2.5 years ago, i posted this in the thread about my Utah trip:

The week prior to departure, we had to empty out FIL's apartment. Renee dug up one rose bush out of his garden. Had 1 or two buds/blooms on it. Literally the last 5 minutes before leaving, I dug a hole and slapped it in. No rose food, no miracle grow, no water, nothing. This is what we came home to:

Found the correct lady at the DMV who knew the ropes. I may have avoided getting new tags for about 3 years and finally got caught. But now the state can kiss my legal ass. Free non weighted DV tags on the cummins. And, yes, I can add full weighted value to them if I want I just have to pay for the weight. 15k is like $275 with this plate.

Between the growing baby birds, the frequent feeding trips of mom and dad birds and the impressive volume of bird poop accumulation the suction cup supporting the wreath has begun to slip.

The photo shows just how far it has slid.
Supporting the wreath and not letting it fall - while not overly disturbing the nest and spooking mama bird away for good has proved a challenge.
I installed the fish hook supports on Wednesday but couldnt get the really tight without disturbing the wreath greatly or risking the nest tumbling off its perch.
A few days later the 10lb mono is tight as a banjo string.

Its a treacherous race against time. Google-fu says 10-14 days after hatch they should be able to fly. We are at day 7/8. Will they make it?

Update for those following along.

Two babies took flight yesterday. This morning two remained in the nest when I left for work at 0530.

My wife is currently watching the momma bird and the 3 hatchlings flying back to the nest repeatedly and trying to shoo the last baby from the nest.
She says momma is flying/hovering over the nest and signing - not sounding distressed but cheery...like she's encouraging the bird. Said the mom will fly out to the road, turn back hover over the nest and sing a bit.


I dont know why I am so invested in these little things, I dont even like birds...but nature is cool.

Nature has a way of doing things that dont quite seem possible... Comparing chicks hatched under a hen vs ones from a hatchery, they arent even close. Within a few days the hen will have them out roaming and exploring nature, where the hatchery birds are fragile and have to be coaxed to their food and kept at specific temperatures.
 
They said it couldn't be done, but I brought home 40 boards and 8 sheets of 12ft long roofing tin in my shortbed truck the other day. I'm not sure if this guy was trying to touch the flags with his hood, or was just an oblivious idiot, but he was stupid close. The pic doesn't do it justice.

Guys at Lowes did a great job of selecting the best boards, putting it on my cart, loading it in my truck, and strapping it down.

I love watching bluebirds hatch out of my boxes every year. Interesting note with one particular box in my yard. I had a crop of bluebirds in it one year and my kids stupid cat jumped up over my anti-climbing devices (truss plates nailed outward) and was swatting at the parents and destroyed the eggs sticking her paws inside. Ever since then the birds have shunned that box. That cat is gone and I put a metal shield on the post to keep them from jumping over the plates. The birds visit the box and check it out every year, but refuse to build in it. This is the third year in a row with no nest.

The box turtle comes around and loves to eat cantaloupe.

The possum is useful at eating things we don’t like. But sometimes he wanders thru the fence into the backyard and I have to shoo him away so the dog doesn’t play too rough with it.
 
The last bird has flown.
Apparently our dog squeaking a toy (as heard in the vid) was the push it needed

Well nevermind the video is too large to upload.
