Packing heat on campus

I read that today. I think that is a bad idea. I know when i went to college i would have a buzz from the night before in class. Some people are hotheads, and some of those people have guns. I dont want someone brandishing a pistol everytime there is an arguement or they want to get their point across through intimidation. Isnt that what campus police is for as well as the local law? I mean their response time may take a min or two longer but like the cop said in the end of the interview, he is going to shoot anyone with a gun not in a uniform, so how will he be able to distinguish who is the shooter and the victim through gun play. I hope they dont go through with this. IMO.

agreed, but you have to think, you have to be 21 to have a CCW, so that knocks out a huge percentage of students. Also, taking the class and going through the hassle to get it plus the background checks, etc almost totally ensure that the "hotheads" etc won't be the ones carrying

Good point flipper. I think it could be a good deterrant but also a threat as well. This is more of a win/lose situation. Anyone read the article on the kid at VT that killed himself because he was asian and he beleived that everyone thought he was like the Chim Chon Chow (i forget the real name) guy who massacred all those students? The ironic thing- he bought his gun from the same pawn shop the crazy asian got his from.... why has that place not been shut down yet?

why would a business shut down because people misuse the items they purchased legally and had at the time every right to own ? its not a gun shops place to decide if a person is responsible or is going to misuse the gun. maybe we should shut down the gas stations that sell gas to the the getaway car in robberies, or hell shut down the car lot that sold the robber his car

I don't have time to tear these responses apart at the moment.
Anyone else care to...

DO IT!!

im actually writing a paper on the very subject right now and i could use some ideas.

personally, i am in favor of allowing CCW on college campuses, but im only 18 so what do i know.

Not disagreeing whatsoever with this but a gun shop is not entitled to sell a gun to anybody just because they have a permit (or not depending on state laws) to buy one. They have the right to not sell to whomever at their discretion but unless they are truly psychic they have no way to know what the buyer's intentions really are.

Horrible idea. To much irresponsibility and ignorance. Im sure there are responsible kids/adults out there that would only use their gun in a must situation, but then there would be all of those "young gun" "badasses" who would carry them only for intimidation purposes. Also in response to the first line of the article, if you have a gun in an unexperienced shooters hand and they go popping off some rounds in defense of themselves and end up shooting others in the class room by accident and killing them, well it just kinda nullifies the whole idea.

What's the difference between a 21 y/o college kid carrying and a 21 y/o h.s. grad carrying? Not much IMO. If you don't agree with carrying on campus, you're saying that 21 is too young for CCW, period.

I agree, I think that if youve done everything necessary to obtain the permit than you should be able to carry into anywhere, except courts, bars and banks. Oh and esp post offices.

I know that i am responsible enough to carry, and i have EVERY right to protect myself and my close ones against harm...whether i am at school, or where ever. I carry in my truck where ever i go.... they can throw me in jail, write me tickets all they want, but my protection is worth that. Both my parents have ccw's.... i will have one in about 4 weeks...

and campus police are a joke

Not all those that want to carry on campus are 18-21. I am 45 this year, and can't legally pick my wife up for lunch, as I carry 24/7. Even pulling into the drop-and-go lane at the comm. college where she works is not legal. That ain't right.

These staments can be made about anyone who can carry a gun pretty much anywhere, anytime. So are you saying that we should ban CCW everywhere?

Carrying while under the influence is illegal. Brandishing your gun "every time there is an argument" is illegal. Using your gun to "get your point across" is illegal. If you're worried about college students breaking the law with their firearms, why don't you make a law against them shooting 49 people on campus? Problem solved. Virginia Tech would've never happened, right?

You want to rely on the cops to defend you? The cops who take a few minutes to show up if someone even gets the chance to call them? The cops that are hoping the bad guy will still be holding his gun so they know who to shoot? You've just acknowledged that cops shoot the wrong guy more often than private citizens, because cops are the hotheaded ones coming into the situation blind.

That piece of shit police chief idiot can go to hell. He doesn't want responsible, law-abiding people to protect themselves because one of his dumbass officers might shoot the wrong person and there'll be a lawsuit. That's who you're hoping to protect you.

...he is going to shoot anyone with a gun not in a uniform, so how will he be able to distinguish who is the shooter and the victim...

Trying my best not to get started in this...

Gotta be just as quick with holstering (pocketing) the weapon as with the draw...so you look like a 'victim'...and hopefully not get shot at by the cops...

...so that should give you a good five minutes after the incident to appear unarmed......

...that or always have a box of donuts to distract them long enough to explain your actions...

...ok now im just trying to start more stuff...:flipoff2:

...I need to pay my nc4x4 dues so i can get into the garage and follow this thread tomorrow...

didn't we just do this a month ago???

Bottom line is, I carry to protect me and my family. You need help? Call the cops...and wait...

I don't agree with not being able to carry in a bank, too, but that's another discussion. It just boils down to the ones who obey the law aren't the ones who are gonna rob the place... so what's the big deal.

It's proven that since ccw permits, crime has dropped. I'd like to see every person over 18 carrying. Then people would think twice before they went in a building to shoot people.

The bottom line is only the people that follow the law will not carry where they can't. The people doing the shootings don't care what the law is, they carry a gun anyways. The people that have went through the class and paper work to carry legally are not the people to worry about. I think if you have taken the class and done the legal stuff to carry, you SHOULD be able to carry. Just my opinion.

Does getting a Permit to carry give you training in a hostage situation? Does it give you training on how to fire on the run? Does it give you training on how to keep your weapon from being taken away?
I don't think students should be allowed to carry. I also agree campus police are pretty much a joke with the Barney syndrome. The solution would be to profile certain individuals to carry. Teachers, admins and such. Heck probably even some janitors. Adults trained, not just permit holders.

The military will sure as hell give an 18 year old one and tell him to have at it, what's the difference if the 21 year old student has training? None

agree 100%

to me it's not an age issue, it's a mentality issue. Eg. I'd feel much better have a 19 y/o Military Trained KID carrying a CW on a campus than your AVERAGE 21 y/o college student. I just saw too many dumbasses in College that would've carried, did carry and shouldn't have been able to leave home without a helmet.
