Project Cherokee Chief

carl,
That outta be a nice conversion there. do you need any help with the clip? I guess you got the tranny out.

yes I do need some help and you can pic up the trans too :)

i am not sure exactly when I will be working on it I know this week end sometime but when ever you have time let me know

Hey Carl, I think I could spend the day giving you a hand if ya need more than one.

shoot me a PM if ya need more, I'll bring the rug rat so they can wear each other out.

YOU are the MAN! i love those old cherokees. keep up the good work!

I'll give you a call

guys Pm me with you phone numbers. For some reason Eric the one I have for you does not work.

The main thing is to get the engine in the right place so everthing fits

Here are som pictures from today. 'Etjeep "Eric" Came over and gave me a hand setting the front clip on. I needed to make sure everything fit and that the fan did not hit the Radiator.
I am using the stock trans mount in the Stock posistion. Worked out great there is plenty of room for the Fan.

The only problem is that with the height of the air cleaner it will now be sticking above the hood. I am going to need to look at some of the newer grand Cherokees and dodge dakotas that have the 5.9 and see what they are using for a air intake and air cleaner. I thin this may solve my problem. if not I will have to make some sort of rasied section in the hood.

I am Glad that I did not have to move the trans cross member because I will not have to modify my e-brake cable.

Looks great keep up the work and the pictures.

If you would like some help I am at FT Bragg and I can drive up to help. Just drop me a PM if you want the help.

I seem to remember some of the full sized dodge trucks using a cone shaped filter and ran a tube up to the intake. Not sure of the year or anything though.

Find a dodge dakota or jeep grand cherokee air hat, such as this, you can put a cone filter on the end and not worry about the airbox, another option is the 14" round filter. Pretty much any 14" round parts store filter setup with work, you just need to make and s shaped bolt for it

Thanks for the pics I thought that should work. I might even be able to make a snorkel with that setup.

Yep that's the one I was thinking of.

I did A little more work I got the engine mounts made and tack welded in place. The engine is now sitting on the mounts. I decided to use the stock factory mount from the dodge frame and adapt them to the Cherokee frame. The Cherokee frame is a little under 4 inches wider the the Dodge frame, so I used some 2x2 inch tubing to compensate. I stll need to finish welding ,clean them up and paint the bare metal.

Here are some more pictures.

Carl,
I forgot to say its lookin good. Make sure to check you have good penetration on those welds when you finish it up.

Another thing I checked my spacing and there is 5" from the front of the fan pulley to the back of the rad. The fan assy is 3". That gives 2" at the center, maybe slightly less at the bottom. I could not check it, I have my fan off. Just for point of reference.

I will be finishing the welding this weekend the wife had some minor surgery so I am off work and taking care of
shawn untill she is feeling better.

I did some Fabing today on the rear Spring hangers. I got the front Hangers done for both of the rear springs. I am using Stock Grand Wagoneer Springs and with the new hangers it will give me 8 inches of lift. that is about 2 more that the front, but with gear they should level out or be close to the same height.

The rear shackle will be fliped. I hope to get those done this week and Get the 14 bolt mounted this weekend.
