Project Saving Silverman

💯

It’s fine. I fully expected it. And you guys are cool enough that I’m willing to put up with it…for now. I’m legitimately shocked (and maybe even disappointed) that nobody has said “LS swap it” yet. Bring it MFers!

No more build updates until the entirety of page 5 of this build thread is filled with motor swap recommendations/pics/memes/tiktoks/whatever.

Hell, I’ll even kick it off.

Since we're bringing credit cards into this don't LS swap it, Be different and do a blueprint 632 BB, or 4.0L Barra:massey:

You right. The move is probably swap the drivetrain from the buggy into the 4runner and get silly with a new buggy drivetrain. Serious question: if I throw away my receipts, can the cc companies proooooove that I bought things with their money???

I was watching part of a podcast the other day with Matthew Cox of him apparently convincing the social security office to give him SSN for children that didn't exist. do that and leave the debt with non-existent kid lol

If you’re interested, I still have some of those fancy double drilled flanges and random driveshaft parts that nobody wanted to buy from me when I started my buggy build. For you, I’m down to barter some Diet Sundrop for the whole lot. If it helps you make bad decisions sooner rather than later…

Got yourself a deal brother!

I saw you asking about fj80 steering in the other thread. I would also add the fj60/62 axle to your front swap candidates. It's about as wide as an fj80 rear when you slap IFS hubs on it, has the big 9.5" diff, uses mini truck outers, birfs and steering and is already setup for leafs so you don't have to mess with the fj80s square axle tube. Added bonus you don't have to pay the fj80 tax on them and you can usually find them pretty cheap. An fj60 front and 80 rear is the axle combo in my truck and I like it about as much as I can for it not being tons. I was going the fj80 front route and someone talked me out of it and I'm glad they did.

Definitely appreciate the input! I already "have" the FJ80 axles...just have to go dig them out of the field they've been sitting in. That's what I'm planning to stick with...unless, when I drag it out, it's just absolutely toasted.

Not a glamorous update, but progress nonetheless. After 3 solid afternoons of wrenching in a greasy mess, the transmission is out. Had to take half the motor apart to get to a lot of the connectors, the starter and the bellhousing bolts. Worn out motor mounts made for some precarious movement of stuff while trying to break the transmission free from the motor. Also had to do some sketchy lifting of the truck to be able to slide the transmission out from under the truck. But it’s out.

I think my next move is to test fit the 5 speed and dual cases so I can see what I need to cut out of the tunnel for the shifters. After I get the tunnel cut, I’ll drop the new trans and cases, then install the new carpet that showed up this weekend, and reinstall the seats.

Had a productive weekend. Got to spend a full Saturday wrenching with @DieselToyPullr Loaded up a truck bed full of parts from Tim's garage that will go a long way towards getting this thing put together. Now they're clogging up my garage instead of his 🤣 Still gotta go dig the axles and spare hard top out of the field they're sitting in. But I'll get to it eventually.

Pulled the tail housing off the transmission and swapped out the factory 21/21 spline sleeve for a new 21/23 spline sleeve from AA. Realized that the input shaft on the front t-case is actually a 21 spline, not a 23 spline like I originally believed. No biggie. I have a spare Marlin Competition 23 spline input laying around somewhere that I'll swap in at some point. Got the transmission and dual cases test fitted, tunnel marked for shifters, and removed for an eventual full reseal. I was a little worried the TG cross member I picked up wasn't going to line up with the factory cross member frame mounts. The guy I got it from wasn't sure if it came from a pickup or 4runner, and wasn't sure what year it was for either. But it happens to line up perfectly and bolts right up! And it was $free.99! I forgot how long these setups are...but it's exactly what I wanted for this build. Looks like I'll be completely losing a center console. But that's okay...I'll still have a glove box.

Decided to go ahead and pull the motor since I had already removed almost everything that needed to come off in order to pull the motor. It was a tiring but rewarding day.

Next step is to drop the gas tank, then pull the truck back out of the shop and get after it with degreaser and the pressure washer. Need to clean up the engine bay, frame, IFS stuff and the entire underside of the truck now that almost everything is out. Once it's completely cleaned up, I'll cut the tunnel and get the carpet and seats installed. Then I can start removing the IFS parts and cutting stuff out for the solid axle swap (way easier to do with the motor out). In the meantime, I'll be able to more fully assess the existing wiring harness and make decisions about the motor. Some parts of the engine wiring harness appear to be a little iffy. Some of the connectors are brittle and/or cracked. And it looks like critters may have gotten to some of the wires. If the harness is largely salvageable with some isolated wires to splice and connectors to replace, I'll stick to the plan of getting a fresh 22RE long block and rock on. If it looks like I need to get a whole new engine harness, I may reconsider my replacement motor selection. More to come later.
