor him?

2. Actually it's not that funny in reality is pretty pathetic... I mean it ranks right up there w/ flexing out on a curb, etc.

3. He lied because he got called out...

4. More excuses..

5. People own curches?

Are we sure it's not the same person here... I mean who honestly gets so butt hurt that they have a parent get online and try to defend them?

It's "special"... :shaking:

I am an underage user and I agree with the rule (tho sometimes I wish I was able to read the garage threads to follow things from chitchat).
Thats all I wanted to type

1. Your not his father. I call bs. You are the same kid.
2. If you are the father then you both need to grow up imho. Who posts about their kid getting banned off a website? NO ONE imho.
3. Smart way to get around an ip check though! (but you didn't think of it that way so you can't have the credit)

1- he did join the site and lied about his age but that was 2 years ago and one of his friends did it for him

STOP!
2- he did post pics of him stuck because it was funny what happened
No parent would think it was funny to do that to a church.

3- he lied about the deer because he was emberised of the truth
English not a requirement in high school out there?

Guys this is obviously bs. Someone double can this kid and his bs
