Definitely not poplar. It's a hearty hardwood. Also not red oak. I'm guessing in the oak family, but not a common one that I've seen around here. The bark is very pronounced. It's hard to gauge the scale, but the small end of that log is about 26", and the big end is 30-32".Red Oak

It's definitely not either of those.My first guess is red or white oak.

No. Friend's grandparents had it taken down, and trunk was all that was left.Looking at the butt end,it reminds me of a hickory. But tha bark not so much

Definitely not sweet gum. And sweet gum is a pain.Looks like sweet gum. It'll laugh at a splitting maul.
