Random Thoughts.....

Why has my 14 year old Stihl backpack leaf blower, and both of my 15+ year old Stihl chainsaws never fouled a spark plug while every 2-stroke dirt bike I ever owned would foul a plug after 2-4 rides?

The jetting in your bike sucked and/or you were running an oil that had a stupid high flash point and wasn't burning completely.

Same problem in 9 different bikes over 15 years with multiple different oils.

Jetting sucked. Not being a dick, but thats what it was. I went through that with my CR because I didn't understand how to jet bikes yet. Learned on my KTM because it would foul plugs on command when I first got it. Now I change plugs in the YZ when its been long enough I cant remember when I did it last...like why I need to go do it now that I have said that. Pretty sure its the same plug that I put in when I did the jug and top end this time last year (26 hours)

I never changed the Jets in any of my bikes except for my 99 CR 250. That one was always hard to start and didn't idle well. All my other bikes ran fine with the stock jetting, or at least they ran well enough to fool me. I always ran 32:1. What ratio do you run?

What do you think about klotz super techniplate or r50? My saws love the STP, but stuff with power valves & other complex moving parts should run r50... STP is 20% castor, which is awesome lubricant (runs to heat, not away & prevent seizure on lean mixes, I've proved it.. and saws rev to 15k rpm, so it's not that dissimilar from a bike)

I've run Klotz STP and R50 but not the Spectro. My non scientific breakdown is this: Small rotating assemblies and pistons typically run WFO longer, generating more heat. For those applications in small bore bikes and power equipment, I do believe castor still has its place and works great. I ran STP for years in my 125's because that was the thing to run. 93 octane and Klotz STP at 32:1. I do think with that, the jetting needs to be spot on to prevent fouling and exhaust spooge. Castor based oils are typically thicker and have a higher flash point so the heat is needed to efficiently burn it.

If you read the back of an Amsoil Dominator bottle, it specifically formulated to run at 50:1 (2.6oz/gal) I run it in my Echo backpack blower and saw as well as my bike because I always have a jug laying around. A lot of new power equipment is built for 50:1 as well. There are a handful of us running YZ250/250x's and all run 50-75hrs on a piston with Dominator at 50:1 and each time the piston could have gone considerably longer. My 2012 had an unknown amount of hours on it and needed to be replated last time I had the jug off for a top end, but that will happen eventually on any nikasil cylinder as the plating wears. I don't attribute that to any oil specific issue as I've replated stuff running on Klotz and others.

All of my Stihl stuff (blower, saws, weedeater) recommend 50:1, which kind of blew me away coming from the dirt bike world where it seemed like everyone ran 32:1.

I love toyotas, but I FUCKING HATE working on toyota axles! Everything you touch is filled with this sticky, nasty, black moly grease! It gets on everything and because of that, it gets all over me! Sometimes I think about cleaning the knuckle balls all up and buying RCV dana 44 boots and putting them on just to contain everything.

IFS Toyotas FTW... lol

Not really a Jeep guy, but wondering if you can put a ‘what vehicle do you drive’ question on an application. Not sure if that could be construed as profiling. But was pleasantly surprised an applicant rolled up in this...

What a person drives says volumes as to who they are. Just as much as what a person wears. So, i guess it is profiling in a way.
If you drive a highly modified custom vehicle that you spent years building piece by piece, tube after tube, with any drivetrain option that it never came with and you're applying for a job at an off-road shop, race shop or fabrication company, you're way more likely to atleast catch someone's eye.

"I wont just tell you I know what I'm doing, I'll show you".

5 years ago when I met Mr Stuyck, this is what I drove up to his shop in. His first words to me were, "You have an eye for things.....I've noticed".

And now I work for him.

Proof. ;)

nah, you just want to make sure they have a reliable form of transportation..

On second thought, Jeep may not qualify. (Yes I own a couple presently and have owned many, and not really true but it was too good of an opportunity to miss to poke fun)

Ha...I can’t laugh too hard...I have 3 Fords I bought a building for storage when the wife got sick of seeing them in the side yard not moving.

mines still in my parking spot.. she's said something about it being there but nothing's happened. (She gets the car port, which I made available for her and I park behind the project, in an almost 2 car wide driveway, so I guess I'm lucky)

Eh. Ive got two jeeps and a dodge that barely move. One jeep and the dodge have motors half way out of them. None have been truly road worthy in at least a year. Wife grumbles every now and again about my junk yard, but really doesnt care.

Driving to OH Friday I saw many of the mobile speed "checkers" on the side telling me i was going to fast. I want to know if they can do triple digits,......never got the opportunity to test though..:(

Just an FYI...when i was doing a lot of traveling to Ohio 3-4 years ago those mobile speed checkers also had cameras rigged to issue speeding tickets. There was some controversy regarding legality...so not sure if it’s still a thing.

I saw the same thing earlier this year in MD on 81. They posted a sign stating something about cameras and violators will be issued tickets.
